Boxy-looking jeeps certainly have their fair share of fans. It looks retro and tough, and yes, we’re including the Suzuki Jimny among the ranks here despite its size. Not wanting to be left out, Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) luxury SUV division, Wey, launched the Tank 300 in 2020.
But for those who saw the Jeep Wrangler-looking ladder-frame chassis SUV and thought it needed to feel a bit more cyberpunk, Wey has revealed the Cyber Tank 300 at the recent Auto Shanghai 2021.
Based on the Tank 300, Wey has given the boxy off-roader a makeover. We think that the designers must be binge-watching sci-fi films like Blade Runner, Terminator, The Matrix, and Akira to get inspired.
The result is an SUV that looks more like a Mercedes-Benz G-Class that you would normally see in Pavilion or around Bangsar Village. Gone are the plastic fender flares and in go the body-coloured wheel arches, restyled bumpers, a hood scoop, and a rear spoiler.
You probably wouldn’t dare to take this off-roading especially with those 21-inch wheels on Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV rubbers.
With the minimalist light design, the Cyber Tank 300 shows its best-looking design element and one that works very well with the futuristic aesthetic. From the light strip that trails across the front grille to the neon-looking taillights, it’s a light show for the hip aestheticians.
The G-Class tag however becomes more obvious the moment you step inside. Resplendent with white leather upholstery and chrome trims, it gives off a menacing villain vibe, but at a much cheaper price.
Oh, about the price, Wey hasn’t mention whether the Cyber Tank 300 will enter production nor are there any mentions of what powers the futuristic-looking SUV.
The standard Tank 300 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine (230 PS/387 Nm) paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and starts from RMB 175,800 (RM 111,000).
