Who needs a pick-up when the Wuling Mini EV can float through a flood

Ever seen an ant floating around in a glass/cup, desperately trying to reach the edges to crawl out?

That’s pretty much how this Wuling Hongguang Mini EV looked trying to wade through a flood in China, much to the amusement of locals who were almost cheering the little EV to the other side of the road.

In addition to proving how light and buoyant it is (at approximately 700 kg), the video also proves how impervious the Mini EV is to floods, courtesy of its IP68 rated electric drivetrain.

Also, given its an EV with a low centre of mass, it resisted being toppled over – instead bouncing about like teeter-tot on the water. Though it seems the little EV was very lucky at times not to get washed away.

To recap, the boxy 3-door Wuling EV’s design is inspired by Japanese kei cars. Measuring in at 2,917 mm (length) x 1,493 mm (width) x 1,621 mm (height) with a wheelbase of 1,940 mm – it is roughly half the size of a Perodua Axia.

The Mini EV in the video is reportedly the latest generation model which is based on Wuling's Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform.

It's powered by a 27 PS electric motor positioned on the rear axle, top speed is rated at a casual 105 km/h.

The MINI EV is offered with two battery capacities: 13.82 kWh and 9.2 kWh. The 13.82 kWh battery offers up to 170 km driving range, while the smaller battery offers up to 120 km.

The Mini EV is also one of the most affordable EVs in China with prices ranging from CNY 28,800 to CNY 48,600 (~RM 19k to RM 32k).

The Mini EV, which has been a stellar sales success in China since it’s launch, is tipped to be introduced in Indonesia in 2022, and is already available as (left hand drive) parallel import in Thailand, priced at THB 369,000 (~RM 49k).
