If you have a budget of around RM 200k for an EV, the current de facto choice would be a Tesla. But which one, the Tesla Model 3 or Model Y? The sleeker sedan or its slightly larger sibling, the SUV?
In this comparison, we'll delve into the key aspects of both models to help you decide based on your preferences and needs.
When it comes to affordability, the Model 3 has the edge. With a starting price of RM 189,000 for the Standard Range RWD, itβs a tad cheaper than the Model Y, which kicks off at RM 199,000 for the Standard Range RWD.
However, the price difference becomes more pronounced as we move up the range, with the Model Y's Long Range AWD variant goes up to RM 246,000 compared to the Model 3 Long Range AWD at RM 218,000.
Speaking of performance, both models bring their A-game. The Model Y, with its base single-motor configuration, offers a respectable 347 PS and 420 Nm of torque, reaching 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.
The AWD Long Range variant steps it up with dual motors, boasting 514 PS/493 Nm and a 0-100 km/h time of 5.0 seconds. Meanwhile, the top-tier Model Y Performance delivers 534 PS/660 Nm, hitting 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.
Comparatively, the Model 3 Standard Range RWD offers 283 PS/420 Nm, which allows a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.1 seconds. The Long Range AWD variant makes 498 PS/ 493 Nm and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, thanks to its dual-motor setup.
Winner: Tesla Model Y
Which one goes further on a single charge?
When it comes to range, the Model 3 stands out with 513 km for the Standard Range and 629 km for the Long Range on the WLTP cycle.
In contrast, the Model Y offers 430 km for the Standard Range and 533 km for the Long Range. This is attributed to the difference in body size and shape, as SUVs weigh more and are less aerodynamically efficient.
Both models boast an LFP battery with a capacity of 57.5 kWh for the Standard Range variant, and 75 kWh (NMC) for the Long Range and Performance variants.
Both models support up to 11 kW for AC charging, and the AWD Long Range and Performance variants support up to 250 kW for DC charging, while the Standard Range variants goes up to 170 kW.
Winner: Tesla Model 3
Which has the latest and greatest features?
The Model 3 was launched in Malaysia as the facelifted model right from the get-go, giving it a fresher appeal compared to the Model Y.
The updated Model 3 has a quieter cabin, updated materials, and a revised dashboard with LED lighting. It introduces features like ventilated seats and an eight-inch rear cabin screen for an enhanced passenger experience.
These upgrades are yet to grace the Model Y, which is expected to receive its facelift, codenamed Juniper, in the second half of 2024.
That being said, both have plenty of unique features like Camp Mode, which lets users power electronics via USB ports, control cabin temperature, and stay entertained with an active touchscreen for music, internet, games, and videos.
Media and climate settings are manageable through a paired phone, making it ideal for vehicle stays, like camping or with a child. There's also the much-talked-about light show.
Winner: Tesla Model 3
Which drives better?
As a sedan, the Model 3 has the upper hand when it comes to handling and nimble driving dynamics. Its lower center of gravity contributes to a sportier feel on the road, which keener drivers will enjoy.
The Model Y with its SUV design results in a slightly different driving experience, with more mass and body movements to deal with. But the Model Y does offer a more commanding view of the road.
Winner: Tesla Model 3
The most important factor: Practicality
The decision between the Model 3 and Model Y should ultimately hinge on practical considerations. For families or those seeking more space, the Model Y offers a roomier interior and larger boot space, making it a preferable choice.
While the Model 3βs cabin is spacious for a sedan, the rear headroom might be limited for taller passengers and the low rear seats results in a slightly crouched-like seating position, which compromises thigh support.
The Model Y provides a more spacious interior with increased headroom in the rear, plus a more comfortable seating position. The rear seats can also be folded down to create a flat cargo space, making it more versatile for hauling larger items.
Winner: Tesla Model Y
Conclusion
As always, choosing between the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y ultimately comes down to your individual preferences and needs.
If you prioritise a compact, sleeker-looking sedan with nimbler driving dynamics and longer range, the Model 3 is a compelling choice. Not forgetting that with its facelifted features, the Model 3 provides a more refined driving experience.
On the other hand, if you require more space for passengers and cargo, the Model Y's SUV design provides added versatility.
