ECU OR ECM , these units vary from models and years but most have many functions and communicate with many other modules by a bus system of wiring , whereby many models use the same common wires from information travel. These units can have part or all function control in one unit and a single sensor can support many operations , like; wheel sensors supports ABS, transmission shifting, Cruise control. Outside temperature sensor controlling driver information, air conditioner compressor, freeze warning , engine fans. I hope this is helpful.
Older cruise controls are entirely hardware-based. From the 1960s until about 2002, they were based on mechanical links between the throttle and the speedometer. Since 2002, they have shifted to a software implementation, but they still need to affect the hardware of the car, so servomotors and their controllers are still needed.
It is far easier to just buy an after market cruise control and fit it. I have seen them around for less than $200 and they are relatively simple DIY jobs. Sometimes you can be lucky, and the ECU on a non cruise control car will be exactly the same and for the cruise control one, and all you need to do is fit all the hardware for it to work You might like to check out that option.
A Genuinely Interesting Question -because Non-Zero Constant Speed means how to ride at the same velocity, and ,I am assuming that you mean without-cruise control. Before we bash-about saying “use cruise control” please understand that cruise control is not a very common component of the motorcycle, and implementing it on the motorcycle is almost always not possible with ease. What cruise control does is maintain the same speed - very easy to say- ,but what it does, in order to maintain the same speed is complex and beautiful. What Cruise Control really does: Travelling at a said non-zero velocity requires an amount of energy expenditure (,KE + WindResistance+RollingResistance + Potential Energy,) KE will remain constant ,a given speed But Wind Resistance+Rolling Resistance is going to differ ,depending on whether it is headwind, or tail wind. And the Terrain, respectively. And ,PE, is going to change depending on whether we are climbing up or down. These factors together will need to be determined what amount of Fuel must be supplied to keep the vehicle in motion at the same speed. These factors are then translated to ,Throttle Input ,which the ECU feeds to the fuel pump. For this complex system to work, ,there is a very important requirement. ,Conventionally, throttle is through a throttle cable, that either opens the carb’s or fuel pump’s operation. But importantly the ,Throttle Input, described above, has to a digital signal so that it can be precisely modulated for a smooth ride without loading and unloading the transmission (red flag which will damage transmission/gear/chain aka the entire power train) THAAAAT MEANS: ,Your motorcycle needs to have a ride by wire for it to produce a throttle input that is digital. So how do we achieve this? without a Cruise Control? TLDR,: No we can not achieve the electronic precision of a close looped system like cruise control by just mechanical input. But, you can definitely achieve the next best thing - almost constant velocity. For a given Velocity, at a Given Gear - ,RPM ,is almost always the same while Riding in Same Wind Conditions and Same Terrain. Therefore, try to keep the RPM as constant as possible, and depending on change in terrain and wind, slightly modify it as required. Should you ride in constant velocity? - Will this damage the Engine -? ,No you should not and it will damage the engine. I will be writing a short article about it in my blog on why, so, do jump ,One Heart - Two Wheels, ,to be in loop when it is out. Or do PM me on ,FB:,One Heart 2 Wheels, ,and I will share the short version of it. Thanks to ,Aryan Agarwal, for the A2A
Adaptive cruise control is a radar that goes in the front of a car and is used to create a cruise control based on the flow of traffic in front of the car. This tech is about 10 yrs old and can be bought off the shelf. To implement it you need to have access to the ecu and that requires vehicle integration. This will still be the case in 5 yrs.
ECU for an adaptive cruise control and for an engine management system. The simulation model allows processing of various sensors data like engine speed, engine temperature, and distance from the front vehicle. ECU provides safety to the user by avoiding the collision by using IR Sensor and deployment of the air bags using MEMS accelerator in the case of emergency using adaptive cruise control. ECU controls the vehicle speed by using electronic fuel injector actuator.
There's always a chance of failure in machines, so yes it's possible ! However the cars equipped with Cruise control are generally higher end cars which obviously don't have a compromised quality. However, if you are interested to know the reasons and possibilities of failure, it requires a basic understanding of how cruise control works? .. In cruise control, the throttle is controlled by the ECU which stabilizes the speed by the help of the piston which is detects the acceleration by applied pressure or pressure required on the accelerator pedal. So possible reasons for failure can be: 1) ECU actuator failure (VERY Very RARE !) 2) Cable breakage 3) Cruise control is aborted by brake, therefore the car can remain in perpetual cruising mode in case of brake failure also.
The brain box of a car is: The engine ECU. The transmission ECU. The SRS ECU. The entertainment ECU. The EBS controller ECU. Some vehicles may have parts of functions shared or some functions combined. There is some intercommunication between the systems eg The ECU needs to know when you have pressed the brake pedal while on cruise control and the SRS system needs to know if this is an emergency stop by getting feedback from the EBS. Most people associate the engine ECU as the brainbox but really it is a collaboration between the various ECU's.
