Nickel is necessary for the production of lithium-ion batteries, and Indonesia has the world’s largest nickel reserve. This has attracted investments from Hyundai, CATL, and Tesla. Reuters reports that Tesla will visit Indonesia next month to discuss possible investment for its electric vehicle supply chain.
Indonesia and Tesla had already been in talks of a giant contract in the recent months.
President Joko Widodo said “It’s very important because we have a great plan to make Indonesia the biggest producer of lithium batteries and we have the biggest nickel (reserves).”
Tesla is ready to offer a giant long-term contract so long as the nickel is mined in an efficient and environmentally friendly way.
Besides Tesla, Indonesia’s large nickel reserves has also attracted investment from Hyundai (1.5 billion USD) and CATL (5.1 billion USD).
