With test drive queues up till 3 am, Xiaomi SU7 BEV is completely sold out for 2024

Perhaps the hottest thing out of China recently, the Xiaomi SU7 battery electric vehicle (BEV) has clocked a record 88,898 'firm orders' within 24 hours of its launch – totally selling out the model for 2024, the company announced on its Weibo profile.

'Firm orders' in the Chinese context means cars that customers have paid a non-refundable deposit to lock in their configurations, making it a better yardstick than just pre-order or simple bookings. Deliveries for customers who've paid their booking will commence in April.

Despite the car's prevalent 'out of stock' status, it still hasn't stopped people from flooding showrooms nationwide. Chinese media reports that people have scheduled test drives up to 3 am, though priority is given to those that have paid their deposit.

Not a bad response given that the SU7 is the tech giant's first foray into making cars. Xiaomi partners with BAIC (a brand that's coming to Malaysia) to build the SU7 at its new Beijing plant.

The SU7 is available in three variants: the Standard, Pro, and Max. The former two are powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 295 PS and 400 Nm, but they differ in battery capacity. The standard SU7 features a 73.6 kWh battery, providing a CLTC-rated range of 700 km on one charge.

In contrast, the SU7 Pro boasts the furthest range among the range, sporting a 94.3 kWh battery and delivering a CLTC-rated range of 830 km on a single charge.

Regarding charging, both the SU7 and SU7 Pro utilise a 400V battery architecture. The SU7 requires 25 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while the SU7 Pro takes 30 minutes to achieve the same charging range.

Meanwhile the SU7 Max has a 673 PS / 838 Nm two-motor (all-wheel drive) setup linked to a 101 kWh CATL Kirin battery for a CLTC-rated range of 800 km.

Using an ultra-fast DC charger, the SU7 Max can accumulate a range of up to 510 km within a brief 15-minute charge. Achieving a charge from 10% to 80% requires only 19 minutes.
