How much will it cost to convert a 2009 Toyota Sienna into a 4x4 vehicle?

It wouldn’t be seriously expensive compared to other custom car projects, but why bother when you can just trade that one in and simply buy an AWD Sienna? If you really want to though, You could find a wrecked AWD sienna, take all the components out that run the rear driveline, including the transmission, center differential, driveshaft, rear differential, rear subframe, rear hubs and axles and probably have someone install all that stuff into your existing van. You would probably need the ECU from the AWD version as well as the engine and transmission harness to make everything work properly. Of course this is assuming Toyota made an AWD version of the Sienna in 09. They do now, but I don’t know about the 09’s. If they didn’t, you’re looking at a lot more work and money trying to get new stuff to fit and work in an older van. It wouldn’t be worth it in that case. You’re looking probably $5k when it’s all said and done if you can use a donor vehicle the same vintage as yours. Double or even triple that if there were no AWD versions in 09.

Should I buy a truck, van, or SUV?

I drive an AWD Toyota Previa minivan on my rock climbing road trips. I’ve ‘lived’ in the van for a month or more at a time. Advantages: good gas mileage (it’s a supercharged 4-cylinder) great comfort for sleeping - with a bed set up in back Cons: take out bed to transport more people My bed is installed so that I can remove it and replace the seats in about a half hour. Since My son grew up and went to college, 2 seats is fine on trips by myself with a climbing partner. I can’t cook in it ( easily). But then, you wouldn’t cook in a truck or SUV either. cooking in the back of my Previa minivan Several of us cooking in back of my van, Squamish, BC The wood platform has piano hinges and folds down with a ery comfy bed on top. Another con: they don’t make this particular minivan any more. Pro: Alex Honnold lives full time in his van, equipped with solar cells on the roof for better lighting.

What 4x4 or AWD camper van would you recommend?

I currently drive a 1995 Toyota Previa minivan, which I bought new in 1995, and it’s AWD. I can sleep in it comfortably and have done numerous road trips of 1 - 2 months to Squamish, Canada, all over Colorado, climbing in Utah (Moab, St. George, Maple Canyon), and California. However - they don’t make them any more. MIne is getting older, and having mechanical problems. I’d love to replace it with a new Previa. The Toyota Sienna is also an AWD minivan, but it’s not as tall, so there’s less headroom when camping. Cooking in the back of my minivan (the bed platform folds up and down). Previa “kitchen” . Bed’s made when it folds down. The van, at Squamish.

Why is the Toyota Sienna Limited $7000 more than the non-Limited versions?

There's a big, big gap between the base model "L" and the "everything but the kitchen sink" Limited. L. LE. SE. XLE. Limited. The L is the base van, everything you'd expect in a van, but nothing extra or fancy. The LE is like the L, but with "extras". Most of which are things that you'd really, really prefer to have, which de facto makes the LE the base model. The SE is the "sporty" version - the options swapped from the LE are performance oriented (insofar as "performance oriented" intersects with "minivan"). 19" rims, for instance, only appear on the SE. The XLE is like the EXL in Honda-speak. It's the LE, with leather, and a pile more additive features, mostly in the electronics and infotainment areas. The Limited is like the Touring in Honda-speak. It's got literally everything you can add to the van, or rather, the super-set of the most "luxe" and "performant" things that can be added which are available. Only XLE and Limited have AWD available (the only AWD on a minivan in North America, to my knowledge). In general, adding leather adds about $1500. Adding rear entertainment adds between $2k and $3k. Adding rear air conditioning adds about $1k. Replacing color matched side rearview mirrors with Color-keyed heated power auto-dimming outside mirrors with turn signal and blind spot warning indicators,29 Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA),43 puddle lights and power-folding, reverse tilt-down and memory features probably adds $1k (yeah, I copied that straight from the Toyota site). It all adds up. You'll find that you probably really DO want the Limited, even at the higher price, and that you'll want the AWD (I would) and the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and the HID headlights (at which point you might as well move to the Limited Premium). If you add the Blu-Ray rear infotainment center, you're going to be better off with the Limited Premium as it's standard. I walked into a Honda dealer in 2007 looking for a used Pilot because my wife wasn't comfortable with the price point ($63k) on the Mercedes GL450 that I'd been looking at. We drove off the lot with $54k worth of Odyssey Touring instead. Your mileage may vary. P.S. Have a hard look at the Ford Transit Connect Wagon Titanium. It's on the top of my "replace the CR-V with this" list. Maxed out it's about $34k. Delete the panoramic sunroof (I would), drops to $31.5k.

What are biggest mistakes people make while shopping for a car?

Buying the wrong car, even after I have sat with them for a while, asking them about their current car, why they are trading it in, what they plan on using the car for, if they have had, or expect any changes in their lifestyle etc. These are the three major categories I ask people about when they are buying a car, they are Needs, Wants and Lifestyle. It is very important that as a buyer you make three columns on a piece of paper and actually fill in the blanks. Then in a few weeks, or even a few days, they are back at the dealership, or on the phone with me, crying about how their new car doesn’t fit in their family needs. They want to simply return the vehicle and get into another one and drive away. They don’t realize that they are the proud owner of the vehicle they took home, and there is going to be some depreciation since the car is not new any longer, and I can not reverse that situation. Case in point, I had a young lady come in and trade in her Toyota Sienna AWD, for a Sienna FWD, because in the FWD, you get one more seat, and she was car pooling, and one of the other families now had one of their children get a year older and start going to school. So she was convinced that she needed a van with one more seat in it to accommodate the additional child. I asked her why they bought the AWD in the first place, and she told me that they like to go skiing a lot, plus it is nice to have when it rains heavily, or mainly snows. I asked if they have another family sized vehicle that they can use for skiing, and she said they have a BMW 5 Series that is AWD, but hard to get all of them and their gear to the slopes, but they would figure something out. What she didn’t tell me is that they lived in a house on lake front property, and in Washington, it gets cold enough to freeze the water, as well as it snows in that area. Her house was a few feet lower than the main street, so there was a pretty steep grade up. It snowed a few days later, and she was not able to get out of her driveway. She called me instantly, crying about the situation, so I went to her house and of course, there wasn’t any way to get the van up the hill without a wrecker, or waiting for the Sun. So she waited for the Sun so melt the snow so she could get out of her driveway. Later that afternoon, she called me again, asking if there was anything I could do, and I told her the truth, that she would lose a few thousand dollars on the trade in. I knew her husband, and he too was a little miffed about the situation, but understood finances. So she came in that evening and traded in her new Sienna in on a new Sienna AWD, Limited of course and wrote a check for the difference. Now, these people were well off enough to be able to have this happen and now have it affect them in a financial sense. However, I have also had a crap ton of other situations where the client comes in, says they want a specific vehicle, and no matter how many questions I ask, answers they give or how many times we look at their situation on paper that shows they should buy a completely different vehicle, they still buy the original vehicle they came in for. And of course, in a few weeks, they are calling me up, telling me that the car will not work for their lifestyle/situation, and can’t do anything about it except trade it in and jack up their payments, or they can’t afford to trade it in and are stuck with it for at least 18–24 months while the lack of equity situation settles down a bit. You know, things like, “It won’t fit in my garage” (after I specifically asked for the measurements of their garage or driveway) or “The car is too low and my drive is too steep and I scrap the front or belly of the vehicle” (again, after I ask specifically about going from a higher SUV to a lower sedan or sports car). The best is when a younger girl comes in, driving a sedan, and “absolutely must, must, must” have a full sized SUV because she is having her first or even second baby, and none of the baby’s stuff will fit in the car. (But in reality, they just need to learn how to drive around with less crap in their trunk) Only to hear them a little while later saying that the FS SUV is too big for them to drive around town or park, or that they didn’t realize the FS truck would burn more fuel etc. Again, even though I had sat down with them and asked countless times about their situation and what changed, and then not only told them, but showed them how the vehicle they were looking at did not really work for them, and that once they drive away with the car, it is theirs. Now, I can tell you that I have had more people come in, sit with me and answer the questions and realize that they were mistaken or not aware of the outcome of the type of vehicle they were looking at, and went in a completely different direction and are loving their new cars. And people always ask why we still need salesmen.

Do any cargo vans come stock with either 4x4 or AWD?

Multivan, VW Daily, Iveco Hiace, Toyota (optional on JDM and Thai version ) NV200, Nissan (optional on JDM ) Delica D:3, Mitsubishi

Would you buy a Tesla Model 3 over a Toyota Camry?

NEITHER. The passenger sedan is falling out of favor with the American buying public. Replacing them are Ute’s (SUV’s and cross overs), vans, pickup trucks. Why? George Carlin said it best, people are attached to their stuff, and want to carry their stuff with them. All you can carry (easily) in a passenger car is people. So, resale value (trade in value) of sedans are going to drop in the out years. Now would i buy an all electric vehicle? No. Why? Range. A base tesla 3 gets 220 miles, med range 260 miles, long range 310 miles. The long range Tesla 3 is a $9000 option for a bigger battery pack. $9000!!!!……THAT BUYS ALOT OF GAS FOR A 25 MPG TOYOTA AWD RAV4!! Range of the RAV4 is 360 miles with 1 gal left in tank. Fillup anywhere, 10 minutes. Tesla advises quick charge’s, battery pack swapouts are coming, but still much longer to do than a 10 minute gas fillup. Tesla is remarkably silent on how cold weather (us currently in a deep freeze) affects battery life range; but some users are reporting a 42% decrease in range in cold weather. They say an aircraft carrier captain starts worrying about refueling when his tanks are still 80% full. That’s the way i would feel if i was driving an EV; starting to locate the next charging station within the cars reported range, and wondering if the remaining charge gauge was reading true in cold weather. I don’t need that hassle (AND extra cost EV purchase price!) when gas stations are plentiful, the RAV fuel economy is frugal, and the GAS BUDDY app always finds me the cheapest gas in the area.

Is it ever worth it fixing a car when the repair costs are more than what the car is worth?

Yes, depending upon many factors it can be a good choice, “it is often better to live with the devil you know then to choose a different devil.” If you have a nice car and have been doing the maintenance and repairs and it now needs a serious repair, it will be worth doing unless someone has a better vehicle in great shape for a good price. How long will it take you to find a good used car, have it checked out. You will have in California to pay transfer and taxes, about 10% of the cost of the new car, plus all of the good work and parts that you put into the other car are now lost and you have to sell it for a fraction of the good parts. Maybe you would be better off if you bought a donor car and got the parts you need. Myself I like Ford Aerostars, I looked for a low mileage 1996 model in great shape, it took 2 years to find one that met my specifications. It was a 1996 Ford Aerostar 4.0L AWD with factory tow package (limited slip rear end) in show room condition with less than 30k miles, it now has almost 60K and I have spent almost as much in upgrades and repairs as it cost. Blue book value is a fraction of what I have invested. yet a replacement mini van with AWD would cost $40,000 and still get the same fuel mileage. Yet the cost of registration and insurance would cost thousands more every year. So while I could spend $40,000 plus thousands of dollars for insurance and registration annually or spend the same or less for the Aerostar annually. And the Aerostar is really comfortable and parts are inexpensive. So I drive a really nice older vehicle. I recall my surprise when asked outside of Costco was this a new vehicle, as they did not recognize it. I have upgraded the wheels and suspension, plus have running boards. It is still close to show room condition and drives great. I love it. So unless it was totaled due to an accident that damaged the uni body I will keep fixing it. Far cheaper then any alternatives that fit my needs. Heck if you gave me the $40K Toyota AWD Sienna for free, it would be cheaper for me to drive the old Ford. Choose Wisely!
