4wd suzuki alto Q&A Review

How is the 2019 Ford Figo Petrol 1.5 L automatic?

I bought the Ford Figo Titanium 1.5 L AT few months back. Since I owned an Alto 800 previously, for me the change was drastic, especially in terms of power. I moved from 47 bhp to 120 bhp, so it was like driving a mini rocket. Let me first tell you how I got here. I had the following filters for my future car: 100+ bhp power 150+ Nm Torque ABS/EBD(They had become the standard in 2019) Automatic(Preferably not AGS, I wanted smooth shifting) Should be a hatchback(for easy maneuverability) 180+ mm GC <11 Lacs INR Good To Have(For a little more convenience/comfort or simple for the heck of it): Auto AC Tilt and Telescopic Steering Wheel Audio Control on Steering wheel Reverse Cam Hill Assist Height adjustable seats Traction Control Systems(For those difficult terrains) I had already rejected the following brands: Maruti Suzuki - Highly reliable, time and trusted engine, beautiful designs, great fuel efficiency, but low build quality that people have recently complained about Toyota - Highly durable cars which will probably last as long as me, but not many options in hatchback/sedan category, bland interiors, not very powerful engines Honda - Highly reliable engines, but current cars have low build quality, Power not impressive Hyundai - Great cars, Highly reliable, Classy interiors, But pricey for what they offer, there weren’t many options for my filters(auto was costly and less powerful) Fiat: I am sure they have great cars but they dont cater to mass market, they lack so much and are not up to date what today’s market wants. had Fiat Punto Avventura been an automatic, I would have bought it. Renault- Very few options, only thing I liked was a duster and it was too big for my use and he AT wasn’t impressive. But if I ever wanted to go for 4WD, I would opt one. Haven’t considered Datsun, Nissan, etc, never saw them much, so didn’t occur to me. I was willing to sacrifice some features here and there and I finalized with the following cars(And the reasons why I rejected them): Volkswagen GT TSI Petrol(Best car to drive in the category, highest torque in all hatchback I have ever driven, but pricey! Also interiors were age old and car wasn’t not spacious, still the real reason for rejecting was the cost for features was higher. ) TATA Nexon Petrol XZA(People call it an SUV, but I think it was more of a large hatchback, powerful engine and had all the above features, but the gearbox was lethargic on shifting and head nod was very prominent, felt it could be smoother, somewhere all the cars I test rode had something or the other broken, some seat wouldn’t recline, there were panel gaps, so didn’t feel like a finished product) Ford Figo Titanium 1.5L Petrol AT(Loved it on the first drive, felt second to VW, after driving all the cars in the above list, ticked most of the boxes above, but fuel efficiency was low and felt the brake a little heavy for bumper to bumper traffic, but the biggest driving factor for my purchase was the engine, so powerful, so responsive, had more power than the GT TSI, but lower torque, still the price was too good for the car) And thus, I bought he Ford Figo Titanium 1.5 L Petrol AT! I call her Snow-white aka Snowy. How does it feel now? Beautiful torque(150Nm), RPM reaches red line in no time. I swoop out of traffic and in no time there is no one around me. I love that feeling, but sometimes the fear of hitting a random person emerging out from nowhere, or a cow, keeps me in check. Where I live, in Pune, encountering a motorcyclist, riding wrong side on an overbridge is a common sight. I unleash the energy on freeways though. The confidence of overtaking is awesome, I feel so connected with Snowy, as if she feels my energy. But yes, bullock carts, cyclists and pedestrians, on freeways remind us where we belong. That keeps me in check time and again. I have only hit 170 kmph as of now, which she did effortlessly. There is a very slight head nod when downshifting specifically, don’t feel much while upshifting, I am good with that. Once I got stuck in mud with all tyres trapped, the TCS came into life and the wheels started rotating in pulses and I was out of it in no time. For mild off-roading this works well. Hill Assist is a beautiful feature. When we are out exploring the western ghats(snowy has been to extreme climbs in those hills), we set off effortlessly from any climb, but it wont do as good if the climb is slippery. Haven’t tried it yet. A major factor to consider on buying a car is the comfort on long drives. Comfort comes from the suspension, seats, AC and NVH. Suspension is soft on this car so you get tossed a little on bad roads. Seats are firm and have good support. AC and NVH are phenomenal. I am still considering GC is good with 174 mm, but due to its soft suspension it tends to graze on bad roads. I must warn you, this is one downside of this car if you frequently travel through big potholes. You might want to consider a firm setup and 190+ mm GC. Rear leg space is not great, especially if the driver is a tall person. Also, boot space is just average. AC is very powerful and you will only keep it in its lowest settings even on a hot summer day. Although the car has a push start/stop button, you still have to unlock the car using the key, so this a partial keyless feature. You have to unlock the car manually and keep it somewhere inside the car to start it. Not a deal breaker for me. I would say, I have enjoyed every bit of the drive, Snowy has offered. Its quite true what they say, Fords are drivers’ cars. Also, Figo is a highly underrated car, but honestly I feel it competes with a category above it. A lot of people have an opinion that its a meek car, because its small, but it shares the same engine as an Ecosport, which clearly places it in a category above for the power. Edit: I had a lot of questions on the fuel efficiency. I have some update on that. I wasn't getting much in the city, maybe 9 kmpl on an average because where I live, there is a lot of bumper to bumper traffic. But recently I had been touring Rajasthan and Gujurat and the fuel efficiency with 2 passengers on board was at 15kmpl. I used the full tank method. I was constantly driving at 100–120 kmph because the roads in Gujarat and Rajasthan are great. And here's Snowy-

Which is the best car brand and model (hatchback) to buy in India in terms of safety features and strong built?

I take this question as incomplete, because the answer will vary according to different price points in the market. The Indian automotive market doesn’t have a perfect definition of “hatchback” and most buyers refer to the “hatchback” as the first small car. However, as things are maturing, we can answer this in many ways. The traditional definition of “hatchback” goes towards the erstwhile small car market - that was dominated by the Maruti 800 and its various versions like the Alto etc. that faced tough competition from Korean makes like Daewoo and Hyundai during the late nineties. Because of the perceived lack of social status with small cars, Indian automotive buyers were not willing to pay the premium for safer and faster hatchbacks that were offered by manufacturers for a premium. While the i20 is a popular hatchback today, it’s older variant, the Hyundai Getz wasn’t as popular as its sedan version, the Hyundai Accent. Today, there are sedan and hatchback variants of every model offered at the entire spectrum of price points, which means there is a price vs. features bargain along with brand image for the consumer. In the entry level market, you could buy a hatchback like the Hyundai Eon, the Alto 800, or the Mahindra e2o (an electric car), but safety takes a backseat in these vehicles as opposed to the utility. Although the shape of the Tata Nano is like that of a hatchback, but because of its mid-engine placement, I wouldn’t like to call it a hatchback. At the other end of the spectrum, there are the likes of Mercedes A Class, the BMW 1 Series and Volvo V40. I would call these premium hatchbacks which offer very good safety features, often better than many sedans in the mid-range price bracket. If one looks at what makes an SUV (aka, ladder chassis, 4WD, off-road capability), then the likes of Audi Q3, BMW X1 are also essentially hatchbacks, but they are not sold as such a package. They would also provide a good balance of safety and built. There are lifestyle cars like the Mini Cooper, Volkswagen Beetle, Fiat 500 but again, they are technically not hatchbacks, but small cars that offer great value in terms of your statement of arrival. In the middle range of the market, there are cars like the Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Swift which are lower slung vehicles; and their higher counterparts like the Creta, Brezza, WRV etc. that offer varying levels of build quality, safety depending on which trim option you choose. In my opinion, the Koreans makes offer greater value for money at a cheaper price point as compared to Japanese brands, but the Japanese brands offer more value in terms of endurance, lower failure rates, and lower costs of maintenance. But safety being the premise of this question, the i20 along with its airbags has been rated 5 stars at a certain time, on the Euro NCAP ratings. But on the same scale, the Hyundai Eon didn’t fair so well. All in all, there is no one perfect answer to go by, in terms of what is the best hatchback on Indian roads, because by and large - we have almost every automotive brand offering a product in this category on Indian roads. And every brand offers different features on their safety cards, so it’s a tough one to answer. What I would like to offer as advice however is, that one shouldn’t get fooled by advertising claims or blanket beliefs like “German quality” because my perspective of the cheaper European makes such as Volkswagen (Polo) and Fiat (Palio/Punto) isn’t that great. They are “heavy” cars and sluggish to drive, but weight of a car is absolutely not the method to assess safety. If you must, there are numerous NCAP Crash Test videos available on YouTube for almost every make, and before making a purchase decision, one should look at what features you are opting for - with or without side crash protection, airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, ABS, EBD, Skid Control etc. before you match the video with the make/model you are reviewing. It’s nevertheless a very good question, and one must consider safety as the first aspect of decision making at any price point while purchasing a car. Which car is better for off-roading, XUV FWD or Innova RWD?

Neither. Both FWD and RWD aren't suited to offroading. Technically speaking, RWD is preferred over FWD in rough conditions. But this is purely circumstantial. Recently there was a video where it was shown that a Maruti Suzuki Alto mangaed to cross over a loose surface while a RWD Mahindra TUV got stuck. No vehicle which isn't a proper 4WD or at least an AWD is suited for an offroad situation. Depending on the situation, the FWD XUV might Trump over the RWD Innova or vice versa.

Are Maruti and Suzuki different car manufacturing companies?

Maruti Suzuki India Limited,, formerly known as ,Maruti Udyog Limited,, is an automobile manufacturer in India. It is a 56.21% owned subsidiary of the Japanese automotive manufacturer Suzuki Motor Corporation. As of July 2018, it had a market share of 53% of the Indian passenger car market. The company is headquartered at New Delhi. Maruti Udyog Limited was founded by the government of India in 24 February 1981, only to merge with the Japanese automobile company Suzuki in October 1982. The first manufacturing factory of Maruti was established in Gurugram, Haryana, in the same year. Affiliation with Suzuki In 1982, a license and joint venture agreement (JVA) was signed between Maruti Udyog Ltd., and Suzuki of Japan. At first, Maruti Suzuki was mainly an importer of cars. In India's closed market, Maruti received the right to import 40,000 fully built-up Suzuki in the first two years, and even after that the early goal was to use only 33% indigenous parts. This upset the local manufacturers considerably. There were also some concerns that the Indian market was too small to absorb the comparatively large production planned by Maruti Suzuki, with the government even considering adjusting the petrol tax and lowering the excise duty in order to boost sales. Local production commenced in December 1983. In 1984, the Maruti Van with the same three-cylinder engine as the 800 was released and the installed capacity of the plant in Gurgaon reached 40,000 units. In 1985, the Suzuki SJ410-based Gypsy, a 970 cc 4WD off-road vehicle, was launched. In 1986, the original 800 was replaced by an all-new model of the 796 cc hatchback Suzuki Alto(SS80) and the 100,000th vehicle was produced by the company. In 1987, the company started exporting to western markets, when a lot of 500 cars were sent to Hungary. By 1988, the capacity of the Gurgaon plant was increased to 100,000 units per annum.
