The all-new 4th-generation (F70) 2024 BMW 1 Series has made its debut, a mere 4 years after introducing the third-generation (F40) model in 2019. Though deemed a new generation, the F70 1 Series is a major facelift of the outgoing F40 1 Series, bringing a fresh design, a range 48V mild-hybrid powertrains, vastly improved chassis technology and enhanced connectivity technology.

Like its predecessor, the F70 1 Series is underpinned by BMW's front-wheel-drive architecture (FAAR) platform, which is also found in the F66 MINI Cooper. 

The exterior length of the F70 BMW 1 Series has increased by 42 mm to 4,361 mm, while the wheelbase is 2,670 mm, the same as before. Elsewhere, the vehicle width is also almost identical at 1,800 mm, while the height has increased by 25 mm to 1,459 mm.

In terms of design, the F70 1 Series retains the sporty proportions typical of the model, including a long bonnet, a passenger cell set-back, and a sloping roofline.

The front end features a wide, forward-leaning radiator grille with vertical and diagonal bars, flanked by standard LED headlights. Adaptive LED matrix headlights are available as an option.

At the side, the F70 1 Series retains its wedge shape with the iconic Hofmeister-kink in the C-Pillar, now featuring a ‘Number 1’ graphic.

Round the back it features vertical reflectors and a new 2-part taillight design. The optional M Sport Package and M Sport Design equipment enhance the F70 BMW 1 Series with features like large front air intakes, pronounced side skirts, and a rear diffuser.

The top-tier BMW M135 xDrive additionally gets an M radiator grille, mirror caps, and quad exhausts.

In terms of powertrains, the F70 1 Series is offered at the outset with 2 petrol and 2 diesel engines. Crucially, the 120 (no more the 120i) is now features 3-cylinder engine and gets 48V mild-hybrid technology, alongside the 120d. Powertrain specs are itemised as follows:

• BMW 120: 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol , 170 PS, 48V mild-hybrid, 7-speed Steptronic transmission with dual clutch, FWD, 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds.
• BMW 120d: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel 163 PS, 48V mild-hybrid, 7-speed Steptronic transmission with dual clutch, FWD, 0-100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.
• BMW 118d: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel, 150 PS, 7-speed Steptronic transmission with dual clutch, FWD, 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.
• BMW M135 xDrive: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol, 300 PS, Adaptive M Chassis, all-wheel drive, 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

The F70 BMW 1 Series benefots from improved steering precision, and driving dynamics due to a more rigid body structure and an updated chassis. Enhancements include optimized suspension kinematics, preloaded anti-roll bar mounts, and new shock absorbers. A 20 percent increase in front wheel caster also improves stability and steering feedback.

Standard features include a wheel slip limitation system, integrated braking, and 17-inch light-alloy wheels (18-inch for the BMW M135 xDrive). The optional M Sport Package adds an Adaptive M Chassis, sport steering, and 18-inch wheels, with 19-inch wheels and an M sport brake system also available.

The M Technology Package offers advanced suspension, lightweight components, and 19-inch forged wheels. The M Sport Package Pro and BMW M Performance Parts are now available across all variants.

On the inside, the F70 BMW 1 Series is completely leather-free as standard. It features a fully digital display system comprising a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display.

The F70 BMW 1 Series is also equipped with BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9 (OS 9). Standard smartphone integration includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The BMW Digital Premium package, available for subscription, offers data usage for digital services, enhanced BMW Maps navigation, and in-vehicle country-specific apps for music and video streaming.

The number of buttons in the cockpit has been significantly reduced, with air conditioning controls now integrated into the infotainment system. Other interior options include sport seats with a massage function finished in recycled polyester or leather-like Veganza material and an M steering wheel.

Standard safety features include front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Exit Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, and a driver and front passenger airbag.

Optional safety systems include Steering and Lane Control Assist, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, and Parking Assistant Professional.

The F70 1 Series will also be produced at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig, with the initial market launch scheduled for October 2024, starting in Europe.
