In a previous report, we informed that the W206 2023 Mercedes-Benz C300 will be discontinued by the end of 2023. In its place will be the C350e plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
The W206 Mercedes-Benz C350e has a rather large 25.4-kWh battery that allows for up to 100 km of pure electric range. It also supports 50 kW DC fast charging along with 11 kW AC charging. What this means is that it can pretty much provide the full EV experience.
But at the same time, it provides a backup plan for when charging is not an option. Perhaps frequent interstate travellers who often need to make unplanned trips, or perhaps parking availability is an issue and requirement calls for the one and only car.
Regardless, itβs a rather specific demographic and not everyone will fit the bill. For those without access to home charging, we will explore the key points on why now is the best time to get the C300.
The C300 is worth the extra money over the C200
As of now, the W206 Mercedes-Benz C-Class range in Malaysia comprises the C200 Avantgarde and the C300 AMG Line, priced at RM 292,888 and RM 333,888 respectively. We think the C300 is worth the premium, partly because its AMG Line styling offers a sportier and more eye-catching exterior.
More importantly, its larger 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes it a better companion as long-distance cruiser over the 1.5-litre unit in the C200. The ability to overtake slower traffic with ease contributes to a more relaxing and enjoyable driving experience.
The C350e will not be cheap
As we reflect on the prices of the W205 C350e in 2017, which ranged from RM 289,888 to RM 299,888, the expected inflation and currency fluctuations could potentially push the W206 C350e's price above the C300βs RM 333k.
PHEV lifestyle may not suit everyone
The C350e PHEV may not be the ideal choice for everyone as some potential buyers do not have convenient access to home charging facilities, which is essential for maximising the PHEV's efficiency and benefits.
Without regular charging, the hybrid system's batteries become additional weight, diminishing the car's overall performance and fuel economy.
Worries about hybrid battery replacement costs
While the vehicle typically comes with a warranty for the hybrid battery, one cannot escape the lingering concern of potential battery replacement costs in the future and the potential expense of replacement can be a point of apprehension for buyers.
Conclusion
The present juncture presents an opportunity for those considering a W206 2023 Mercedes-Benz C300. Compared to the C200, the C300 with its AMG Line styling and a more powerful engine stands as the more desirable choice.
The incoming C350e PHEV will undoubtedly offer more performance and the allure of electrification, but the consistent charging lifestyle may not suit everyone.
For buyers seeking a straightforward luxury driving experience and have no access to home charging, the C300 stands out as the perfect solution. And the perfect solution might not be available come 2024, so grab it while it's available.
For those who are already ready for full electrification, thereβs the EQ range, starting from the EQA.
