How is Volkswagen perceived in the USA and in Canada?
Are we talking before or after Dieselgate? Anyway, can’t speak for Canada, but VW in the U.S. has always been a niche player in every segment they try to compete in. In recent years their efforts to become a volume seller in the U.S. have resulted in cheapening the Jetta (which they’ve slowly been rectifying with each model year since the “cheap” redesign) and trying to make the Passat an attractive offering in the competitive mid-sized segment. Both cars saw increased sales, but not really a huge jump in market share. The problem is that VW used to be seen as a somewhat premium offering in whatever segment they were in (compact, mid-sized etc..) but recent cost cutting to keep their prices competitive didn’t go unnoticed like they thought it would, and the reputation was dinged a bit. Also VW’s have a stigma of being less reliable and a bit more expensive to maintain than the leading competitors, and for the most part that reputation is based on reality. Having said that, I’m a first time VW owner (2015 Golf GTI) and haven’t had any significant issues with my particular car. The Golf/Golf GTI/Golf R really is the kind of car VW does best, the Jetta and Passat both lag behind the competition, the Beetle is just a stylish and less practical Golf, same could be said about the CC/Passat. Even though the Golf variants are the best VW has to offer, unfortunately in the U.S. gas is still fairly cheap so compacts in general don’t fly off dealer lots, but when you have a “premium” compact like the Golf, many Americans can’t wrap their heads around a smaller car costing as much or more than some larger vehicles. Many Americans still take the carpet shopping approach when considering a new car, and that means cost per square foot. Things are beginning to change though, seems like hatches are making a comeback, and it’s only a matter of time before gas prices rise again and spark people to ditch their massive SUV’s and full sized trucks. If VW is serious about being a big player in North America they have to do several things.. Improve quality to at least overall above average rating compared to other auto makers, or go the Hyundai/Kia route and offer a longer warranty than the domestic/Japanese makers who are the main competition. Expand the dealership networks. I know the “chicken before the egg” argument and sales must rise before dealerships sign on, but the fact is if VW wants to be a big player they need dealership coverage not just in large cities, but also strategically placed smaller cities as well. Americans do lots of road trips, some for hundreds of miles…and feel uneasy if their route takes them more than 100 miles or so away from the nearest place that can provide warranty repairs or even simply parts that may be hard to source otherwise. Stop treating North America like second class citizens if you’re serious about being a marketplace force here. Thanks to the internet we’re aware that we don’t get VW’s full lineup (including some cool models like the Scirocco) and even when we do get the same models, ours may be 2–3 years behind as far as platform generation. Oh, and we can also see that buyers on the other side of the world have a lot more options for customizing their cars from the factory..for example they aren’t forced to give up tartan plaid seats if they also want a sunroof or upgraded sound system..grrr! Now that we have assembly plants for most of our lineup in North America, no excuse to continue that practice. All of this may be for naught since VW seems to be not only completely abandoning a segment they once ruled, (small/mid-size diesel cars) but making plans towards shifting everything to plug in electrics and hybrids. Good luck with that…If my GTI is one of the last of a dying breed, I’ll drive it until it starts falling apart, then move on to a different brand.
What exactly is the smell of a new car?
It depends… Usually what people refer as the “new car smell” is mainly the smell of the plastic and/or leather and/or other products used to make the interior of the car. Remember that before delivery, new cars seats and steering wheels are fully wrapped with disposable plastic bags and plastic protection films. New cars are also delivered in containers by boats and trains and can sometime sit for a long time under the sun without real ventilation so the hot plastic smell may well stick to the interior. But if you work in a car dealer, you can sometime smell something else. For example, I used to work in a Hyundai dealer where we used to receive cars coming from British Columbia and the United States. We could always tell where they came from by the smell because cars coming from British Columbia smelled like sea or fish because they are delivered by boat instead of the U.S ones coming by train. But after a while, the smell wears off and it starts smelling that new car smell again… And you can sometime guess the car brand just by the smell… Volkswagens for example have a characteristic smell that seems to stick for years. Just get into an old Passat and you’ll notice they still smell like a 2009 Jetta! Old Fords too are the same. Brand new higher end cars on the other hand tend to have an almost sickening leather smell after standing for a long time in the sun. So the “new car smell” is pretty subjective and most people don’t sit in a lot of different new cars in a row so they can’t really compare thus applying the “new car smell” to any new car. I wouldn’t be surprised if it had something to do with the psychological fact of buying something brand new.
