Who owns the worlds's most expensive cars?

Top 10 Most Expensive Cars Owned By Celebrities. ,10. KIM KARDASHIAN – FERRARI F430 PRICE: $186,925 Kim Kardashian, famous for a reality TV show, is often snapped in her black Bentley Continental GT. She’s recently been spotted in a Ferrari F430, which is much slicker. Apparently the vehicle demands a $3,812 monthly payment, on top of paying 20% upfront. Reality TV obviously pays! 9. PARIS HILTON – BENTLEY GT CONTINENTAL PRICE: $285,000 Paris Hilton added a diamond-encrusted dashboard to her pink Bentley and bought the car as a Christmas present for herself in 2008. Everything on the car is pink and it’s very bling (and over the top)! 8. P. DIDDY – MAYBACH PRICE: $360,000 This car was a very very generous 16th birthday present. Sean P. Diddy Combs gave it to his son Justin and because he couldn’t drive yet, included a driver to take him around New York City. Very flash for a first car! 7. DAVID BECKHAM- CUSTOM ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM DROPHEAD PRICE TAG- $407,000 This Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead has been customised especially for the family, with 24″ Savini Forged wheels, color-matched exterior trim and Beckham’s “23″ embroidered onto the seats.,6. JAY LENO – MERCEDES SLR MCLAREN PRICE: $450,000 Apparently the Mercedes SLR is Jay’s favourite car, although it’s certainly not his only vehicle. In fact, Leno collects cars (he stores them in his massive garage) and has created a Web site dedicated to them! 5. NICOLAS CAGE – FERRARI ENZO PRICE: $670,000 This Ferrari Enzo goes 0-60 in 3.4 seconds and only 399 have ever been produced.,4. JERRY SEINFELD – PORSCHE 959 PRICE: $700,000 Seinfeld has one of the largest Porsche collections in the world and one of these 46 cars is the $700,000 Porsche 959. Only 337 have ever been created and sadly Jerry can’t actually drive it in the US as it doesn’t pass US emissions test! 3. SIMON COWELL – BUGATTI VEYRON PRICE: $1,700,000 This car can get up to 267 mph and is the fastest car in the world. Perfect for the cockiest guy in show business. Could his ego get any bigger?,2. RAPPER BIRDMAN- BUGATTI VEYRON PRICE: $2 MILLION As well as being the fastest, the Bugatti Veyron is also one of the most expensive cars in the world. Birdman must love cruising in the most speedy street legal car on the planet.,1. JAY Z- MAYBACH EXELERO PRICE: $8,000,000 Jay Z can be seen driving the Maybach Exelero in his music video for the song, “Lost One”. It can reach a speed of 218.38mph.

Who are the most loved rappers in the US?

Historically, I'd argue 95% of people are familiar with or fans of Tupac and Biggie. Currently, Kanye West has the fame and Grammys for a strong case of popularity, also Jay Z has fans across generations and being married to probably the most famous person in the world helps a lot (same goes for Kanye). If you want to use earnings as measure then Dr. Dre and P. Diddy have strong cases. Snoop Dogg has been rapping forever it seems like and is America's friendly weed ambassador. Lastly, I will mention Eminem, seems like everyone in the world knows him, and he's one of the few non-African American prominent rappers. For younger people in their 20s, the Young Money generation comes to mind, artists like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. This really is an opinion question, but going off of awards, earnings and fame, those names above come to mind.

Who are the 10 celebrities who have better car collections than The Rock?

The celebrity lifestyle is undoubtedly very desirable, and so many people covet just a tiny chip of this beautiful block. But it's also costly and very demanding; Not for the fainthearted. The journey to the top, many will tell you, has many pricking thorns. This notwithstanding, amassing enough money to buy some of the most exotic cars in the world is a dream that most folks will only hold close to their hearts and never achieve. While driving a basic car or even the most endowed SUV will get the job done, celebrities own machines for the sake of being seen, living the part, and gaining respect. Otherwise, it wouldn’t make sense why anyone needs more than 100 cars in their garage like Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfield. Making a prestigious collection of ,supercars, is a deep demonstration of love for the four-wheeled machines and an appreciation of some of the finest things in life. Car collectors have also come to the realization and appreciation that this hobby is lucrative. It’s an investment that pays off, especially when some of their pieces gain extraordinary status in special classes. The mere fact that these collectibles are associated with a certain celebrity can uplift a car manufacturer's status so boldly that it gains millions of dollars in market worth. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson boasts some of the most prestigious rides that any man could drive. From a Pagani Huarya and a Rolls-Royce Wraith to a custom-built Ford F-150 pickup, he’s a man who lives large and rolls in rides worth his status. Not a bad thing for a man who built a household name in the world of wrestling and Hollywood movies. Let’s see the kind of cars that other equally gifted celebrities drive. 10 Jay Leno American TV host, comic, and writer Jay Leno is not only known for his easy demeanor but his many wins as the of Jay Leno The Tonight Show. Not only did he steer the show to greater heights during his time but he also won many accolades. This man has one of the most extraordinary cars collections and followers of Jay Leno’s Garage are charmed. Among Leno’s unique cars is a 1934 Duesenberg Walker Coupe valued at $20 million. His collection is estimated at $52 million and includes nearly every exotic car brand you can think of. A Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita, a McLaren F1, a 2006 Ecojet and many more are just a few under Leno’s name. Jerry Seinfeld Jerry Seinfeld,.Via : British GQ Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno compete more or less for the same spot in comedy and car collection. The debate on who owns the most expensive garage is a matter of speculation, particularly because Jerry keeps most details of his collection unknown. Jerry-Seinfeld,-3Via : British GQ What’s not in dispute, however, is that Jerry Seinfeld is a zealous car collector. Porsche cars are his first favorites and he once described the brand as the “essence of sports-car perfection.” His collection of Porsche cars is estimated at 80 but he has no less than 150 cars in total. 8 Lewis HamiltonSupercarss-1Celebrated Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton not only races cars but also lives his dreams by collecting as many as his money can allow. Part of his collection is a one-off 2012 Pagani Zonda 760LH. LH stands for Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton will also be the owner of a special Mercedes-AMG, that will have only 275 examples built. Hamilton continues his collaboration with Mercedes as an official driver and his contribution is highly valuable. 7 Floyd Mayweather Floyd Mayweather.Via :YouTube Floyd Mayweather boxed his way to the top of the world of boxing and, in the process, built an empire that he’s extremely proud of. His life is a clear reflection of the star he is. A good part of his accumulated wealth is invested in exotic cars. Floyd-Mayweather-1Via : YouTube Among Mayweather’s cars is a Maybach s600, a Bently Flying Spur, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a Lamborghini Aventador, among others. His cars are estimated at around $15million, making it a collection worth the attention of a star in his status. 6 James Hetfield James Hetfield.Via : Reddit James Hetfield, the lead man of renowned rock group Mettalica Band loves metals. When he isn’t touring the world or playing in the band, he enjoys hunting, beekeeping, farming, and….customising cars in his garage. He has built himself a magnificent collection of cars, some of the classic masterpieces that have a bold history as part of their story. James-Hetfield-1Via : YouTube His collection includes a beautifully painted 1953 Buick Skylark, 1948 Jaguar “Black Pearl, a 1934 Packard “Aquarius, among others. Almost all his cars have a certain measure of customization. 5 The Sultan of Brunei The Sultan of BruneiVia: 9ja Breed Royalty tastes really good, and no one knows this better than Hassan Bolkiah or Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. He comes in 2nd on the list of the top richest monarchs in the world. According to news, he earns $100 a second from oil earning. The cumulative amount is a staggering figure and too much wealth by any standards. brunei1-1Via : YouTube It’s not surprising, therefore, that the Sultan has a collection of more than 5000 cars to his name. He easily beats just about any other contender on this list. The Sultan has the world’s largest collection of cars, entailing about 380 Bentleys, over 100 Koenigsegg, 21 Lamborghinis, 11 Aston Martins, 179 Jaguars, and 209 BMWs. It’s a mouthwatering hobby for the 6-year old monarch. 4 Jay-Z Jayz rolls-royce-boat-tailVia :Byri As Hotcars reported in June 2021, rapper Jay Z could be the proud owner of the world’s most expensive Rolls-Royce. It’s worth a whopping $28 million, and it's bonkers in lots of ways. JayzVia : YouTube Part of his cars includes a 1993 Lexus GS300, a 2006 Pagani Zonda F, a 2004 Maybach Exelero and lots ,MORE AS, doubt the richest rapper on earth, Jay Z wealth gets plumper when combined with that of his wife, Beyonce. 3 David Beckham David BeckahamVia :Hotcars David Beckham does magic on a soccer pitch. He’s built a huge fortune as the world’s top player, part of which he spends on classy high-end cars. Beckham has a collection of just about any high-end brand you could think of. The retired David Beckham Maserati Levante Trofeo standingVia Maserati English footballer no doubt has enough money to live a high life and invest in some extraordinary ventures. You may know him as P.Didd, Puff Daddy, or simply Diddy, but he is still the same man regardless of the many references. He’s carved a name as a top rapper on the global scene. Like many celebrities of his status, he has an admirable collection of cars worth millions of dollars. P-Diddy-2Via : HotCars Classic cars such as a 1958 Corvette and modern rides such as a 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom and a 2019 Cadillac Escalade are just part of what he parks in his garage. How come rappers are so rich? Almost every rapper is wearing 100k watches and gold chains, driving Bentleys and Ferraris and living in mansions.

First of all, not all rappers are rich. Not the way it goes. It's like saying every lawyer is rich even though it's not it depends on the one. Some rappers are rich like the ones below. A good amount of them like the young rappers even some old rappers dont have all that money. Most of them just live in a normal house maybe worth around 300K USD or a bit more and ride a Mercedes. The music videos you see are not real how they live in mansions and ride rolls Royces are something. Heck, I had a Bentley and I crashed it when I was young that's how I learned my lesson on how to not waste money. Jay-Z and Queen Latifah have been around a long time. Are they friendly with each other? What’s the secret to their successes?

When singer, rapper and actress Queen Latifah realized how many young women are stuck in violent relationships, putting themselves down and dealing with other personal challenges, she decided to reach out. With her new book, Put On Your Crown, she tells NPR's Neal Conan that she hopes to encourage young women by admitting her own mistakes, and sharing the lessons she's learned. Latifah says she doesn't worry too much about opening up to the public about the abuse in her family or the loss of her brother. "I'm only going to give you what I want to give you of my life," she says. "When it comes to really trying to help someone better themselves or make better decisions, for me, that's the best way to do it." According to Latifah, sharing both the good and the bad of her life experience helps readers relate to her. She says it allows them to see that the important thing is what you do with the challenges life hands you. "It's how you respond to them that's going to make you who you are," she says. Among the many experiences Latifah candidly shares in her book is that of going broke. "Believe me," she says, "I've heard these stories from people who are much more successful than I am. It wasn't something that was unheard of, and I think, especially with our times, people go through these things." Latifah says the lesson she learned from going broke -- apart from how to restructure and manage her business -- was that losing everything happens to people on all economic levels. "You just have to figure out how to bounce back from those situations and learn from them," she says. Excerpt: 'Put On Your Crown' Queen Latifah Cover of 'Put On Your Crown' Put on Your Crown: Life-Changing Moments On The Path To Queendom By Queen Latifah Hardcover, 208 pages Grand Central Publishing List price: $20.00 It Takes a Team Most people don't have so much talent that they can become a success all on their own. We all need people to help us and lift us up. And other people need our help. When you put that together, you can create something really powerful. When you're trying to reinvent yourself, it's important to connect with people who can bring out your strengths, or who have strengths where you have weaknesses. You don't have to do it alone. There are so many creative people out there who are not tapping into their true abilities, and they have people around them who are probably feeling just as lost and scared as they are. Maybe they're about to lose a job, and they're wondering what to do next. But if you get together and talk about it, you may be just one conversation away from a great idea. Do some research, go on the Internet, make some calls, put in some time and have the courage to take it to another level. And don't tell me you're too old to try something new. The best teacher is a great student, so you should never stop learning. I don't care how old you are. My mother just turned 60 and she's taking piano lessons for the first time. When I was a kid I wanted to be a doctor. I'm not squeamish -- I'm fascinated by the human body and anything to do with medicine and the natural world. Anyone would assume that path is no longer open to me now, but not so fast. One of my favorite reality shows is TLC's Trauma: Life in the ER, and a couple of years ago I saw an episode about a 40-year-old medical intern. Most of his peers were half his age. But he just loved medicine, and always wanted to be a doctor, so mid-career he decided to go to medical school. He's probably the oldest intern in the country, and much greener than doctors who are years younger than him, but he has a lifetime of other kinds of experiences he brings to what he does now, and that gives a whole other layer of depth to what he does that his 25-year-old colleagues don't have. And he brings a passion to his work, because he appreciates this opportunity he's been given to practice medicine later in life. He'll be successful, because he had the guts and determination to follow his dream and make it happen. In these times you just can't assume that one job or career will sustain you for the rest of your life. Like Oprah said, you have to jump off the ship before it sinks. Don't just be the person who stands there and watches it until it's bubbling under the water. Ladies, I know I don't need to tell you, there is no such thing as job security anymore. That's why you shouldn't let a job define you. That's just a part of who you are, not the whole package. That's also why you need to diversify. Just like your investment portfolio should have stocks, bonds, a 401K and a savings account, you need to mix it up, so that if one thing drops, you still have other stuff to fall back on. We've known this in the music business for a long time. A rapper who just raps isn't going to have much of a career. From the time he starts rhyming he's thinking about ways to expand his brand with merchandizing and endorsement deals -- if he's smart. Record sales alone won't sustain him for the rest of his life, unless he happens to be Jay-Z, and even Jay makes his money from a million other things besides his music. I never really planned to do all of the things I do. But I'm one of these people who craves variety. Case in point: I love Asian food and tapas. My friends laugh at me when we go to a restaurant because I always have to order a few appetizers and entrees to share. I always want to taste a little of this and a little of that, especially if it's something I never tried before. The first time I went to Germany, I sat myself down at a local bar and tried 19 different beers. Obviously I didn't drink the whole bottle, but I wanted to sample everything, because I heard Germany was the place for beer. I love experiencing all the foods, music, fashion, art and architecture of different cultures. But half of the people who are with me will only eat at McDonald's, because it's what they know and they don't like venturing into unfamiliar territory. What a waste. I feel the same way about my career. That's why I called my last album Persona, with multiple versions of myself on the cover and a blend of difficult musical styles in each song. It was my way of saying, "You can't define me." And there are so many more things I want to try before I die. Talkin' About Evolution People ask me how I managed to reinvent myself so many times over the years. They see all the things I do and they assume they are second, third and fourth acts. But the fact is, all the things you see me doing -- my rapping, singing, and acting, the talk show, my brand building, were things I always had in me, I just didn't have the opportunity to show them all at once. Reinventing yourself isn't becoming a different person. It's bringing all the things you have inside of you out in another way. I knew I wanted to be more than just a hip hop artist. I thought maybe I'd rap and have my own management business on the side. But you never know where life is going to take you. There are so many roads, and sometimes they lead you to places you'd never imagine. The thing about following your passion and living in the moment is that you're able to see more openings than most people, and have the courage to jump through those doors. Polite, unassuming, effervescent even - hardly character traits one typically associates with rap superstars. "You caught me on a good day," says Jay-Z, shadow-boxing on the roof of a lower-Manhattan photo studio on a balmy afternoon. "Usually, I don't talk so much." He's not just talking, though. Between feints, parries and combinations, he's rapping at me, too. It's a new song, as yet (and perhaps forever) unrecorded, called "Black Republican". The words have been spilling out from down on the street, his arm around my shoulders, rhythm unbroken as we transfer from elevator to staircase, all the way up and outside. We lean over the side of the building, staring down at the West Side Highway, contemplative for a moment. But the lyrics keep coming. Is he really that most unusual of beasts, a right-wing African-American? "I should be," he says. "I'm in that tax bracket." But actually, in last year's American election, Jay-Z voted Democrat. "Too much thug in me," he deadpans, in a neat line that rhymes with the one that went before it, which also happened to rhyme with the one that went before that, and so on, all the way back down to 15th Street. Jay-Z keeps all these lyrics in his head. He doesn't write anything down; he commits his raps to memory, leaves them buzzing around inside his cranium until they're ready to be spoken and heard. "I need a release," he says. "It's been building up for a while. I need to get it out." He is notionally retired from rapping, but I can't believe "Black Republican" will never find its way into a recording studio. "Never say never," its author says, playfully offering his 99th grin of the afternoon, then launching into a rendition of Eric B & Rakim's hip-hop classic, "Paid In Full", and dancing away from me, arms aloft, Rocky-fashion, undisputed heavyweight champion of the rooftops. His style, as on his records, is laid-back, commanding but patient, occasionally almost exasperated, as if he were a mathematician explaining a complicated equation to a small child. His sentences are punctuated by laughs, sighs, exhalations, giving them an instantly accessible, conversational tone. His phrasing - or "flow", as it's termed in hip-hop - is melodious, relaxed, apparently effortless. His wordplay thrives on the comparative and the oppositional - each line mirrors or contradicts the one that went before. "You see how I juxtapose?" he asks. His subject, as ever, is himself and his extraordinary history. Jay-Z's raps are relentlessly autobiographical. He picks at his past like a scab - the childhood in the streets, the father who left when he was 11, the failed relationships, the years selling drugs, the supernova success. Occasionally, he strives for universality: Jay-Z as ghetto Everyman; more often he's content simply to trust in the power of his specific experience. There's braggadocio, of course, but also an unprecedented sensitivity, particularly on later records such as "Song Cry", in which he dissects the break-up of a past relationship. The fictional Jay-Z - the Jiggaman, the Jay Hova - is a formidable figure for sure, but he's not without neuroses. He's no stranger to introspection. He's unafraid to admit his weaknesses. This, of course, makes him a far more compelling proposition than his your-bullets-cannot-harm-me contemporaries. As a rapper, then, he has few equals. As an icon of contemporary black culture, he has none. He's richer than 50 Cent, more beloved than Nas, more popular than OutKast, more credible than Snoop. His public image is a sort of unholy alliance of two of his mentors, allying the slick entrepreneurialism of P Diddy with the street-smart talent of Biggie Smalls. Arguably, it's this potent combination which has made him the biggest-selling rapper in pop history, with the exception of Eminem, who is, of course, white - more of which later. From our perch high above the Meatpacking District, we can almost see as far as Jay-Z's apartment, 9,000sqft and change of TriBeca real estate. The biggest living space in the city, he thinks. This is Jay-Z's town. Born Shawn Carter on 4 December 1969, the last of four children, this former drug dealer from Brooklyn's blighted Marcy Projects is hip-hop's King Of New York, CEO Of The City, Chairman Of The Board and - as he signs himself on a Polaroid for GQ's Art Director - "The Black Thomas Crown". © Simon Emmett Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Coat, Overcoat, Human, Person, Sunglasses, Accessories, Accessory, and Suit Since December and the sale of his record label, Roc-A-Fella ( Jay-Z retains the name), he's also, among other things, president of Island Def Jam - the latter having once been the most iconic label in rap - as well as co-owner of the Rocawear clothing line (with his former Roc-A-Fella partners Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke), part-owner of the New Jersey Nets basketball team and proprietor of the 40/40 Club, a swanky sports bar on West 25th Street. He has lucrative endorsement deals with Reebok and Audemars-Piguet, the luxury Swiss watchmaker. According to reports, he's worth around $350m. He's been famous in America since 1996 and his uncommonly accomplished debut album, Reasonable Doubt. Two years later, his hit single, "Hard Knock Life" - featuring a naggingly infectious sample from the musical Annie - brought him international recognition. Then, in 2001, his masterpiece, The Blueprint, perhaps the most consistently mature and cohesive hip-hop album to date, assured his status at the top of rap's mountainous pile. In 2003, he released The Black Album, the culmination of his narrative preoccupations and, apparently, his swan song. Since then, his celebrity status has been consolidated by his relationship with Beyoncé Knowles, the rump-shaking R&B beauty whose world-conquering pop hit, "Crazy In Love", was lent street credibility by her dapper beau's typically witty cameo rap. So far, so fabulous. But Jay-Z's life and career have not been without their tribulations. Most famously, in March 1997 his school friend, the New York rapper Christopher Wallace - aka Biggie Smalls or Notorious BIG - was shot dead in Los Angeles following a protracted and unsavoury war of words with his West Coast nemesis, Tupac Shakur - or 2Pac - who had been gunned down six months earlier in Las Vegas. Both murders remain unsolved, despite the best efforts of reporters, documentary film-makers and nightclub speculators, although not, if you believe many in the hip-hop community, the police. In April 2001, in an unrelated incident, Jay-Z was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (in other words, he wasn't holding the gun), after his bodyguard was discovered with a loaded Glock semiautomatic in his waistband outside a nightclub. In December of that year, he was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to the stabbing of a music executive called Lance "Un" Rivera at a party. Meanwhile, a particularly nasty public spat with rival New York rapper Nas promised to spill over into genuine unpleasantness. Violence has punctuated Jay-Z's life, starting when, aged just 12, he shot his older brother in the shoulder following a domestic dispute. Later, Jay-Z himself was shot at from close range but was miraculously unharmed. There is, to put it mildly, plenty to talk about. So the day after the GQ shoot, we continue our conversation at Fifty Seven Fifty Seven, the bar at the Four Seasons Hotel, amid the steel and concrete of midtown Manhattan. Jay, as everyone calls him, arrives without entourage, striding loose-limbed towards my table in bright white Burberry polo shirt, loose-fitting Rocawear jeans and pristine sneakers. He's wearing retro Marc Jacobs aviator sunglasses, but there's no bling - no sparkly earrings or platinum chains. The only obvious sign of wealth is his watch, another chunky Euro number, unencumbered by diamonds. In photographs, Jay-Z can look lumpen and a little glowering. In person, he's tall, rangy, skinnier than one might expect. His hair is cropped close, military-style, but he moves fluidly and his slow-burn smile and gentle eyes belie a hard-earned reputation for toughness. Over the next two hours, the most powerful, the richest and - hell, why not? - perhaps the most charming of all GQ's Men Of The Year reveals a steely sense of purpose, a thoughtful engagement with the world and even a mischievous sense of fun. "You're not very scary, are you?" I say. "I'm a mirror," says Jay-Z. "Smile into the mirror, you'll get smiles back. Throw insults into the mirror, you'll get insults back." Big smile. And we're away... GQ: Congratulations on becoming a GQ Man Of The Year. Jay-Z: Yeah, baby! That's great. It's a wonderful recognition. For a kid who grew up in Marcy Projects, to be GQ's International Man Of The Year is way past everything. You rap about life in the ghetto. Why do, say, white people in Britain like to listen to that? It's a number of things. I try to make music with emotion and integrity. And authenticity. You can feel when something's authentic, and you can feel when it's not: you know when someone's trying to make the club record, or trying to make the girl record, or trying to make the thug record. It's none of that. It's just my emotions. And sometimes they're vulnerable, like in "Song Cry" [from The Blueprint album] for example. Some people are attracted to vulnerability. From my very first album, I've been vulnerable. I've always given parts of me, parts of my life - good, bad, ugly. I've never put up this image as a super-thug. Also, some people just like the music. I'll make a song with Rick Rubin, a song with Beyoncé, a song with Lenny Kravitz. I just believe in making good music. I'm not trying to section myself off into just making hard-core rap music. © Simon Emmett Tell us what "Song Cry" is about. It's about a guy who isn't fully ready to commit, but the girl he's with, he really loves her, you know? And he wants to be with her. So what happens is, she's sick of putting up with his stuff and she finally moves on into another relationship and he's crushed. But even after all that, his pride won't allow him to cry. So you've gotta make the song cry. And the man in the song is you, right? It's a gumbo of a lot of my relationships. I use different emotions from different people or different times. You know what a gumbo is? Like a soup. You're in a relationship now. Right. We're not going to talk about that at all. Can I just confirm, though: you are stepping out with Beyoncé? It's self-explanatory. I don't talk about it. Certain things you have to keep private. But you don't keep it private on your records: "Got the hottest chick in the game/Wearing my chain". I take that to mean Beyoncé. It could mean anybody. Yeah, right. I mean, Queen Latifah's pretty hot! Why are rappers such show-offs? To be honest, it's more of a celebration than showing off. It's more like, "Yo, I got money! Oh, shit! Throw it in the air! Pour some Cristal out!" You have to realise that most of us come from nothing, like no-thing, the bottom. You start getting some success, you're gonna start celebrating it. And because you're on TV, the whole world sees you celebrating. **Early rap imagery was of urban devastation in the Bronx. Now it's all Bentleys and babes and pool parties in Miami. What happened?** It stopped being about shedding light on your situation. But for the core audience purchasing hip-hop, for the most part, it's aspirational. What does "keeping it real" mean? Don't mean shit any more. I guess it was supposed to mean being true to what you are. But it became a cliché. It really bugs me out when people away from hip-hop think "keep it real" is a cool thing to say to me. I just say, "I have no choice." Does it concern you that the media criticises rap for glamorising violence, for the imagery of someone like 50 Cent? It doesn't make black culture look good. Sometimes maybe it does glamorise violence. But it's an exaggeration to make a point. Of course, no one really lives like that every day: 50 Cent has Thanksgiving dinner with his family like everybody else, trust me. But you have to look at the root of the problem. There's something real there. How are all these guns in these neighbourhoods? How are all these drugs in these neighbourhoods? It makes me sad that all this only becomes a problem when it reaches the suburbs How annoying is it when white people start using hip-hop language, wearing hip-hop clothes, trying to be down? It depends how it's done. Look at Eminem. He grew up around the culture his whole life. He's not capitalising off the culture, in my opinion. It's what he is - those really are his friends, this really is his life. But people who just throw on a Rocawear shirt and think they're hip-hop? That's a problem. I hear posh white Londoners saying, "Holler back" when they're talking on the phone. That's what happens. They think they can say those words and take ownership of hip-hop. You can't. It's a lifestyle. It's a culture. It's not just music. It's the way you present yourself, the way you talk, it's all that. You can't just say, "Holler back" and you're in. It doesn't work like that. You're now President and CEO of Island Def Jam. Why become an executive? When you're at the forefront of hip-hop, you have a responsibility to the next generation. I just wanted our stories to end different. Most times rappers end up broke or nowhere. It's time for someone to take it to the next level, to become an executive and open the doors for the culture. In rock'n'roll, "corporate" was always a dirty word. Corporate rock is sponsored, a sellout. Why isn't "corporate" the same with hip-hop? Well, rock'n'roll is a whole different thing. A rock'n'roll act that's successful becomes uncool. In hip-hop, if you're successful, that's a good thing. Because everyone's trying to escape the ghetto, so when you do something like get an endorsement deal, people are like, "Wow. He's really doing his thing." If you're in a Pepsi commercial, it's not like you're selling out. It didn't start like that. I remember when KRS-One lent his vocals to a Sprite commercial and there was a backlash, but that was long ago. Back then, you had people like Public Enemy who were political activists, who were anti-white, anti-establishment culture. Now hip-hop seems to embrace white culture. Yeah. [Laughs] You're right! I can't even add anything on to that. Apparently, you're worth around $350m... Really? I don't know where they get these figures. I guess if you add up Rocawear and everything, you could reach those kinds of numbers. But I don't personally have $350m on me. I wish somebody would give me some of that money! I bet a good businessman like you has some idea of what he's worth. I'll pay for your lunch, put it that way. Your records are incredibly autobiographical. I don't want to say it's therapy because everyone says that, but it is. I'm not a person who has tremendous highs or lows. I don't get depressed and you'll never catch me jumping around, extra happy. And that can be dangerous to you. Sometimes I'll hold stuff in. But doing raps, I get to talk through it, I get to deal with a lot of things. When did you start rapping? Like, nine years old. I started messing with my parents' record player, I guess like all kids that got into hip-hop. And there was this guy who used to freestyle around the way. He used to rap about anything, You know, "My clothes is damp/And I like that lamp/And I am the champ," and I was like, that's fucking cool. So I started trying it. It was a gift. I guess in the beginning I really took it for granted, it came so easy. What was it like growing up in the projects? It's like crabs in a barrel. You've seen crabs trying to get out of the barrel? They pull each other down, trying to get up. They just grabbing at whatever they can. People are at the point where they're ready to do anything so it's very dangerous. And you're living in close quarters so you have to deal with danger every day, from every angle. When you were 12, you shot your brother. He was a drug addict, right? Right, but I don't want to go there again. But what happened in the projects, especially back then during Reaganomics, it was crack wars. The aroma was everywhere. It was unbelievable. I always think of that Public Enemy song, "Night Of The Living Baseheads". At night, it was like zombies walking around, very dangerous. A lot of money was being made by black kids and they was fighting over that money and then they had Uzis. Can you imagine? Semiautomatic guns? I remember a Sunday, 12 o'clock in the afternoon, these guys came through shooting Uzis, chasing after this other guy. And that was a normal thing. It destroyed plenty of lives. But I saw my brother the other day and we were able to get past it. He was able to get past his addiction and I was able to get past my stupidity. Now we're a family. You had a gun when you were 12. How come? The same way little kids get things: from their friends, from an older guy. How old were you when you became a dealer? About 16, around that age, until I was around 22. I started out as a really small guy on the street, but after a while I did OK and that made it even harder to leave. I felt like I was making even more than the rappers. I had a Lexus with TVs in the car. I felt like my life was better than theirs. You mighta had a rope chain but so did I. Was it frightening? I was never fighting over turf. I learned early on that if someone gets shot or killed, police are coming. So I tried as much as I could to avoid those types of problems. I've never caused any problems but I wasn't one to take it. You need self-respect. You need to carry yourself a certain way. I had a gun like everyone else, but I never used it. Never. Ever. But you were shot at yourself. From very close range, yes. A friend of mine, we had a misunderstanding. And at that time, all misunderstandings ended with someone getting shot. Luckily, I'm still here. Becoming a famous rapper doesn't mean you escape the violence. Biggie and Tupac both ended up dead. How did that happen? A lot of times when you get money, it don't change who you are. You don't fully escape. Unless you sever those ties, things in your past are going to keep happening. Something's gonna happen to one of your friends and then you have to do something about it. Or your friend does something to somebody... Look at the case of Pac. I didn't know Pac. We had no reason to be cross with each other but he didn't like Big, and Big was my man, so he didn't like me. I never even met him. Why haven't those murders been solved? One: because they're not police officers. If a police officer gets killed, that has to be 100 per cent solved. If it's not 100, it has to be 95. They absolutely will find the person. Two: a lot of people are reluctant to talk. It's not a cool thing to be labelled a snitch. Or maybe they're afraid to talk, afraid for their life or whatever. Couldn't someone just apologise? Everyone's watching, so ego kicks in. No one can back down, although Biggie never responded. He handled it in a great manner, better than I would have been able to do. Plus, he liked Pac. They was friends. On Pac's part, he had got shot [in an earlier incident in New York]. I don't think he really believed Big set him up, but I think he believed... Well, I heard him say this: "If you're the King Of New York, you're supposed to know when something's going down in your city." But that's really impossible. Biggie was the King Of New York as a rapper. There's a lot more dangerous guys than Biggie Smalls out there, you know what I'm saying? John Gotti was way closer to King Of New York than him. You had your own public falling out with Nas. That's different. Maybe people won't understand if we attach the thing with Nas to what we're talking about. It got a little personal but I never felt threatened. And at no time did I feel that I wanted to do something to him. Only Eminem has sold more than you. How much has that got to do with him being white? A lot. He'll tell you in 30 seconds. He said a rap about it, something really clever. He said his blue eyes are working to his benefit now. He also said that if he were black, he would have sold half as many records... A lot of people are semi-racist. That's just true. We're a minority, white people are a majority. He's relating to a wider audience. Seriously, how good are you as a rapper? Really, really good. Very gifted. Truly gifted. So why retire? It got to a point where I was making an album every year, making an album just to make an album. I never wanted to do it for that. I wanted to always be passionate about it. And the music around me wasn't inspiring. Like when Big was around, I'd listen to one of his songs and I'd be like, "That's fucking great" and I would make ten records trying to best his record. That thing you were rapping, "Black Republican". Why don't you make the record? LL [Cool J] told me something once. He was like, "God gave you a gift, man. Who are you to deny it?" That's true, but I still feel I'm inspiring people, just in another way. I'm sure I'll always create. Maybe not as fast, maybe not in a whole album, but somehow. I'm sure I'll tour again. Have you ever thought of running for office? I tell the truth too much. My past would never allow me to do that. Most politicians have never stole out their mamma's purse. I think Bush said he once stole a bag of chips. Yes, but he's lying. They're all lying. Everyone has a real story. But mine is very public. Everyone knows about it and there's no getting away from it. But I'm going to do things for the community. Every year, I take on a little more. In some ways, it's you rather than Bush who embodies the American dream. I think so. But the founding fathers probably didn't figure rap music and drug dealing as part of that journey from poverty to great power. Ha, ha! You have to cheat. You gotta use unconventional methods sometimes. I'm not trying to encourage anyone to go out there and sell drugs or anything like that. But coming where I'm from, it's not easy. The cards are definitely stacked against you. But you did it: from Marcy to Madison Square. Yeah, I did it. Anything's possible, I guess. I truly believe that.
