VW e-Beetle trademarked, iconic model to return as an EV?

A member of the VWIDTalk forum recently found evidence that Volkswagen has reserved the European trademarks for the name e-Beetle as well as other air-cooled era classics. The “e” in the name gives you the idea that it will be an electric vehicle (EV), but does this mean that we would see the return of the beloved Volkswagen Beetle?

Along with the e-Beetle, VW has also reserved e-Samba along with e-Karmann and the e-Kubel. But you must be thinking, VW already has an ID brand for their EV range, why do they need to revive the classics?

It is speculated that the ID brand will be reserved for all-new nameplates while the “e-” branding will be used for the modernised classics.

If you think about it, these classic air-cooled cars are relatively easy to convert into EVs considering how the engine is in the rear where a modern-day electric motor would sit. So, shoe-horning VW’s MEB platform into the body of these classic cars wouldn’t be a difficult task.

It would be interesting to see where the e-Beetle if it ever comes to being, would sit. Will VW continue where they left off when the Beetle was discontinued in 2019 and be classed in an expensive “lifestyle” car? Or will they return back to basics and market the electric Beetle as an entry-level EV?

If they do the latter and price the Beetle as a cheap EV to compete with the Nissan Leaf, the Bug could be quite a hit in our opinion.

What about the other classics that VW has already trademarked? How would the e-Samba measure up against the electric Microbus known as the ID Buzz? Also, would you like to see the return of the Karmann-Ghia in electric form?

And what would you say to a Jeep-like VW electric off-roader with the e-Kubel? And what about the other air-cooled type cars like the Rabbit, Dasher, or Quantum?

We know that the boffins in VW did declare once that they had no plans for an electric Beetle but the latest turn of events says differently.
