Scoop: Nissan GT-R (R35) could say goodbye with 1,500 final edition units in 2025

When the R35 Nissan GT-R was unveiled, it was the year the first iPhone was introduced, Malaysia was one of the co-hosts of the Asian Cup and exited the first round, while the country sent its first angkasawan.

17 years later, the iPhone is in its 17th generation, Malaysia qualified and exited the Asian Cup in the first round, and the first angkasawan is a snake oil salesman, while the R35 is still in production.

Though it is still a marvel in performance, age is catching up and the R35’s twin-turbo V6 petrol engine is seen as a polluting dinosaur in an age of electrification. It underwent a facelift in 2023, available only in Japan and the United States.

Like the Proton Exora, the GT-R’s time will eventually come and according to Japanese media, the R35’s final days are rumoured to be approaching soon. Mag X reported that 1,500 units are planned to be built in 2025 which will serve as the last batch of the modern-day Godzilla for the road.

Despite the age, there are still buyers who remain interested in the R35 and Nissan has stopped taking orders for the 2024 model according to its Japanese website. It stated, “the number of orders has reached the planned sales volume”.

The R35 GT-R is priced from JPY 13.75 million (~RM 436k) and is available in Premium Edition, Premium Edition T-Spec, and Nismo variants. Of the 1,500 units of the rumoured final edition, 300 units are reported to be the Nismo variant according to Mag X.

With the R35 rumoured to be reaching the end of production next year, will we see the GT-R name being retired or could it evolve in this electrified age? There have been a myriad of speculations from Japanese media from a possible mild-hybrid R36 successor to a potential fully-electric 4-door Taycan fighter bearing the GT-R badge.

Nissan showcased the Hyper Force Concept at last year’s inaugural Tokyo Mobility Show with many speculating an all-electric continuation of the GT-R sports car for the future. Either way, it might be finally time we bow down to the R35 after 17 long years.
