Hot off the confirmation that Mazda is ready to launch five SUV models starting from 2022, Mazda USA uploaded a teaser video of the first ever Mazda CX-50. The new SUV is slated to make its world debut on 15-November-2021.
The Mazda CX-50 is a five-seater SUV that will slot in on top of the popular Mazda CX-5 in the model hierarchy of SUVs. No, it will not be replacing the CX-5, at least not for the time being.
Based on Mazda’s announcement of the new range of SUVs, the CX-50 will be positioned primarily for the North American market.
But that is not to say that the CX-50 would not make it to other markets as well. For example, the Mazda CX-9 was penned with the North American market in mind but the large SUV was sold in various other countries, including Malaysia.
Assuming that the CX-50 is categorised as part of Mazda's ‘Small Group’ cars, the CX-50 will most probably either come with a SkyActiv-X, battery electric (BEV), or RE Multiple Electrification technology. The last of which could be a small rotary engine-based extender electric vehicle (EV).
From the gist of the teaser, the CX-50 will likely be an eco-friendly SUV. So perhaps a BEV or the rotary engine-based extender EV will be among the variants offered.
