Selangor JPJ cracks down on improper use of vehicle trade plates

The Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has started the crack down on the improper use of JPJ issued trade plates on the road.

The Enforcement Unit is assisted by members of the Operation Unit, Overloading Enforcement Unit, and the Motorcycle Enforcement Unit of the Selangor JPJ office.

Motor Vehicle Trade Licenses (LPKM) or better known as ‘trade plates’ are issued by JPJ to enable vehicles without a road tax to be temporarily driven on the road.

They are usually issued to businesses like companies that would require to drive vehicles that either cannot be issued a proper road tax or have yet to register for one. These include car manufacturers, car repair shops, and car distributors.

Recently, JPJ has realised that many trade plate holders have been misusing the plates. The wrongdoings include the use of fake trade plates, expired trade plates, using another company’s trade plate, using the trade plates for other purposes than declared to JPJ, and not displaying the trade plates properly.

JPJ has investigated 79 vehicles during the operation, have taken action against 41 vehicles for one or more of the reasons mentioned above. For the operation, JPJ set up camp around Puspakom inspection centres.

The penalty for the misuse of trade plates will incur a fine of RM 5,000 or not more than RM 20,000. Or the wrongdoer can be imprisoned for 1 year or not more than 5 years under Section 108 (3) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Other than that, if a vehicle is found to be using a fake trade plate, JPJ has the right to confiscate the vehicle under Section 64 (1) of the same act.
