Fresh off the dual AMG-EQ introductions last week, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) is set for another double whammy as they're gearing up for the local launch of the facelifted 2023 Mercedes-Benz A-Class (V177) sedan along with the spicier 2023 Mercedes-AMG A45 (W177) hatchback as well.

They're revealed in a series of teasers on the company's Facebook page, though a launch date for both the regular car and the hotted-up AMG variant hasn't been specified at point of publication.

What could the update bring?

Roughly 4 years after its debut in 2018 (the V177 A-Class sedan made its way here in CBU form in October 2018, CKD came in 2021), the mid-life refresh of the A-Class sedan sees it get subtle styling tweaks, improved features, and crucially, electrification across its entire petrol engine range.

Though still unconfirmed for Malaysia, all four-cylinder petrol engines of the A-Class in other markets now feature a 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) electrical system. A 14 PS belt-driven starter-generator (RSG) now starts up the engine more smoothly and allows 'sailing' with the combustion engine switched off during steady cruising.

Power outputs are the same, and it's still routed to either a 7- or 8-speed DCT automatic as standard, depending on the variant. Power outputs of the engines relevant to our market are as follows:

• A200: (M282) 1.3-litre turbo - 163 PS, 270 Nm
• A250: (M260) 2.0-litre turbo - 224 PS, 350 Nm

As for the burlier Mercedes-AMG models, the same 14 PS RSG appears in them. The regular A45 is now no more, so the range-topper of the A-Class range is now the most powerful A45 S. The power figures are as below:

• A35: (M260) 2.0-litre turbo – 306 PS, 400 Nm
• A45 S (M139) 2.0-litre turbo – 421 PS, 500 Nm

Beyond these changes, the breadth of updates span slightly-reworked front and rear fascias, updated Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) software, and interior trim. More details relevant to our market will follow as we have it.
