On 3 January 2021, it was reported that an elderly motorcyclist was involved in a fatal accident along Jalan Tengah near Mid Valley. Following queries of the road’s upkeep, the Public Works Department (JKR) has issued a reply that the road in question is under City Hall’s jurisdiction.
According to News Straits Times, the reply was tagged to a report by Harian Metro on the incident posted on Twitter. NST has reached out to City Hall and is still awaiting a reply.
The victim, Ho Yan Yee, was reportedly on his way to Mid Valley from Taman Connaught at about 7.30 am on Sunday when his motorcycle went over the waterlogged cavity. Ho was thrown 30 m away, dying at the scene.
Though the road was quickly patched up, the public still queried JKR about the upkeep of the road conditions prompting JKR to issue the response on Twitter. They even tagged @ITIS_TRAFIK and @DBKL2u’s Twitter profiles adding that they are extending this for further action.
JKR has been under fire since their lightning-fast reply over the Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s (KJ) bicycling incident in Banting where the minister claimed to have been thrown into a ditch after hitting a pothole.
The pothole was fixed the following day leading the public to cry foul over the double standards as the department and the local authorities’ response to potholes have left much to be desired in the past.
Meanwhile, JKR has even listed 11 ways you can make a road damage report on their Facebook page to ensure that action will be taken at the soonest.
