The Tribeca was a low volume seller, but it was an excellent luxury SUV, only a five seater, but high quality throughout, and had all the built in safety, versatility, and reliability inherent in all Subaru s, including the standard four wheel drive which allows Subarus to keep going in all weather conditions when most 2WD vehicles would need a two truck. The Tribeca was designed to withstand high speed a rear end collision while protecting it's occupants. Probably one of the safest SUV's ever built.
Alone? No. With a friend or my wife? Definitely! In fact I already did… I flew to Colorado, bought an $880 Subaru Justy, and drove it 2000 miles home to central Massachusetts for fun. It was great, though I would have preferred to have more spare parts and tools along as an insurance policy. We made it home no problem though, just had to replace one tire in Chicago, and the muffler fell off in New York about 150 miles from home. I would prefer to have a lot more time to do it next time - I only took a week off work so it was mostly driving and not much sightseeing/fun stuff. Next time I would take a couple months off and really make the trip count.
It’ll have to have a carburator, and not electronic fuel injections. Per wikipedia on carbs, In the U.S. market, the last cars using carburetors were: 1990 (General public) : Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, Buick Estate Wagon, Cadillac Brougham, Honda Prelude (Base Model), Subaru Justy. 1991 (Police) : Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor with the 5.8 L (351 cu in) V8 engine. I’ll guess the ones before the Prelude have electric windows, and the Justy almost certainly didn’t. But, they vanished after ‘90. I doubt the ’91 Cop Car had electric windows to go with its Cop Engine, Cop Suspension and Cop Brakes, so that’ll be the last one plausible in the US. It you’re on a mission from God, you can take that baby and hit it!
Amazing 4X4 transmission, reliable engines, decent interior design, you will get your money’s worth with every model. Buy according to your needs and your wallet. It’s worth going to the deep end if you can afford it. Entry-level models have trade-offs done comfort-wise, so they won’t feel luxurious. But you get the best bang for your buck with them. Not sure what the drive requires Down Under, I’ve never been. These cars are a common sighting in Canada and the US, as they perform superbly on ice and snow. Good luck!
The Justy has not been made for US sale for decades. There was a Daihutsu model that was a rebadged version. Are you wondering what cars competed against it in the 80's and 90's? Or are you wondering what car is available today in that market niche? Almost every car manufacturer offers a small entry level car. And even the cheapest sold today exceeds the Justy in performance, economy, safety, refinement, and features.
That all depends on what exactly the problem is and the logistics of accessing the service area on the vehicle. If it's just a bulb that's out I wouldn't expect to be charged more than half to an hours worth of labor. This assumes you have the typical car which a Subaru Justy is definitely that has fairly easy access to changing the signal bulbs out which most cars do but some cars for example like a Toyota Celica or FSR/BRS requires you to take apart nearly the whole front end to get into the light bulb housing area which is a ridiculous design and they'll bill you out for 6–8 hours worth of Labor to change a bulb. This is typically true for any car that has a sloped front headlamp that's buried very deep in the nose. If it's the actual turn signal switch on the column then you could get into 2–3 hours worth of repair costs plus parts.
When I bought my Subaru Justy in Colorado, I flew to Denver with a fellow gearhead and we drove it home to the East Coast. It was 2000 miles and we only stopped to get gas, food, and sleep, usually in the car. A Justy is not a large car and it wasn’t particularly comfortable sleeping in the driver and passenger seats. The longest straight-through aside from fuel stops was from Chicago to Boston to pick up the car we drove at the airport, 993 miles in one shot.
Back in the 80’s there was a quaint little car called the Subaru Justy. It had the distinction of being imported in large numbers to some of the toughest terrains on the planet. The reason was because of its small size, full-time all wheel drive and amazing reliability. Also click and clack fro NPRs car talk often highlight Toyota as the best ever. Thanks for the question.
I vaguely remember the Jeep Grand Wagoneers soldiering into the 1990s with a carb up on it's 360CID V8. I would guess the Dodge Ram pickup which used a completely different, utterly unrelated motor found fuel injection about the same time. Just did a quick search and Dodge added TBI to the truck in 89 and discontinued the Wagoneer (with it's carb and all) in 1991. I know, not cars, but here in the Southwest US, people use them like cars. Edit: I just remembered the Subaru Justy had a carb in the 90s. Wikipedia tells me it got fuel injection in late 1991.
