The W214-generation 2024 Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ has been unveiled, positioned beneath the forthcoming E63 performance flagship.

Let’s start with performance, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) setup consists of a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine producing 449 PS and an electric motor generating 163 PS. This electric motor is integrated into the 9-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

Together, they deliver a combined output of 585 PS and 750 Nm, distributing power to all four wheels via the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. Opting for the AMG Dynamic Plus Package unleashes a total of 612 PS when activating the Race Start mode of the launch control. For context, the W213-generation E63S with its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 makes 612 PS/850 Nm.

This translates into a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.8 seconds. The package also eliminates the standard 250 km/h speed limiter, allowing the E53 to reach a top speed of 280 km/h.

Being a PHEV means the E53 can be driven on purely electric power. The 21.2 kWh (usable) battery allows up to 100 km range in the WTLP cycle. The onboard charger accepts up to 11 kW AC charging, while an optional 60 kW DC fast charging. The regenerative braking system is capable of topping up the battery at rates of up to 120 kW.

In terms of handling and dynamics, the E53 benefits from additional bracing on the front and rear axles to improve stiffness and widened front wheel arches to accommodate a broader track. The twin-chamber suspension dampers offer various settings ranging from Comfort to Sport Plus, and the rear-axle steering is said to enhance both agility and stability.

Externally, the E53 features an illuminated AMG-specific grille, flared front wheel arches, enlarged air intakes, and quad exhausts, to highlight its performance-oriented nature. Depending on market availability, buyers are able to option larger alloy wheels (up to 21-inch), and carbon fibre or black chrome exterior packages.

Inside, it gets body-hugging performance seats, bespoke wood trim, and AMG steering wheel. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the 14.4-inch infotainment display combo comes as standard, while the full-width Superscreen is available as an option.
