Since its start in May 2021, the facility, combined with factory roof solar panels, has cut CO2 emissions by 32,406 tonnes, exceeding the annual forecast of 11,536 tonnes.
It has also generated 45.78 GWh of energy, saving over RM 10 million in electricity costs, or approximately 11 percent in 2023 since its commissioning. The facility covers 23.4 acres and shelters 2,880 new cars.
Dr Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of Proton added “This honour reinforces our commitment to drive the company forward with more green initiative projects, in line with the country’s goal to become a carbon neutral nation by 2050. PROTON is not resting on its laurels after receiving this accolade and we will continue to embolden our efforts in cultivating an ecosystem of green investments.”
Since 2015, Proton's green initiatives have saved RM20 million and reduced over 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
With a 10-year Energy Roadmap starting in 2020, Proton plans to expand solar PV systems and implement battery energy storage, district cooling systems, and waste heat recovery, aiming to align with Malaysia's goals to reduce carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2025 and 60 percent by 2035.
This accolade from NEA 2023 further underscores Proton's dedication to further green initiatives, supporting Malaysia's target to become carbon neutral by 2050.
