Just yesterday, Lexus debuted its smallest crossover yet, the Lexus LBX. Global markets, including Europe, Japan and other selected markets will receive the LBX from Q4 2023 onwards.

Underpinning the Lexus LBX is the GA-B platform, similar to the TNGA-B-based Yaris Cross. Despite sharing the similar platform, the Lexus LBX has a 2,580 mm long wheelbase, whereas the Yaris Cross’ is 20 mm shorter at 2,560 mm.

The Lexus LBX’s entry-level positioning is also reflected in the suspension configuration, as it’s the first-ever Lexus to offer a torsion beam rear suspension configuration. For variants fitted with the AWD system, they get a trailing arm-type 2-link double wishbone rear suspension that houses the rear motor.

Yes, rear motor, as all variants of the Lexus LBX features a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine (M15A-FXE) mated to an electric motor and high-output bipolar NiMH battery pack. AWD variants add the aforementioned rear motor.

Visually, Lexus’ smallest crossover embodies the Unified Spindle front grille, much like the all-new Lexus RX. In order to match the LBX’s compact dimensions, Lexus gave the model bulbous-shaped headlights.

Towards the rear of the LBX, it gets a full-width LED tail light much like its larger siblings, albeit with curves that matches the headlights.

Being a Lexus, the LBX’s interior embodies the Tazuna Concept and is par for the course – there’s the usual Lexus switchgear, including buttons and stalks that you’ll normally find in larger Lexus models, as well as a massive 9.8-inch infotainment display.

Safety is kept in check with the Lexus Safety System+ ADAS suite, which includes features like Pre-Crash Safety (PCS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with all-speed follow function, Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Abnormal Driver Response System.

Our aim was to create a vehicle that enabled the discerning customer to enjoy a relaxing drive and be their true selves. We strove to create an exciting vehicle that would give the everlasting desire to stay behind the wheel the moment they sat in the driver’s seat - a deep sense of connection between driver and car that begins the moment the accelerator pedal is depressed.”

Closer to home, it remains to be seen if the Lexus LBX will be offered here. At the time of writing, the most afforable Lexus model is the Lexus UX, priced from RM 250,688.
