Neta primarily produces battery electric vehicles (BEV) but its upcoming model will be launched with a combustion engine. Still, the engine that will be powering the Neta L, which will make its Chinese debut on 20 April isn’t going to be powering the car per se.
That’s because the 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine under the hood of this SUV will work as a range extender for the electric motor (EREV).
According to preliminary information by Chinese automotive analyst, Tycho de Feijter on his Twitter (currently known as X), the EREV will see the front-mounted 231 PS electric motor aided by a 91 PS naturally aspirated 1.5-litre unit.

Top speed is 180 km/h while the car is juiced up by a 40.27-kWh LFP battery produced by CATL. Neta claims the L has an EV-only range of 310 km, one of the highest range for a Chinese EREV.
The Neta L is not the first Neta EREV model as the Neta S sedan is also available with a 1.5-litre engine acting as a range extender. It also claims to have an EV-only range of 310 km (NEDC).
Still, the Neta L will also be offered with a BEV option though the EREV version will be launched first on Saturday. The electric-only version is powered by a single 231 PS electric motor on the front axle though battery size and range are still unknown.

Built on Neta’s Shanhai 2.0 platform, the Neta L is closer to the Proton X90 in terms of dimensions as seen in the table above. Unlike the Neta V which remains the sole Neta model in Malaysia, the Neta L looks more grown up but retains the sporty looks of the Neta S and Neta GT.
The interior is the one that attracts the most attention with a twin 15.6-inch display that stretches from the middle to the front passenger side. I know there are concerns on how the airbags will be deployed in the event of an accident but maybe Neta is simply adhering to the demands of its customers.
Set for launch on 20 April, the Neta L EREV could start from around CNY 150,000 (~RM 99k). In Malaysia, only the Neta V is available here as one of the cheapest BEVs in the country at RM 100,000 on-the-road, without insurance.
