Chery is in talks to license its battery EV platform to European brands, including one brand from the premium segment, confirms Chery’s chairman Yin Tongyue.

"Two premium European marques want to use our platform and a deal will be signed with one of them, a more premium brand than us," Yin told Reuters.

Yin said this during a livestream event for the Exeed Exlantix ET’s pre-sales in China.

Marketed under Chery’s upscale Exeed brand, specifications of the Exlantix ET have yet to be announced but Chery says the all-wheel drive battery EV will deliver over 500 PS of power. It will be powered by CATL’s Shenxing LFP battery, which Chery says can add 400 km of driving range with just 10 minutes of DC fast charging.

An E-REV variant will join later. E-REVs, or extended range electric vehicles are plug-in hybrids that use its combustion engine solely as a generator.

Chery is a local partner for the Tata-owned Jaguar and Land Rover brands in China.

As the Chinese car market progresses on an increasingly diverging path from Europe, with unique needs, especially on infotainment features and software, more European brands are licensing platforms from Chinese automakers.

VW has entered a partnership with XPeng, Stellantis with Leapmotor, and of course, the Geely-owned Volvo’s ties with Zeekr.
