mercedes 600sl Q&A Review

What's your favourite Mercedes car of all time?

From 1989 to 2001 if I am not wrong , There Mercedes SL serie with body code W129 , it is a trulls legendary car especially 600SL with V12 and 408 HP . In early , classic Mercedes , I can tell : The Mercedes Gulwing ( too expensive to buy one , almost impossible ) but more affordable Mercedes PAGODA form 60’s and beginning of the 70’s 230 , 250 or 280 W113 are my favorite Mercedes , true pieces of Art design.

When should I replace my car thermostat?

If your car starts running consistently hotter or cooler than it should. Or if you have a Jaguar XJS, there’s a round of maintenance that should happen on the cooling system every 15 years, or upon ownership if you don’t know when it was done last. I’m in the process of doing exactly that on mine. The car tended to get hot in traffic in any weather over 65 degrees. It also got hot at highway speeds above 65 mph. I knew before I started taking it apart that the fan clutch was knackered, and that the auxiliary electric fan wasn’t coming on. I’ve had the radiator recored. I got the old water pump out the day before yesterday, and I finally got the last of the belts off. Next will be replacing both thermostats (It has two), before I get to put the thing back together. During this process, I’ve had the thought that I should have held out for a Mercedes 600SL more than once. I’ve also decided that I’ll never complain about any job on my Mercedes 300D being difficult again. Mercedes is a truck and bus company that also makes cars. They are used to making commercial vehicles that have to be relatively easy to work on. Jaguar, when they designed the XJS, were hella broke and stuffed a rather nice V12 engine into a too small engine bay.

Which would you consider the king on the road, Mercedes Benz or BMW?

Ferrari. Ok, not one of the choices. Porsche. Ok, also not one of the choices. Between Mercedes and BMW, it depends on which model you’re looking at and what you consider good in a car. I’ve had a Benz diesel for a number of years and I like it. About a year ago I decided it was time to add something new to the stable. I considered an E32 750iL, as well as an R129 600SL. Being relatively poor, I instead ended up with an X27 Jaguar.

Would you rather have a brand new Toyota or BMW?

No. I don’t particularly want a brand new vehicle of any kind. At least not if I’m paying my own money for it. If you’re giving them away…(pause while I check BMW’s website. No M3?! WTFO!!!) Ok, I’ll take an M4 coupe in Sakhir Orange Metallic with Golden Brown Exended Merino Leather interior, carbon fiber trim, and of course, the manual transmission. As for paying my own money, the last two used car adverts I responded to were a ’93 600SL Mercedes (6 liter V-12), and an ’85 Jaguar XJ12 (5.3 liter V12). Neither panned out. Still looking for a cheap V-12. In the mean time, I’ll keep driving my 1983 Mercedes 300D.

Jaguar owners, why did you decide to buy one?

I wanted something with a V12. I can’t afford a Ferrari. The first guy with the 600SL Mercedes couldn’t find the title. Somebody got to that 750iL BMW before I could look at it. The next SL600 dropped off Craigslist before I could make arrangements to go look at it. Then a really cheap XJ-S popped up. I checked it out, made an offer, and became a Jaguar owner. The car is messed up enough that it’s crossed my mind to pull the motor and shoehorn it into something else. I found out some crazy bastard in South Africa has already done a V12 Miata. I think a Jag V12 in a Corvette would blow the LS fanboys’ minds. For now, I think I’ll just leave the motor in the body it came with.

How much do car engines cost by themselves in supercars?

A whole lot. Here’s an example from a NOT supercar, merely an expensive car with a ,V12,. The car in question is a ,1993 Mercedes 600SL, (,R129,). It carries Mercedes’ bulletproof ,6.0 liter V12, making ,384 ,HP, / ,424 ,lb-ft, of torque stock. It is capable of much more, and was modified for other models (typically with a bore/stroke change, to enlarge it to 7.0–7.3L). Top speed:, ,155 mph, (ECM Limited) Actual Top Speed,: ,174 mph, (ECM - Limiter removed) The ‘,Long Block,’ (engine, w/cylinder heads) retailed at the dealership (through the Part’s Department’s ‘Retail’ counter) for ,$40,000,. The car’s window sticker in 1993 was ,$128,000 ,(I owned one of these in the mid 2000’s. Hugely expensive to fix, but at high speed there’s nothing like a ,V12,!). Part of the reason for the expense is that Mercedes likely sold (or even used for warranty replacement) nearly ,none,. The fewer of a given part a manufacturer has sold, the more expensive it is comparatively. Luckily, most newer (1990 and up) high-tolerance, hand built engines are extremely durable… not prone to any mechanical failures, nor even what what most would consider ‘normal wear’, due to higher quality metals and metallurgy going into the engine’s component parts. So long as you keep critical fluids like the oil and coolant full and clean!

Would you rather be given/have a Mercedes Benz or a Tesla?

For actual driving, I’ll take the Benz. This is my Benz. There are many like it, but this one is mine: (1983 300D Turbodiesel with manual transmission) For more actual driving, if I get a choice, I’ll still take a Benz: (600SL with the 6.0 liter V12. I was looking at one or two of these before I bought my V12 Jaguar) As something to be given, I’ll take a Benz: This 1954 Mercedes-Benz F1 car was campaigned by none other than Juan Manuel Fangio and sold for $31 million in 2013. I could sell that and retire. And then buy the Ferrari that I want but can’t afford right now.

Is it a good decision to buy a pre-owned car?

Every car I’ve bought has been a used one. Sometimes the experience is good. Other times it’s less good. I’m currently in the market for another one. The good: I picked up an ’86 Lincoln Town Car with 96,000 miles on it for $1600 in 2001. I drove it for five years and put 60,000 miles on it. I had to do some work here and there, but for the most part it was a good car. I picked up a ’77 Mercedes 240D for $480 in 2006, drove it for three years, put 24,000 miles on it, and cannibalized it for the transmission to do a manual swap on another Mercedes. This brings me to the ’83 Mercedes 300D I got for $800 in 2005. I still have it, though I quit keeping track of how much I spent on it after about the first $12,000. That bad: What immediately comes to mind is my current car search. I decided it’s time for me to own something with a V-12 engine. The first car I called on was a ’93 Mercedes 600SL for $3500. Guy couldn’t find the title. Then I called on a Jaguar XJ12 Sovereign for the same price. Hasn’t been started in a few years. Then I looked at an ’86 Jaguar XJS. Beautiful car, but it hasn’t had a coolant change in over a decade and the tires are 18 years old. Sure it runs fine now, but will it make it 130 miles home without a dropped valve and four flat tires? I don’t know, so I didn’t buy. Then I texted about an ’89 BMW 750iL. Dude was in San Francisco. Car was in Davis. By the time I got a text back, it was to tell me some other fellow was buying it. Still looking. Oh, and there’s a ’95 Ferrari 456 in Sacramento. Only problem is they want $67,000 for it. I don’t got $67,000.

Are German automakers not worried that the unreliability of their cars will hurt the reputation of their cars in the long run?

Don’t know where you’ve got this assumption that they’re unreliable. I’d say British, Italian, American and french cars are a lot more unreliable. My cars at the minute are a 2005 Audi Allroad (a beefed up off-road version of the A6 Quattro with a 2.5tdi V6 up front) and the Mrs has a VW golf MK4 2001 1.6L Petrol. The Audi is doing well at 143,000 miles. It’s been well looked after and it shows. The only thing wrong is a sensor in the drivers door wants replacing and the latch in the passenger side is a bit sticky. Other than that it’s like a new car and it’s 16 years old! Best thing about it is when it does break it’s typically very easy to swap parts out, there’s plenty of breakers for parts. The whole range of Audi's is very modular and parts are interchangeable between other models in the Audi VW range. So fixing it is usually cheap and relatively simple. The Golf is barely broken in at just over 100k miles. The engine runs sweet as a nut and the gearbox is a little stiff in places but generally quite nice. The interior is a little shabby and the radio doesn’t work. But for a 20 year old car that cost £400 you can’t complain. It hasn’t let us down yet! It’s a fantastic little car and great for my partner to learn in! Meanwhile my Citroen relay van seems to fall apart constantly and develops new fault codes every other day. All the paint and trim is falling off it. It’s only 10 years old! I also know a guy who daily drives a 70’s Mercedes 600sl and a 90’s Mercedes W123 estate without any issues. And my brothers daily driver is a 1996 Mercedes coupe. I don’t think the German automakers have anything to worry about.

How do ordinary people with average incomes afford luxury cars?

Luxury cars depreciate. A lot. I bought a 1983 Mercedes 300D in 2005. It cost $31,000 in 1983. I paid $800 for it in 2005. I also got a 1977 Mercedes 240D in 2006. When it was new, it cost about $12,000. I paid $480. I recently was looking at a 1993 Mercedes 600SL. New, it was about $123,000. Seller was asking $3500. If he could have found the title, I probably would have bought it.
