BMW parts are pretty much all the same on all the series. Starting with 1-series up to X7. Though different trim levels are available. For example full leather interior is not available on lower series.
How old of a BMW are we talking about? Some are more complex than others. For example, I have an E34 5-series from 1989 and it has a fairly thick service manual. The next model of 5-series, the E39, has a repair manual that comes in two volumes that same size, one dedicated solely to electrical systems - it's just that much more complex, and we're talking about a car that's nearly 20 years old. I don't even want to think what a new one is like to work on. Parts can be found fairly inexpensively, even for OEM-quality items, online or at local stores, if you know where to shop. Ebay can even be a good source, and you can get things from all over the world relatively easy that way. I once found a shop on eBay that actually happened to be about 10 miles away from me and I purchased quite a few items from them during the time they were in business. But parts costs aren't going to be your major expense, unless you do the repair work yourself; labor is going to be what costs you. Whilst cleaning out a few old boxes the other day I stumbled across a receipt for some work I had done 14 years ago. The original estimate for the service was $350, but after a few items were discovered the estimate rose to $1,950, with the final bill close to $2,200. This was just for a Service II and replacement of a few worn items such as a window regulator and some bushes. At least two thirds of the bill was for labour, and this was done at an independent shop and not at a dealer. In summary, parts ,can, be cheap, but labour will rarely be unless you're doing the work yourself. BMWs are quite enjoyable to drive, but they're not exactly paragons of reliability - just ask my tow truck driver. This coming from someone that babies his BMW, even though it's not particularly rare or exotic, but is just a nice, older, mid-sized sedan.
Most new cars have plastic in their engines ton save weight and money. The BMW is no doubt included.
There's no telling what the first 5 failures will be, but I can tell you this: they won't be cheap to fix. It could be anything from ball joints and bushings to oil and coolant leaks, to climate control problems, any number of electronic failures, and even internal engine failure. Why get a BMW and all the problems they have when you can get a Lexus and just change the oil and follow the book on maintenance? I'd buy a 200000 mile Lexus over a 95k mile BMW all day long.
Yes, and some are notorious for failing. E.g. radiator necks. I’ve replaced radiators on every BMW I’ve owned more than four years old. That’s 10 cars. The plastic necks crack and can’t be properly repaired. So you must replace the entire radiator. My other least favorite plastic parts on a BMW are the plastic wheels used in the window regulator assemblies. Repair is not possible, so the entire regulator assembly must be replaced at huge cost. You must take apart the door assembly including the air bag. my newer BMWS (4 cars) have not yet had those problems Of course, all manufacturers use lots of plastic.
Yes, that will fit fine. It’s the same part. However, note that if you have a Sedan or Station Wagon, you have to use one off of a Sedan or Station Wagon, and if you have a Coupe or Convertible, you have to use one off a Coupe or Convertible.
I'd suggest that if the part number is the same the part is likely to be the same. Really you need BMW or the O Cs to be sure. For sure much of the car will be identical.
A reliability nightmare? I should have noticed that in the last nearly 250K… Parts that melt? The hell are you talking about? Hoses become brittle over time indeed but those are thermoplasts and are just fine in heat. Such parts are used litterally everywhere on every car from every manufacturer. I suggest you look up the BMW B58. Pretty neat engine. BMW designed the engine and Toyota gave their input and list of requirements. BMW will also share engines with the entire Toyota Diesel line-up.
A few years ago BMW did some tests to answer this question. They found that accelerating at full throttle, but shifting up at relatively low rpm (2500rpm as I recall) was most fuel efficient. Of course this meant they were using a car with a manual transmission. The reason this is most efficient is that an internal combustion engine is most efficient at full throttle. Using part throttle is just forcing the engine to pull air in through a restriction, which wastes energy. On the other hand, the faster the engine turns the more energy is lost to friction. So there’s a kind of optimum at low rpm but full throttle.
