Chery Malaysia has confirmed that it will be launching the 5-seater, C-segment Chery Tiggo 7 Pro in the second quarter of this year. When launched, its closest rival will be the Proton X70, with a similarly competitive price.
In South Africa, which is one of Chery’s biggest right-hand drive markets, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is 16% cheaper than the Proton X70! Although Chery doesn’t enjoy national car privileges like Proton, the similar segment Chery Omoda 5’s price already provides a very good indication of what to expect.
The 1.5-litre turbocharged Omoda 5 starts at RM 108,800 in Malaysia for the entry C variant and RM 118,800 for the H variant. Additionally, the Omoda 5 features a smaller 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (156 hp / 230 Nm), compared to the Tiggo 7 Pro’s 1.6-litre turbocharged unit (197 hp / 290 Nm), suggesting that the Tiggo 7 Pro will be slightly more expensive.
A circa RM 130k price seems fair for the Tiggo 7 Pro.
For comparison, the Proton 1.5-litre turbocharged Proton X70 sells for between RM 98,800 to RM 116,800, while the 1.8-litre turbocharged variant sells for RM 123,800.
If you are wondering how the C-segment Chery Tiggo 7 Pro will co-exist with the equally C-segment Omoda 5; well Chery treats Omoda as a separate brand. It’s a very Chinese smartphone-style of branding. Think Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, Realme.
Chery sees the Omoda 5 as a more flamboyant, youth-oriented SUV while the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is aimed at more traditional, family-focused buyers.
The Malaysian market Tiggo 7 Pro’s 1.6-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (197 hp / 290 Nm) will be paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is confirmed for Malaysia, as are a full suite of advanced driver assistance (ADAS) functions and panoramic sunroof.
The infotainment system also one-ups the Proton X70, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an 8-speaker Sony audio system. There’s also an all-around 360-degree parking camera; interestingly, it is ambitiously referred to as a 540-degree camera.
Like the Chery Omoda 5, the Tiggo 7 Pro will be locally assembled (CKD) at Inokom plant in Kulim.
The second half of 2024 will also see Chery Malaysia launching its Proton X50-rivalling, possibly sub-RM 100k Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.
