What are the most expensive cars launched in 2020?

2020 is quite a challenging year but as the saying goes, the show must go on. And went on it did as Malaysia saw around 80 models launched this year.

Despite movement restrictions for almost the whole year, that is still an impressive number all things considered. But while we have a list featuring 15 of the most important cars of the year, this time, we’re going to focus on most expensive cars that were launched in 2020.

We’ll focus on 10 and some might have been sold out by the time you finish reading the article.

So, let’s jump straight into our list with the cheapest car:

Lexus LX 570 – From RM 1.225 million

Kicking things off as the cheapest in our list at RM 1.2 million is the luxurious version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. However, the Lexus LX 570 is more than just a Land Cruiser with exquisite bells and whistles.

The LX perfectly embodies what makes it unique among the competition. By combining the robustness of the 5.7-litre V8 engine (352 PS/460 Nm) and the exquisitely luxurious interior, you get the best of reliability and comfort.

Curiously enough, it is more expensive than the Mercedes-Benz GLS and the BMW X7, both of which start from well below a million ringgit.

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera – From RM 1.228 million (before tax)

For another RM 3k more, you could get a pure British thoroughbred instead of a Japanese luxury SUV. The DBS Superleggera combines the best of British with the Italian byword for super lightness.

The DBS Superleggera was launched earlier this month with an exclusive green colour paint job that is shared with the one-of-a-kind Aston Martin Victor.

Granted, that paint job bumps the price tag of the DBS Superleggera to start from RM 1.45 million. If you don’t mind settling for a less exclusive hue, the DBS Superleggera comes standard with a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine (725 PS/900 Nm) and a top speed of 340 km/h.

Lexus LC 500 – From RM 1.25 million

The revised Lexus LC 500 which was launched in June shed 10 kg but gained a RM 310k price tag from its initial launch in 2017.

No matter, because it still retained a beautiful, futuristic look. Most of the changes happen underneath with new aluminium lower suspension arms, a new high-strength coil spring material, and lighter 21-inch wheels in the rear.

Performance-wise, the revised LC 500 remained the same with a 2UR-GSE 5.0-litre V8 producing 470 PS and 540 Nm. This gave the luxury coupe a century sprint from rest in 4.4 seconds.

Lexus LC 500 Convertible – From RM 1.35 million

What if you took a look at the LC 500 and decided that what you really need is infinitely more headspace? Well, Lexus Malaysia got you (un)covered with the LC 500 Convertible.

Fully imported (CBU) from Japan, the LC 500 Convertible is powered by the same 5.0-litre V8 as its covered-up twin.

However, unlike Lexus’ past topless models, the LC 500 Convertible uses a soft-top – which is a first for Lexus. This is chosen to minimise the intrusion of boot space and takes around 15 seconds to open and around 16 seconds to close.

BMW M8 Coupe – From RM 1.453 million

Around the middle of August, BMW Malaysia pulled out all the stops to launch 4 brand-new M Performance models in a day. We’re featuring 2 of them in our list beginning with the M8 Coupe.

The M8 Coupe is obviously the flagship 2-door coupe model in BMW’s line-up. The imposingly massive and luxurious grand tourer is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 (600 PS/750 Nm) that pairs up with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

0-100 km/h is done and dusted in 3.3 seconds and top speed is limited to 250 km/h. At least the kidney grille remains controversial-free.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe – From RM 1.455 million

But what if you wanted more room in your grand tourer? Well, for around RM 2k more, you could have a bigger car with a couple of extra doors and more rear legroom.

The M8 Gran Coupe shares the same performance figures as the M8 Coupe, which means that this is a quick car with room at the back for adults.

So, if you prefer being chauffeured or even better, ferrying the family for a quick vacation with you as the driver, this might be the right car for you. Provided you have RM 1.4 million somewhere.

Ferrari 812 GTS – From RM 1.5 million (before tax)

The GTS is a legendary nameplate for the Italian Prancing Horse. Standing for Grand Turismo Spyder, the 812 GTS is the first front-engine V12 spider built by Ferrari since the 365 GTS way back in 1966.

Sadly, this tradition might be ending. The Ferrari 812 GTS is one of the last naturally-aspirated Ferrari V12 supercar with its 6.5-litre V12 making 800 PS and 718 Nm. This is linked to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Ferrari claims it will do 0-100 km/h in under 3 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h. Because of the retractable hardtop, boot volume is reduced to 210 litres compared to the 812 Superfast coupe’s 320 litres. But this is a Ferrari, it’s not meant to be practical anyway.

McLaren 765LT – From RM 1.5 million (before tax)

Imagine paying millions for a car and you don’t get creature comforts like an air-con or a radio. It might sound ridiculous, but the McLaren 765LT isn’t your average run-of-the-mill supercar.

The 765LT is an exclusive lightweight supercar that has carbon fibre for days. Oh, only 10 of these are allocated for Malaysia and they’re all sold out. Let's hope the owners can bear the Malaysian weather better than most of us.

This British brute is powered by a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 (765 PS/800 Nm) and is paired up with a 7-speed Sequential Shift Gearbox (SSG). All that lightness means it’ll do 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds.

Ferrari SF90 Stradale – From RM 1.9 million (before tax)

It might be acceptable to pay millions for a supercar only for it to not be equipped with creature comforts, but how about millions for a car with no reverse gear?

Technically, the SF90 Stradale can go in reverse but it’s aided by a pair of electric motors on the front wheels. Yes, the SF90 Stradale is also a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV).

But just because it’s a hybrid doesn’t mean it loses the Ferrari pedigree. The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and three electric motors produce a combined output of 1,000 PS and 800 Nm. It does 0-100 km/h in a blink-and-you'll-miss 2.5 seconds.

Porsche 911 Speedster – From RM 2.7 million

The price some people pay for cars can be astronomical as seen in this list, but a 2-seater Porsche 911 with a manual roof for nearly RM 3 million? You can probably buy some fancy property for that price too.

But this 911 Speedster might be the ultimate Porsche for petrolheads. It’s powered by the same 4.0-litre flat-six engine from the 911 GT3 that also costs RM 1 million less but it produces 510 PS and 470 Nm. It has 10 PS more than the GT3 thanks to revised fuel injection and new individual throttle bodies.

The real reason it’s for true-blue petrolheads lies in its 6-speed manual gearbox. Yes, manual transmissions are dying but give Porsche credit for finding a niche in a dying tradition. One that also ranks as the most expensive car launched in Malaysia in 2020.
