One more option for Malaysians, TNB and Petronas to advance feasibility studies of hydrogen tech here 01

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Petronas have signed a definitive Joint Feasibility Study Agreement (JFSA) in Malaysia to advance the studies of local hydrogen business development.

This agreement builds on a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU, penned in August 2022) and highlights the commitment of both companies to explore and develop business ventures related to green hydrogen in the nation.

To recap, the last MoU entails both companies looking into the adoption of clean tech, such as hydrogen as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS), to decarbonise the energy sector.

Through this study, the companies will gain insights into the challenges and opportunies presented by the deployment of green hydrogen, the exploration of new solutions, identification of potential off-takers, and a collaborative framework between both companies.

In TNB's statement, the company said that the aim of this partnership is to cut carbon emissions in the transport, manufacturing, and power generation sectors. The company is also looking to explore using hydrogen and ammonia as co-firing options in its generation fleet, simultaneously allowing them to venture into hydrogen for mobility.

Datuk Bacho Pilong, Petronas Senior Vice President of Project Delivery and Technology, mentioned that the collaboration brings over 120 years of combined experience in engineering and technology. Together, they aim to build an ecosystem of technology and infrastructure to support the nation's sustainability goals.

In a related matter, early July also saw a few Malaysian companies signing an MoU to set up the Peninsular's first Mobile Hydrogen Refueling Station in Kuala Lumpur. This collaborative project is also supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), as part of the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR).
