There are different grades of petrol available in Malaysia – RON 95, RON 97 and RON 100. But what are the differences and is one better than the other? We dissect it for you in today’s episode of Answered.
The biggest difference between RON 97 and RON 95 is that the former has a Euro 4M rating while the latter has a Euro 2M rating. This makes RON 97 (Euro 4M) the cleaner fuel with a lesser sulphur content of 50 parts per million (ppm) as compared to the RON 95 (Euro 2M) sulphur content of 500 ppm.
The higher sulphur content results in more exhaust emission which contributes to the formation of acid rain. The Malaysian Government had plans to introduce Euro 4M grade RON 95 but talks about the implementation have gone cold.
At press time, RON 97 is priced at RM 2.79 per litre while RON 95 at RM 2.08 per litre.
