Porsche rethinks going purely electric for the new 2024 Porsche Macan

Porsche is said to be rethinking its strategy of offering the 2nd-generation 2024 Porsche Macan solely as a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) for the US market, beyond 2025.
Following a recent meeting with US-based dealers, Porsche said it ‘will take a wait-and-see approach to go EV-only with its best-selling model’, according to Autonews.
The main issue is the lack of EV chargers (and maintenance of charging infrastructure), which has received pushback from customers concerned that the US charging network isn’t sufficient to support the Macan customer base.
The Macan currently accounts for one-third of all Porsches sold in the US. This number is expected to total 80,000 units in 2024 with the addition of the all-new Macan.
According to the same report, Porsche executives have indicated they know it's a problem, and they're trying to figure out how to overcome it most efficiently.
The issue is compounded in the US, where 60 percent of the charging network is made up of Tesla Superchargers which use the proprietary NACS port. This makes them incompatible with all Porsche EV models, which feature the Type 2 CCS charge port.
This has prompted Ford and more recently, Polestar, to use NACS ports on US-sold models to take advantage of the Tesla charging infrastructure in the second-biggest auto market in the world.
Porsche has previously announced that the next-generation 2024 Porsche Macan EV will be based on the Porsche Premium Electric (PPE) platform and features a 100-kWh battery pack as well as Porsche’s 800V electrical architecture.
Though there is no confirmation of when the 2nd-generation Macan will debut, earlier hints suggest that it could happen in late-2023 or early-2024.
Porsche’s plans to sunset internal combustion engines in the US beyond 2025 could spell more far-reaching challenges in other markets where charging infrastructure or access to chargers, such as in condominiums, is limited.
The same is true in Malaysia, but perhaps we won’t have to worry about it just yet. For now, at least, we can still get our hands on the current Porsche Macan with prices of the fully-imported CBU units ranging from RM 433k for the base Macan up to RM 786k for the Macan GTS.
