hyundai sonata overheating Q&A Review

What is wrong with my Hyundai 01 Sonata GLS? The sensor goes on and off. Camshaft/oxygen sensor overheating is DX. Is it a costly fix? I have spent so far US $500+ to fix, but sensor still goes on and off.

This probably requires a shop technician. Shop around, get estimates from at least three shops. Compare what they think is wrong with it. Ask why the repair they propose will fix the problem.

The newer Hyundai's drive nice (so do for Kia and Genesis Motors too), are they now reliable vehicles? But how about for the Fiat Chrysler group (so do Alfa Romeo), as long as HMG might bring some updates about them being in crisis [through sales]?

When I was sixteen in 1992, I was looking at a 1984 Honda CRX because it was soooo cool. Before my Mom gave me the A-OK, she bought me a copy of the Edmunds Lemond-Aid Guide to help evaluate my choice. I cracked the spine on that faster than any school book, that’s for sure! I scanned through until I found my Honda CRX and saw the glowing review, I knew I was good to go. I had a bunch of friends over and we spent some time looking up various cars. For fun, we tried to find the worst car we could think of. My friend and I had recently test drove a Russian Lada utility vehicle. The thing was brand new and was just garbage… I mean, the shifter stick bent noticeably as you moved it around! Of course, it was $6000 brand new, so what do you expect, but still! Anyway, we looked that up in the guide, and sure enough it said something like “this is the probably the poorest designed, worst build vehicle ever made”. It went on for several paragraphs trash-talking this joke of a vehicle and laying out - in detail - its many, many flaws. So my Mom says, “hey, look up my car”. So we did… her 1986 Hyundai Stellar. Not a word of a lie… it simply said: “The only car worse than a Lada”. And they were right. That car was horrible. I learned to drive in that deathtrap. The wheels would lock on dry pavement! The understeer was comical. The door alignment was such that you had to pull up on the handle to get it to close. The engine was somehow quieter at speed than it as at idle. It overheated in the spring or summer and stalled constantly in the winter. Just a terrible, terrible car. I swore I would never ever drive a Hyundai. In 2010 I was shopping for a new vehicle and I was looking at a Honda Fit. I noticed a Hyundai dealershipo across the street, so I walked over to see if they’d improved. The cars certainly looked nice enough. I took a Sonata for a test drive. The Sonata’s road/engine noise and rattly feel was enough to convince me that no… nothing had changed. Sure it was better than my Mom’s Stellar, but this was a brand new vehicle and it felt and sounded like a 10 year old beater. I bought the Fit. Four years later my Honda Fit had an airbag recall and they gave me a rental allowance while it was getting fixed. You’d think they’d make sure their courtesy cars were Hondas, but oddly enough I was given a Hyundai Elantra. This was in 2014 and I assume it was pretty new. “Impressed” wasn’t quite the right word, but I could tell they’d come a ways. This was the first car I’d seen with a backup camera (they were certainly around since before then, but I hadn’t yet had the pleasure). The engine noise and general fit and finish was OK. Not great, but almost on par with my low-end Honda. After the Honda Fit, I upgraded a LONG way to a 2015 Tesla Model S P85D. I mean, that’s the other end of the spectrum and I can tell you one thing - I will never drive a gas car again of any brand! I didn’t have it long before losing it (and the Honda) to a house fire last July. We replaced the Fit with a Chevy Bolt EV, and when insurance finally paid out on the Tesla, I didn’t get enough to buy another Model S, unfortunately. Prior to settling on a Model 3, however, the Hyundai Kona EV had just hit the market. I didn’t get the Kona because its rear seat is so incredibly useless that my young child couldn’t fit back there (I’m tall and the seat has to go all the way back). But other than that… I *was* impressed this time! I’m not going to say it was as good as the Tesla on the whole, but it gave it a run for the money! The fit and finish is excellent. Seat comfort is good. Tech is… well, it needs refining but it is very good. Performance is adequate and range is excellent. I think it looks great too. I realize I took your question about brand reliability and morphed it into a suggestion to buy an electric car (and seriously - they’re better in every conceivable way except if you really do “need” to regularly drive more than 200 miles at a time and simply “can’t” handle 30 minute breaks for charging [and if you feel that’s the case, I’d suggest taking a hard look at priorities])… but I can tell you that if your family fits in the Kona EV that you can’t go wrong with it. I may not consider Hyundai to be a good brand, but I consider THAT Hyundai to be an excellent vehicle, and if they focus on that winner and expand their line to include more EVs then they’ll be a contender for sure (I also test drove their Ioniq EV and was equally impressed and if the range was just a bit more I probably would have gone for it). Best of luck!

How much gas does the 2011 Hyundai Sonata car use when it is idling for 7 hours?

A petrol car would blow up way before 7 hours due to overheating. Unless it was a Range Rover in which case it would blow up after 1 hour. A Trumph Stag after about 10 minutes.

I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with 100K miles on it, and it needs a new engine (which will cost ~$5k). Should I get a new engine and hope to drive it for 5+ more years, or sell it and get rid of it?

DO NOT DRIVE IT EVEN IF YOU CAN Swapping in a used engine should cost you much less than this. You mentioned "the engine blew". That does not mean the entire engine is bad. I suspect your cooling system failed and the vehicle finally overheated. That usually does not result in damage to the engine block. Far more common is just the requirement for cylinder head work. If you continue to drive this car and it has a head gasket problem, then the problem will only get more expensive to fix. For $5000, I can replace a BMW engine. Your quote is absurd for a Hyundai. There is no need for this engine to be new given your car's overall age and mileage. Modern engines routinely are usable for more than 200,000 miles, so swapping in a 60-80K miles used engine parts would be fine. I think it's realistic to get your car fixed for less than $2000. That will never happen at a dealership, but is realistic at an independent automotive repair shop. You will also need to replace the failed parts of your cooling system.

Why is my Hyundai Sonata 2004 overheating while on dashboard normal, radiator fan never work, and thermostat won't open?

If you are a bit handy, you could disconnect the fan’s plug, and connect 12 volt to it and see if it works. When you say the engine overheats-how do you know that? Also, what is “Dashboard normal”? The thermostat will connect the fan when needed. Engine temp. goes up substantially after shutting the engine off-does the fan come on then?

2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited Sport 2.0T completely died on highway and has not started since. It has gas and oil but doesnt even try to turn over at all. I was thinking it was maybe a fuel pump issue. Anyone have suggestions?

If it does not even try to turn over ie no noise from a solenoid trying to engage the starter you have an electrical problem. Start at the battery — do you have 12 volts? Turn on the headlights — do you still have 12volts and is the voltage sinking down? If it is replace the battery. Is the crank position of the ignition key supplying current to the starter solenoid? If no check for a fuse and check for continuity through the starter solenoid. Solenoid has power and continuity it may be stuck. Tap with a hammer (not heavy blows) with an assistant to turn the key. If this works you need a reconditioned or new starter motor assembly. If you do have clicking of the starter solenoid and is attempting to turn the engine yoy could have a faulty starter motor providing 1 checks out or the engine might be seized in which case it came to a sudden stop as you mention. To check this (down to number 4 since you say the starter does not even try to turn over you check the cheaper things first) get a spanner on the nut of an engine driven pulley but preferably the crankshaft pulley if you can get at it. Ensure ignition is off and see if you can turn the engine. If no then call for a tow truck. You could have a blown head gasket and the engine has hydrauliced but you may have an internal failure from of lack of oil or gross overheating or mechanical failure. You now have to price repair and decide if it is viable.
