There absolutely are, they're just targeted for different markets that you might not be familiar with. I live in China, and these are crazy successful here. There are lots of examples of these in China and also in Asia. Mercedes' V and R class are really popular choices here, but there are also lots of other examples. Here in China, people like big, spacious cars. But some of these people prefer to be chauffeured around rather than to drive. Since having a personal driver in China is incredibly cheap(Starts at around $800 US), many people have chauffeurs driving them around in huge minivans like this: Buick GL8. The original GL8 was introduced in the Chinese market in the late 1990s as a rebadged Chevrolet Uplander (Pontiac Montana/Saturn Relay). Many people bought it to be chauffeured around in so Buick decided to update the car in 2007, and it was such a hit that Buick decided to completely re-design the car to what you see above. These cars are not luxurious to drive, they're more luxurious to sit in and be chauffeured around in. They're big, they can haul a lot of people, and they comfortable. Being driven around in China is pretty standard and usual since the minimum wage here is really low, so hiring personal drivers are really cheap. Many other companies have examples of these "luxurious minivans" also. Mercedes: Viano, Sprinter(Many people customize the interior into a ultra-luxury traveling office), Vito Toyota: Previa, Alphard GMC: Savana Luxgen: 7 MPV, 7 CEO Nissan: Elgrand(Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, limited to certain parts of China), Quest. Why don't more luxury manufacturers try to put themselves out there since this is such a huge market in China? Mercedes obviously has, but I think it's more because of gain and loss. Many brands have already jumped onto the bandwagon. The GL8 was the most present in the early 2000s, along with the old Previa. Later in the 2000s, The Mercedes examples came in. The Toyota Alphard that was most present in Japan and Hong Kong since 2005-2006, was later introduced into China in 2010-11. What these brands have in common is that they build for markets that they're familiar with. In Asia, these brands know that their cars can be sold because having a chauffeur isn't as "impossible" as it may seem. Think about it like this, having a Chauffeur in the US is not as likely because they're a lot more expensive. You'd probably have to pay your chauffeur $40,000+ USD in the US, while it's 1/4 that amount in China. That means most luxury minivans would be driven by yourself, the owner of that $70,000+ USD vehicle. It's not fun to drive because it's big and bulky, so you aren't having any fun as the driver. It wouldn't sell well in the US, where most people drive themselves around. I'm not sure about Europe and all the Luxury brands there, but when you have the money to pay $40,000+ USD a year for your driver, you 're probably rich enough to buy the large luxury sedans that they have there. To own and ride around in brands like Rolls Royce, Mercedes S-class, Maybach, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8's, etc. Therefore I'm assuming some brands don't decide to build luxurious minivans since there may not be a huge selling market. How many people have enough money to afford a chauffeur, let alone a $70,000+ USD people's carrier? Not too many. But there are people who use similar substitutions in the US. People in the US are sometimes driven around in Escalades, Suburbans, Tricked out Vans, etc. They're not minivans
Only ten? Come on, I wish I could able to own more. Since it just imaginary, here are the cars that “if I could only own ten” possibilities, and probably either one of these. Daily Driver: 2010 Toyota Prius I am a car guy and I don’t mind to drive a Prius. Because I could own ten cars, that should be mean that I am crazy rich, and I don’t want to look rich for daily life. I want to blend in. Great fuel economy, comfortable, I could bring three or four other people, and this car could last for years. (FYI: In Jakarta, a Prius is considered as luxury car due to government regulation.) Other options: 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid, 2018 Mazda CX5, 2015 Subaru Forester, 2016 Toyota Fortuner, 2017 Honda Civic, Tesla Model S Weekend Warrior (Part 1): Ferrari 458 Speciale Just like a 458, but on steroids. I like my supercar looks and drive fast, and also beautiful. I also like the sound of the naturally aspirated V8 from it. Other options: Ferrari 488 Pista, 2017 Porsche 911 GT3RS, Lamborghini Aventador SV, McLaren 720S, 2015 Aston Martin Vanquish S Weekend Warrior (Part 2): Any BMW M Series. Another weekend warrior that I’d like to own is the sports car that I can use to go to the track, have fun, and go home. I also like that it still practical, so I can use it for groceries, strolling around downtown, or just driving alone in my beloved tiny metal shell. Other Options: Nissan GT-R Nismo, Any Mercedes-Benz AMG Series, 2020 Audi RS6 Maybe a Future Classic: Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) V-Spec II The 2.6 liter inline six RB26DETT for me is one of the best sounding Japanese engine ever (after the amazing Lexus LF-A’s V10). This car is also looks timeless, still gorgeous even compared to more modern sports car. Thanks to Fast and Furious franchise and Gran Turismo games, I always wanted one of these. In fact, two of these. If I able to own two, I’ll keep one stock just like fresh out from factory and modify one to become a supercar killer. It’s a motoring gem. Other options: 2001 Toyota Supra RZ (Mk.IV), 2002 Honda NSX-R Can Go Anywhere: Toyota Land Cruiser This car is big, and mean (in Indonesia). Especially in black. No one dare enough to hit because they don’t dare to mess with the owner of the Land Cruiser. In Indonesia, this car is owned either by (very) high rank government officials (including the army, the navy, the air force, and police), foreign embassy officials, and VIP’s. If I’m bored with it’s looks, I just go and simply purchase a facelift kit to make it looks like a Lexus LX570. Other options: 2018 Range Rover Autobiography, 2017 Mercedes G-Wagen Childhood Poster Car: Ferrari F40 This is not a car. This is a piece of fine arts. Made in a very limited number. One of the best car Ferrari ever made. Other options: 1980-1993 Porsche 911 Carrera, Lamborghini Countach, Ford GT40. A Gift for My Other Half: 2018 Lexus RX300 I’m a loyal person, including to my (future) partner. If I had committed to her, than I don’t mind spending a lot of money to make her happy. Because I worked hard so I could own ten cars, so why not let her use one so she doesn’t have to take a bus or train or taxi anywhere. Other options: Mini Clubman, Toyota Previa, 2012–2018 Mercedes-Benz A Class I’ll Buy This One for My Parents: Toyota Alphard 2.4G It is a rich Indonesian (or Asian) starter pack. This car is a must have for rich Indonesian. Usually, this car is owned by CEO’s, celebrities, or just rich people and driven around chauffeured. It is very spacious, you could have a business meeting inside. There is also the Wellcab version which has middle seat that could come out to help the elderly or disabled. It has a twin brother called the Toyota Vellfire. Other options: 2018 Toyota Voxy, 2017 Nissan Elgrand, 2017 Mercedes GLC Class, any Mercedes-Benz/BMW/Audi estate. Project Car: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX This baby can go fast. On tarmac and on gravel. I can build this car to become a fast rally car, a killer time attack car, or just a great show car. Tune up the engine, lower and stiffen the suspension a little bit, put on Gram Lights RGII wheels wrapped in Toyo, and add on Voltex kit. Damn, she looks beautiful. Other options: 2001 Nissan Silvia Spec R, 2007 Honda Civic Type R (FD2R, asia version), 2017 Honda Civic Type R (FK8R), 2013–2018 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, 2012–2017 Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ. 2000 Nissan Stagea Autech. Business Only: 2017 Mercedes-Benz S Class The Best or Nothing. That is what I want to show up to my clients that “You have made the right decision choosing me to help you find your solutions. I’m so good at my business, I could afford a Benz and another nine cars”. I always like S Class Mercedes. Every time they launch the latest version, it always getting better and better. This car is so good, even the base model. Since I am not using it on weekends, I just could put hire out this car for weddings to earn extra income. Other Options: 2017 Lexus LS500, 2016 BMW 740Li, 2013 Lexus GS350, 2014 Rolls Royce Ghost.
Definitely not true. You need to compare the biggest and 2nd biggest cities in both Jakarta vs Kuala Lumpur and Surabaya vs Penang. Lets us just focus on the CBD of both Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Jakarta has a lot of modern buildings, very clean street, very big and luxury malls in comparison to Kuala Lumpur. The streets of Jakarta CBD are filled with newer model cars and luxury cars, compare to KL and the taxi also show a Very Big Differences, in term of comfort, cleaness and attitude. There are two types of taxi in Jakarta, being a luxury taxi (using Mercedes Benz, Toyota Alphard and Camry), whereas the normal taxi is Toyota Vios. There is also train from Jakarta airport to downtown and inside Jakarta, also have the build MTR within Jakarta Area. There are many International school in Jakarta, either American, Australian, Japanese, Indian etc among with other national plus school and standard schools. For shopping and food, easily Jakarta can win over KL. But in general, KL is a safer city compare to Jakarta, as the number of religious extremist in Indonesia is much more greater than in Malaysia. So eventhough Jakarta is much nicer city than KL, but people still need to be fully alert when in the city, as something bad can happen anytime, anywhere, unexpectedly. For comparison of Surabaya and Penang, again Surabaya easily win over Penang with its modern cbd and building, shopping malls, number of international flights, university etc. But Penang win over Surabaya for the medical treatment or hospitals and food variaties etc, so for the comparison of the 2nd biggest city, maybe Surabaya and Penang at the same similar level. I have been visiting those 4 cities so many times in the last 10 years, so the above points based on my own experiences.
