2021 is set to be a busy year for BMW Malaysia. Following our earlier news that the BMW X3 sDrive20i could be launched soon, it seems that there will be another model being prepped for a Malaysian launch, this time the G12 BMW 740Le xDrive M Sport plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Again, this seems a long time coming, because the G12 7-series has been with us a long time, and never got the M Sport treatment. The question is, why not? To our observation, most M Sport variants of BMW models have been rather well-received here. Our neighbours in Thailand has had the 745Le M Sport for awhile now. This is low-hanging fruit, that BMW Malaysia somehow missed.
According to sources, the 740Le M Sport will make its debut here sometime in April. For some odd reason (which we don't know), Malaysia is the only country that still calls this 3.0-litre 6-cylinder PHEV 7 Series the 740Le. Everywhere else, you'd be calling this car a BMW 745Le. It might have something to do with tax incentives because the previous 740Le uses a 2.0-litre engine while the 745Le uses a 3.0-litre engine.
To recap, the regular 740Le xDrive PHEV is powered by a 3.0-litre, six cylinder engine, combined with an electric motor (total output394 PS, 600 Nm) that drives through the ubiquitious ZF 8-speed automatic. We don't expect any changes in this department. Currently, the outgoing non-M Sport model retails for RM 569,052 (on the road without insurance, with SST discount).
