Why did the UK Police decide to acquire a fleet of Lotus Evora hypercars? Oxford Diecast has recently released a model in UK Police colours in 1/76 scale and it is an extremely nice model, why not the Jaguar F-Type with the F-Pace and XK R operated?

Ok, let’s unpack all the wrong here! There is no UK police! The forces are organised on a county or metropolitan level. There was ,one, car. It wasn’t acquired. Lotus wrapped an Evora, stuck on a light bar and loaned it to the company’s local Norfolk Constabulary as a publicity tool for their Christmas safe driving campaign in 2010. The car was only used for display purposes to attract attention to the message – drive safely. After Norfolk plod returned the car, West Midlands Police asked could they take it on loan for a fortnight. They then sent it pootling around on the M6 and M62 as a veiled threat to boy racers during a targeted anti-speeding campaign, before returning it. Since then, the same car has been repeatedly loaned out by Lotus to any force who wants to use it for publicity on their anti-speeding campaigns, and of course for Lotus! But it’s just that; a publicity tool. Hypercar? Evora?? Who d’you think you are? Nigel Mansell? Actually, Lotus ,have, delivered the Evora as a functional police car, just not in the UK… The Carabinieri got two donated at the same time as the one in England – a PR ploy by Lotus to mark the 150th Anniversary of Italian unification – to add to their famous Lambo! As in the UK, the Evoras are mostly a marketing gimmick – for both police and Lotus! – although the space behind the drivers has been fitted out with a medical refrigeration unit, since they are used to transport organs for transplant; an idea harking back at least to Rover’s “Jam Sandwich” SD1s and the famous “Liver Run” from Stansted Airport to the Cromwell Hospital in 1987.
