Perodua projects battery electric and hybrid vehicles (xEVs) to make up for 20 percent of the total industry volume (TIV, or total new car sales) of Malaysia by 2030, reports Bernama.
Speaking at the memorandum of collaboration (MOC) signing ceremony between the company and Tourism Malaysia yesterday, Perodua's chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad said that the target was given by the government, and can be achieved with cooperation.
The Ativa Hybrid is still undergoing real-world tests among customers
โWe need to come up with a new product. We have not finalised the production timing, but the target given by the government โ 20% by 2025 or 2030 โ will materialise if all parties cooperate,โ he said.
โWe are working together with the government and other partners. We have been appointed in the new industrial plan to spearhead the EV development in Malaysia,โ Datuk Zainal continued.
Datuk Zainal also mentioned that the overall EV ecosystem needs huge investments, and hopes that other companies will be able to help the government's targets, one of them is the building of 10,000 EV charging stations nationwide by 2025.
This is in keeping with prior announcements by the government and its targets to facilitate Malaysia's xEV industry; and aside from the charging station goals, they have also announced the introduction (and continuation) of EV incentives.
Earlier last week, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) Tengku Datuk Seri Zafurl Abdul Aziz laid out that Malaysia targets to have xEVs make up for for 20% of new car sales by 2030, 50% by 2040 and 80% by 2050.
Meanwhile on Perodua's side, the company is expected to unveil its first hybrid vehicle in 2024, and an electric (BEV) one in 2029.
