Basic information about my car:

2014, Peugeot, 208, VTi, RM 90000

Reasons why I bought this car:

While waiting for the plane at the Airport, there was a Peugeot carnival in the airport area and browsed all models the price tags and found only this model was priced below RM 100,000. At that time, I was already driving a 5 -year -old Perodua MYVI. I headed straight to the showroom and test drive this model upon returning from a trip. The driving experience is exhilarating with stability when cornering and a robust brake control system. This would be the best continental car for a price below RM 100,000.

Car selection process
- I had a budget of: RM 100,0000

- Models that I have considered include:VW Polo, Honda City & Toyota Vios

Reasons why I chose this car:

1) The ergonomic Driving panel.

2) Stability while speeding and cornering.

3) Excellent and comfortable braking system.

4) Super comfortable driver and front passenger seat.

5) A touch of rally genetics car.

User experience：
- I have already done: 256820km
- My average fuel consumption is 10.5l/100km

The first four years was a nightmare ( under warranty period) due to incompetence of service centre, failure to diagnose problem and wrong parts replacement.

Every 10,000 KM schedule maintenance will cost you the bomb with SC at an average of RM 1000 to RM 1500 ( Minor Service) for major service RM 1700 - RM 1900. For the new owner, you are fortunate because the previous dealer disposed of their business.

Mileage 50,000 KM - Warm Aircond blowing sent it to SC for diagnosis, the result is compressor malfunction, it is covered by warranty, but it takes two months for replacement. While waiting, I sent it to an Outside workshop, and the problem was solved ( leaking aircon piping only). Two months passed and nobody called for follow up.

Mileage 90,000 KM (The year 2016) - Engine jerking with notification of ( Engine Failure, Have a Vehicle Stop), again to SC. The result is engine coil condemn, not covered under warranty ( normal wear and tear) it cost me RM 1800.

Mileage 100,000 - Mileage 150,000 ( 2018) KM - Air Conditioning system problem again, lucky thing there is an announcement for aircond recall. Gearbox shifting to gear two jerkings when the engine is hot; I sent it to SC cannot diagnose only made an official declaration ( Intermittent issue) ( biasala lah bang kereta Conti mileage Tinggi memang Macam nie), I suffered from this gear issue until 2020 when warranty ends.

At the same time, there is white smoke from the exhaust; I am so tired already facing an issue with this car- SC confirmed there is a need for engine replacement and all covered by them, waiting period is one year. While waiting, I sent the car to the Peugeot specialist workshop for diagnosis. It is only required a top overhaul, not engine replacement- but I decided to wait and keep top up engine oil until the new engine arrived.

Mileage 170,000 KM - Again, aircond issues arise; cooling coil needs replacement ( RM 1500) ( outside workshop) and starts servicing with Peugeot specialist workshop at USJ 1. Then I realised the schedule for every 10,000 KM only cost me Rm 400 - Rm 500 and major servicing only RM 700-RM 800

Mileage 200,000 KM - After a series of SC episodes, now the car is under the care of the workshop. There is no issue; the aircon works perfectly. The previous issue is only a sensor problem, not a cooling coil or compressor; the gearbox issue is solved only need solenoid replacement for RM 500. Sparepart from the workshop is not as expensive as SC charges you, and pricing is affordable and can be used for a longer time.

In conclusion, Peugeot 208 was a great model for city and long-distance drive provided that it is under the care of competent mechanics. Starting in 2020, I enjoy driving this car because I just realised to maintain it only 10% higher than others Japs Car. As the tag line says, “ Let your body drive”. Reminder for a new owner, car emergency fund is compulsory to own this brand and be sure you are perfect friend with the Pug Mechanics outside and always get a second opinion when SC quotes you.

Pros of my car:

- Confident driving experience.

- Comfortable for long journey.

- Spare part is affordable and easy to find ( outside workshop).

- Car Technology is advanced.

- Never breakdown on the roadside

- Suspension system last for 8 years.

- Not a common car

Cons of my car:

- Terrible after-sales service.

- Short car battery life.

- Need to do frequent maintenance on aircond.

- Specialist workshop very niche.

- The car is heavy due to safety European requirements.

- It is not designed to carry a lot of passengers.

- Rear seat bit cramp.

Lastly:

- The car brings me anywhere in peninsular Malaysia and Singapore for the past 8 years without any single roadside breakdown.

- Thought for another Peugeot provided there is no SC warranty period.

- Always saves our family in emergency situation due to great handling and braking system, regardless it intermittent screeching disc sound 😂.
