The electric SUV was also the region’s best-seller for H1 2023
First time a BEV was the region’s best-seller over 6 months
The humble Dacia Sandero was second with the VW T-Roc third
The Volkswagen Golf was to Europe as what the Toyota Corolla was to Asia, that being the best-selling nameplate for decades. That’s all in the history books for now though as the Tesla Model Y SUV topped the charts in the continent for not only June 2023 but the first half of the year as well.
This marked the first time a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) has led car sales in Europe over a period of 6 months.
Preliminary figures from market research firm Dataforce places the Dacia Sandero compact hatchback in second spot. Dataforce figures represents about 94 percent of sales in the European Union, as well as ETFA (European Free Trade Association) countries and the U.K.
Hot on the hells of the Model Y and Sandero is the Volkswagen T-Roc compact SUV. While Sandero sales were up to 118,883 units in June, the T-Roc completed the top-3 with 107,249 units sold.
As for the Model Y’s sibling, the Model 3 sedan, it experienced higher sales growth percentage than the Model Y but could still only account for 12,693 units in June 2023.
For H1 2023, the Model 3 chalked up only 38,843 units sold, placing it a distant 50th on Europe’s best-selling list.
Combined however, the Model Y and Model 3 represented one-third of the 263,860 units increase of BEV sales, which itself was up 45 percent to 853,720 units in H1 2023.
Tesla’s been aggressively cutting prices in Europe and other major global markets such as the U.S. and China since January 2023.
“Better late than never.” Some despise it, others begrudgingly agree with it but he swears by it… much to the chagrin of everyone around him. That unfortunately stems from all of his project cars not running most of the time, which in turn is testament to his questionable decision-making skills in life. A culmination of many wrongs fortunately making a right; much like his project cars on the rare occasions they run, he’s still trying to figure out if another project car is the way to go.
