vw beetle irs Q&A Review

What are some things to look for in a used VW Beetle if you are seeking something specifically to convert to a Baja Bug?

IRS - you don’t want the swing axel versions for that. When Gary Emory invented the Baja Bug it was to get his daily driver back on the road after a collision. So damaged sheet metal in the areas which you’re going to trim anyway is not a problem. Don’t worry about rusty floors. It your going to do the Baja, welding in new floors won’t be a challenge at all. If you’re doing it for street the rust on visible body panels is less desirable. If you’re building a SCORE Class 5/1600, you’ll find that is dwarfed by other concerns.

Is it possible to buy a Mexican made VW Beetle and import it into the United States?

Well, I'm not the Mexican IRS. But, guess what? In my personal opinion it could be quite possible. You can buy it, then you most pay the taxes, in USA for the VW Vocho 100% Made in Puebla, México. You know in México everything is possible As we say: “ With 💰 dance the Monkey “ Simple & Easy

Will a 1971 VW Beetle 1302 (super beetle) make a good Baja bug?

If you can change the front axle, i think. The 71 was early Super, flat windshield, it may have had the old front end. Plus it had non solid, Half shaft rear axles. IRS rear end. The early Supers were a pseudo Super, a mix of old technology (non strut front end). It’s been years. Hell sell it to me, I’ll make it look like it’s just came off the showroom floor. I’ve done 2 dozen as well as a Ghia vert ‘63 and a single cab, same year Mj

Was the Karmann Ghia as amazing a car as my family reminisce? Why?

Probably not It was after all literally a vw beetle with a fancy body I have helped rebuild several (a mate owned a vw shop for a while and I worked there) and they are a nice car to look at (for some people anyway) but they were never that fast or powerful, their handling was ‘swingarm vw’ standard and their brakes were…. ‘decorative’, pretty much like any early drum all round beetle…. For those that dont know why the ‘swingarm’ suspension was a big deal, the early vw rear suspension only had a ‘universal joint’ at the gearbox (the later 70’s ones with IRS had another one at the wheel as well) What that means is that when the wheel was at its proper ride height, it was vertical… wheel goes up and it starts to lean in at the top compared to the bottom. like this / \ When you accelerated out of a corner, the opposite happened, the rear would lift (unlike almost any other car which the rear ‘squats’ when you accelerate) It also means the wheel would now ‘lean’ with the top outside the bottom (in some modified ones you could literally get the wheels at almost 90 degrees to each other like this \ / So mid corner, you start to accelerate out of the corner, the body is leaning from the cornering force- and look how narrow that rear track has become…. :-O Learning to drive a fast vw is a totally different driving technique to any other car (save a Porsche) Rear engine moves the center of balance backwards, so it handles unlike any front engined car You can see what I mean by the angle of the wheels changing in this picture The only ‘uni joints’ are right up against the gearbox in the middle of the car (where the silver hose clamp is visible on the right hand side of the gearbox) and its a rigid axle all the way to the wheel….

Are VW Beetles unsafe?

The beetle design goes back to 1932, and approval to built them came in 1936 and construction stated in 1940. The very last original beetles were built in 2000. That's a 60 year production history. The early beetles were easy to roll if you mishandled it, but they were slow so it wasn't a real problem. From 1968 they widened the front suspension, and reset the rear suspension and that improved handling a lot. They also fitted a collapsible steering column and, outside the USA, the 1500 versions got excellent front disc brakes. And they changed to 12 volts for much better lighting. And then from 1969 and 1970 (depending on which country) the 1500 and 1600 models got a much better double joint (so called IRS) suspension which improved handling again. I've been driving my 1970 beetle for 50 years now and have never felt unsafe in it. It's true it does not have air bags or side intrusion bars in the doors or a dedicated crush zone at either end like more modern cars, but they are still a great little car with lots of character. Even with their low power (53 hp for my 1500) , the light body weight means it keeps up with traffic ok and can cruise happily all day at 60–70 mph.

How do I improve VW bug handling?

When you say “VW Bug” I’m assuming you’re talking about “classic” air cooled VW Bugs from 1948 to 1980. And when you say “handling” I’m assuming you mean “how can I make it corner at a higher rate of speed without terrifying myself or others” Yeah baby. One of my friends raced a ’63 Beetle in SCCA GT5 for a number of years in the early 90s. And drove it on the street. You can do that too. (note: that’s not him above) But doing it is complicated by the fact that there are a number of variations, which I’ll summarize as follows: Classic Beetle. These bad boys have king and link pin front suspensions with transverse torsion bar springs, and swing-axle rear suspension (pivots at the transmission, doesn’t at the wheel). This is every Beetle from origin until the 1969 model year, so several million of them. IRS Beetle. These still have the classic front, but modified the rear to have a “modern” half-shaft power take-off, with a CV joint at both the wheel and transmission ends. Bottom line: the rear wheel can move up and down without changing it’s positioning relative to vertical. This is most of the Beetles from 1969 through the end of the 1973 model year. Super Beetle. These have a radically different front suspension using McPherson struts, which move the suspension end points to the body, which is bolted to the frame (and which is made of much less stout stuff than the pan). They still have the IRS rear. This is some of the Beetles made from 1970 through the 1973 model year, and all Beetles from the 1974 onward. You do have to decide what you want though - do you want more neutral flat handling, or do you want more controllable lift-throttle oversteer? For street cars, neutral is a good choice; for track, autocross, spirited driving… you’ll want lift-throttle There are some semi-obvious tricks here. First thing is you want everything in the “right” state - and they nearly always are not. You’ll also want to replace the worn out shit. Ball joints. Bushings. On Super Beetles, front coil springs. Everything. Get it ,RIGHT, before you start fucking with it. You’ll want to index the rear trailing arms, adjusting them to the right drop angle which is needed as the torsion springs wear over time and you are very much not sitting where you should be. Guaranteed. If you’re super-duper wanting to be spot-on-perfect… you’ll want to replace the front and rear torsion springs. This is… mmmm…. ok, it’s not for the faint of heart. You’ll need to find or make tools that no one has seen in years, (well, nearly no one), you’ll need to source the parts which are no longer off-the-shelf items, etc. You can’t even find this in restoration circles typically, but you ,MAY, be able to find this stuff in Vintage Formula Vee circles, as they run the same parts, and ,HAVE, to run stock parts. You’ll also want to replace your shocks, and your steering dampner. The hot-hot setup is Koni, assuming you can find the parts. 2nd choice - for handing, remember - is Bilstein which are readily available but expensive. Failing that, I’m a fan of KYB. You can get OEM equivalent parts from Cofap, the Mexican producer, and rarely you see Sachs which is the OEM; they’re pretty good but they’re oil-based (like Koni) but not adjustable and not as precise). While you’re in there, fix your brakes too. You’ll be glad you did. If you can, find a local place that can turn your drums, re-line your shoes, and then radius your shoes to your drums. It’ll improve your braking by 200% and doesn’t cost any more. A shop that specializes in big trucks will likely be able to do this, call around. It’s not as common as it used to be. Then alignments. There’s an art to lubing and re-shimming the front of a king-and-link front end that’s nearly lost. Get that done. Once all the parts are moving the way they should be, you can get an alignment; until you do, it’s not going to “take”. Same with the Super Beetles. The front tub wasn’t really designed to carry the torsional loads that the strut suspension creates tend to warp the metal over time, meaning that you’re nearly certainly not running where you should be. Note that getting an alignment may involve tweaking the body. Once it’s all in alignment, or in the process of getting it there, a strut tower brace will help — note that these are long out of stock, and will need to be fabricated, and you’ll want the X-brace versus just the straight tower-to-tower version. For Super Beetles in particular (but still a good idea for the king pin cars) consider new wheels. Odds are the wheels on it are not straight, have run-out issues. That exacerbates the natively wobbly front end on Super Beetles due to the whole sheet metal thing. New, straight wheels will make your car much happier. I frequently buy good 5.5″ Brazilian wheels - which are all chromed - and take them to a chrome shop and de-chrome them, then bead blast them and paint appropriately for the model in question. 5.5’s also means I can safely run up to 205 tires (my fave is 185/70, btw). Once your old clapped-out Beater Beetle is new and shiny in the suspension department, drive it a bit. You ,MAY, have just solved your handling problem. Or you may just be getting started. Things to think about in addition: front anti-sway bar. A stiffer bar may be in order. How stiff will depend on the rear, because you’ll want the rear stiffer than the front to get some oversteer. rear anti-sway. For Classic Beetles, you want something called a Z-bar, which is used to compensate for the fact that on swing axle cars if one wheel goes positive camber the other goes negative, and this sort of counters that — versus a regular sway bar which has a jacking effect. You also might consider a thing called a camber compensator which is a big leaf spring across the bottom of the engine pushing up on the half shafts, to reduce the tendency to produce something called “camber jacking” where the wheels go strongly negative an push the back of the car up. For IRS cars, you can add a conventional sway bar kit. You’ll potentially need to futz with it to get the adjustments and size right relative to the front bar. You can give some thought to lowering the car. This is a bigger deal than meets the eye, and you’ll need to decide on that before you start (which is of course why I’m putting it near the end). You can lower the back by changing the calculations on indexing the rear torsion bar (if that doesn’t make sense to you, you need to read the manual on how you do that) to set the rear height lower. For the front, you’ll need new parts. Your best bet is just to buy a new lowered adjustable front beam, complete. You’ll get new parts, and you’re good to go once you bolt it up and adjust it. You can sort of half-ass it with lowered spindles which don’t change the suspension but drop the front by raising the spindle height - not bad for show cars or cruisers but it completely fucks your steering geometry (which wasn’t great to begin with). Or you can run the DIY track and pull the beam, split it, weld in adjusters all yourself. Saves a ton of money, if your time is worth zero. Or maybe a negative number. Hard to say. Anyway, if you’re going to lower, do that as you’re going through the whole suspension. If you DO lower, note that you need to think about ground clearance. The SCCA has rules for this - 3.5″ is the minimum. It’s a good number. The stock Beetle is about 6″, so there’s room to drop it a bit. But you’ll want to do it right, as outlined above. Do all this, get better tires… you’re going to be much happier. Oh - one other weird thing to note. The swing axle rear ends are much, much happier with tires that have a rounded profile than a square profile. See the photo for example here… Good luck.

Does God mind if you break someone's heart?

Thats a really good question. I would think irs going to depend on a lot of things, like a lot of sin I believe that God considers the situation surrounding it. As humans we get get our heart broken easily. I had my heart set on a modified 1981 VW Beetle. I made the deal and shook the hand and left to get the cash. When I return an hour later the car was gone. I was definitely heartbroken. Lol. So clearly you can’t be fully responsible for the feelings of others, because although the seller didn’t honour the agreement he didn’t commit a sin. But just like my situation with the car I expect people to honour their words and so does God. But the biggest problem with people is so much of what we do is based on feelings. And feelings come and go like the waves on the ocean. We should understand that and think more about our actions and be asking why we are doing what we are doing. Relationships are feeding based far too often. Of course feeling needs to be a part of it but not the reason we connect with a girlfriend or boyfriend. There needs to be more thought and praying in advance before the commitment.
