CATL, CALB, SVOLT, and more, keen on setting up EV battery plant in Thailand by 2026 01

Foreign investors are expected to establish a plant in Thailand to produce battery cells intended for electric vehicles (EVs) within the next two years, reports Bangkok Post.

Narit Therdsteerasukdi, the secretary-general of Thailand’s Board of Investment (BoI), disclosed that the roadshow, held in Fujian and Guangdong from 7- to 10-April, showcased promotional incentives for Chinese EV battery manufacturers.

Among the interested parties were prominent names such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), China Aviation Lithium Battery (CALB), Inpow Battery Technology (IBT), Eve Energy, Gotion High-tech, Sunwoda, and SVOLT Energy Technology.

Expressing keen interest in Thailand's investment landscape, these companies were particularly attracted to BoI's new promotional privileges tailored to produce battery cells for EVs and energy storage systems, Narit noted.

Narit projected that this year, at least two major manufacturers would firm up their plans to establish battery cell production facilities in Thailand, with an estimated total investment of around 30 billion baht. Each manufacturer is expected to commence operations with an annual production capacity ranging from 6-10 gigawatt hours.

To enhance competitiveness, BoI extends incentives such as corporate income tax waivers, exemptions on tariffs for imported machinery and raw materials, as well as financial support.

Several other companies are either in talks with Thai partners or in the process of expanding their feasibility studies. Initially planning to focus solely on battery modules and packs, these companies have shown renewed interest in the latest promotional incentives provided by BoI.

"I believe that within two years, Thailand will witness the establishment of a large-scale battery cell factory. This milestone will further fortify the supply chain and lay a robust foundation for the long-term growth of the electric vehicle industry in Thailand," remarked Narit.
