Owner Review: From Myvi to Myvi, My 2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV 01

Basic information about my car:

2018 Perodua Myvi 1.5 AV (Red)

Reasons why I bought this car:

window.googletag = window.googletag || {cmd: []}; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.defineSlot('/22557728108/my_article_fourthp_under_pc', [ 728, 90 ], 'div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.pubads().collapseEmptyDivs(); googletag.enableServices(); });
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1685525140735-0'); });

Always have been a long term user of Perodua cars, owned a “Lagi Best” generation Myvi  1.3 (manual transmission) and an Axia. Brought over the Myvi 1.3 manual to West Malaysia when I manage to land a job here leaving my Axia back in Sarawak where my mother in law is using it. Since my wife was slightly over 150cm, driving the Myvi 1.3 manual was a challenge to her, having to use the clutch very often during jam and peak hours. So we decided to trade in the Myvi 1.3 manual to the 3rd Gen Myvi 1.5AV auto for a more convenient driving experience

Car selection process
- I had a budget of RM500 for monthly payment.

- Models that I have considered include: the 3rd gen Saga 1.3L VVT, 3rd gen Proton Persona 1.6L VVT, and Proton Iriz 1.3L, Perodua Bezza 1.3L.

Reasons why I chose this car:

Truth be told, the 3rd generation Myvi has the best look among all the other car choices that I have considered. For the first time I think that it was cool looking car for a national car and was somewhat feeling proud of our local Engineers in the design. It was also among the first national car to have Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) like pre-collision warning, pre-collision braking, pedal misoperation control and front departure alert.

User experience:
- I have already done: 40000km

- My average fuel consumption is 11-14 KM/L

Switching from the previous gen Myvi Lagi Best, this is definitely a big step up. Very sporty looks on the outside as well as the inside, but the steering design could be nicer in my opinion. Definitely bang for the buck with all the safety features in place for the highest spec variant. What surprised me is how spacious the backseat is.

With my seating position in the driver seat, I have at least 1 to 2 fist of spacing between my knees and the back of the driver seat. The added USB port on the side driver seat is definitely a plus point for the convenience of the back passenger to be able to charge their phones while enjoying the ride.

As for the driving experience, it is definitely more planted than the previous gen Myvi. Although the throttle response and power delivery is not as instant as compared to the previous gen, it is designed to be so for better fuel efficiency. Throttle response is acceptable when the gears downshift as you step on the pedal to overtake vehicles. Manoeuvring around curvy roads is very easy thanks to the electric power steering.

Fuel consumption is not exactly stellar, but definitely helps being more light footed on my daily drives. The automatic start/stop is somewhat a love-hate situation, at times I appreciate the function when the engine shut offs and I know the traffic light will be red for a while. Definitely helps to save fuel although not much, but as it accumulates it do amount to quite a lot. At times I hate when the engine shuts off when you’re in a slow moving traffic. So making use of the automatic start/stop very much depends on situations.

The pre-collision braking on Advanced Safety Assist system is one of the function that I appreciate most, and I hate to admit it but, it really does safe me countless times assisting in braking which has help to avoid collision. The pre-collision warning and braking only works for lower speeds, below 30kM/h. Sadly it is not upgradable to the latest version (ASA 3.0) where the pre-collision warning and braking works on higher speed.

Pros of my car:

  • Very spacious backseat after setting the front chair to my preferred seating position
  • Teh tarik hooks on both the back of the front driver and passenger seats
  • Convenient USB socket on the side of driver’s seat
  • Very convenient and useful TnG card reader
  • Good throttling response when you put your pedal to the metal for overtaking
  • Adjustable headlamp levels to adjust beam level as needed

Cons of my car:

  • Aircond chrome trim that glares the heck out of your eyes during sunny days
  • Info on odometer (only able to view one info at a time, unlike the previous gen myvi you can see combination of total trip with trip A, trip B or fuel consumption)
  • Wiper spray nozzle only shoots a small stream of water instead of spreaded stream like in the previous gen Myvi
  • Bad heat insulation on the hand brake area, feels warm after a long drive
  • Smaller view angle of side mirror
  • Mediocre speaker
  • Delays between audio and video when playing video on the phone through Bluetooth connection
