suzuki alto tachometer Q&A Review

What is the disadvantage of a KWID car?

The Renault Kwid is the entry-level hatchback by the French automaker for India. It was launched in India with an introductory price of Rs. 2.56 lakh, with one aim—to compete with the Maruti Suzuki Alto. It may look like the ultimate entry-level hatchback, but, like any other car sold in the world, the Kwid has its own pros and cons. Let's discuss a few Disadvantages of the Renault Kwid  A look at the Renault Kwid's disadvantages or cons first. Plastics To make the car affordable, plastic has been used. The wing mirrors are finished in plastic, not only to keep costs low, but to keep the weight low as well. A few more noticeable weight reduction measures are three wheel nuts instead of four and light weight doors, although Renault claim it has not compromised safety.  No Tachometer (RPM gauge) While older people wouldn't mind, the younger generation will surely feel the pinch. A tachometer makes the driver feel more connected to the car. It would raise the driving experience. Noise and Vibration Making a car affordable is not an easy job. The more you want the car to be noise and vibration free, the more it will cost. The Renault Kwid is quite noisy and harsh, especially, in the lower gears. Steering wheel adjustment This is another disadvantage of the Kwid. Steering wheel adjustment could have been present on the top end variants at least. This makes it difficult for short people to drive.

Which is better, Kwid or Eon?

The upcoming Renault Kwid will face stiff competition from Hyundai’s cheapest offering, the Eon. We take a closer look at the two to see how the battle each other in terms of interior and exterior design, features and space The Hyundai Eon is one of the most popular cars in India with brisk sales every month. One of the biggest competitors to the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Alto family, the Eon will go head on against the upcoming Renault Kwid. As we saw in our recent comparison, the Kwid pretty much trumps the Alto in almost every aspect, be it interior or exterior design, features and of course, space. So how would it do against the Hyundai? Well, read on to find out. Exterior Design The Kwid is a new type of small car, one that we have never seen in India. A micro-SUV of sorts, the car showcases a design language which is almost exactly opposite the one seen on the likes of the Hyundai Eon. The new Renault Kwid for example gets a raised look which is coupled with a side plastic cladding in black and a chunky side panel on the doors. The large and aggressive SUV-esque grille combined with the central logo too looks aggressive and the overall dimensions too suit the car well. Comparatively, the Eon is typically Hyundai with its tall boy proportions and fluidic design language. Being a few years old too has its disadvantages with not a lot of people flocking towards the Eon when it comes to sheer design prowess. That said, it does have a distinctive front grille, swept back headlamps that tends to give it a likeable look. At the rear too the small dimensions of the Eon goes well with the curvy design and elongated tail lamps. Compared to the Kwid that isn’t very conventional looking though, the Eon does look a little dated. That said, the Eon is certainly a better and more modern looking package than the likes of the Alto K10. The same curvy look continues on the side of the Eon too with a distinct line that stretched through the waistline of the car. The Kwid on the other hand is a little more conventional but does have a more raised and aggressive look that gives it the upper hand. Interior Design When it comes to the interior design of both the Kwid and the Eon, it is more difficult to choose a clear winner. Where the Eon has a very well styled interior with a distinct centre console flanked on both sides by a silver styling feature on both sides. The silver theme continues on the buttons too with a centrally mounted screen. The Kwid on the other hand gets the same touchscreen infotainment system that the likes of the Duster get. We personally love the way it is set up and are looking forward to using it in the Kwid too. Neither car comes with climate control though. GalleryThe two tone theme continues on the dashboard with a grey top section and a beige bottom half that gives an airy feel to the whole cabin. The smaller AC vents on the top too go well with the overall design. Comparatively, the Kwid employs a more angular dashboard with a large central console setup with a grey theme and a gloss black centre console. When it comes to the instrument binnacle, the Eon and the Kwid look very different. Where the Eon is simple and conventional with an analog console, the Kwid features an all-digital panel. The panel has a digital readout for the speed mounted right in the centre, a fuel gauge and a digital tachometer that reads distinctly. The two prong steering wheel design too is very conventional in the Hyundai whereas the Renault gets a chunkier wheel with well designed and detailed elements. Space In terms of overall space, as with the Alto, the Eon is not very large on the inside. The Kwid on the other hand is much bigger on the inside due to its larger dimensions and overall size. Although there is a decent amount of space in the front and the rear of the Eon, the Kwid is just a tad bit more spacious. Both cars have a comparable level of head room though due to their taller design but we think when compared the Kwid’s rear might have a little more shoulder room. When it comes to an overall package though, the Eon with its forward design and well styled interior might be one of the biggest adversaries for the Renault Kwid alongside the Alto.

Which car to buy under 9.5 lakhs on road in India?

My eyes glazed over and I let out a sigh. Fixing a budget is all good, when looking to buy a car. But what do you really need and want? What features are your must-haves and nice-to-haves? Those are the things that really need answering, in order to find a car out of the umpteen cars that are available at any given budget. I'll take a stab at dropping the right hints so that you can ask yourselves the right questions. New or used? Everyone loves that new car smell. But when you buy new, you're the one bearing the heaviest depreciation on the car. New cars lose 20% of their value in the first year alone. If you buy used, you can let some poor chap take the hit of depreciation and buy a car from several segments above your wildest imagination with the same budget. A new Ignis hatchback comes at 9.5 lakhs Rupees on the road; I am seeing 3 year old Mahindra XUV 500s run for only 40,000 Km at 9.5 lakhs available in Chennai today for sale online! Manual or Automatic? Manual transmission cars are proper fun to drive in enthusiast cars like the Volkswagen Polo. You can extract maximum desired performance, fuel-efficiency and control with the manual transmission in cars. But to learn to drive one is becoming increasingly difficult in our mad and lawless traffic. Even experienced drivers are switching to automatics these days for the sheer convenience of driving it in the city though. And for a learner or inexperienced driver, automatics are far better to drive around. You get the following Automatic transmission types in India today: Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) - these are actually manual transmission cars with a clutch that is hydraulically actuated (most cars in India have this) or electrically actuated (the new Santro is the only one having this). AMTs offer a jerky ride and the gears shift with a mind of its own and can be very irritating. AMTs perform reliably when mated to a bigger engine and AMTs mated to smaller engines (Suzuki Alto, Celerio etc.) are undeclared market failures. Too many Suzuki AMT car's clutch plates and transmissions have failed. But AMTs are the most cheap to manufacture and are the most fuel efficient of the lot. Stay away from Maruti AMTs and Mahindra AMTs! Torque converter Automatic - These come with a fixed number of gears and is a “pure” automatic type. In developed countries, really powerful engines have been mated to torque converter automatic transmissions successfully and this type offers linear acceleration and superb performance. But this is the least fuel efficient of the lot. The Hyundai Grand i10 comes with this transmission type. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) - This type of transmission doesn't have a fixed gear ratio and there's lots of electronic and computer wizardry involved. This is comparatively more fuel efficient than torque converter transmissions but are less efficient than AMTs. The Honda Brio, the Amaze, the Jazz - these come with CVTs. Petrol or Diesel? Petrol cars are free-revving and can be driven for fun. They cost less to maintain. But they return lesser miles per unit of fuel. Diesel cars are torquey by nature in contrast and cannot be revved as much as petrol cars. They return higher mileage per unit of fuel but cost a lot in maintenance. What's the expected passenger load in the car? Most passenger cars in India are poor in terms of passenger seating capacity. The Tata Nexon is a 5 seater on paper, but the 5th passenger is usually sandwiched and crumpled for want of shoulder room in the 2nd row. The Ford Ecosport is also at best a 4 seater. A TUV 300 on the other hand can seat 4 people in the 2nd row alone (for short trips, i.e.)! If you need performance with proper passenger loads, you need a body-on-frame vehicle (like the Xylo, Hexa, Marazzo etc). Body on frame vehicles don't sag under all that weight; the Ertiga, which is a monocoque bodied MPV, does sag under a full load. Its real ground clearance is poor under a full load. And its small engine isn't really meant to lug 7 people around. City or highway performance? Choose cars with shorter gearing for driving in the city so that you get better acceleration., ,My TUV 300 with short gearing is a proper city car. Highway performance needs more than 5 gears or a tall 5th gear. We're thinking about a car like the Honda Jazz here. A car with “tall gearing” would be able to cruise at high speeds without revving too hard (i.e., it can go at high speeds without having to turn its engine over at high RPMs). High RPMs stresses out the engine and your mind (because you can feel and hear the engine straining) when you keep driving it for long durations. Turbo lag or no lag? Another angle to consider - for city driving, with continual starts and stops in traffic, instant power delivery from the engine to the wheels matters a lot. Turbocharged engines tend to suffer from heavy Turbolag,. It's only diesel cars that mostly come turbocharged, although you do have petrol-fueled turbocharged cars too (e.g.; Tata Nexon Revotron, Ford Ecosport 1.0 L etc.) Turbochargers usually have an RPM range where the turbo begins working (a.k.a begin “spooling”) and once the turbo kicks in, the car moves like a rocket. But until it kicks in? Sluggish performance, no matter how much you press the accelerator. And lots of exhaust smoke! This will hurt you when moving in city traffic. Turbolag also hurts you if you're moving from a total stop on a steep incline (e.g., a hill road or a parking ramp). In fact there are videos of turbocharged diesel cars that are unable to move up hill roads in the Himalayas because of turbo lag and a slippery and inclined surface. If such instances are likely to be a regular occurrence for you - maybe if you live in the city or if you live in or drive to the hills often, consider getting a car with no turbocharger, or a car with no turbo lag. Example: Fiat's 1.3L Multijet diesel engine (powering Tata, Maruti and Fiat cars) has immense turbo lag and poor performance below 2000 RPM. The out-of-production Chevrolet Beat Diesel, the old Toyota Innova and the Mahindra TUV 300 have literally zero turbo lag, in contrast. Fun fact:, The all new Mahindra Marazzo is a car with a 1.5 L engine, 120 BHP, 300 NM of torque and a variable geometry turbo which only begins delivering decent power and torque in the narrow RPM range of 1500 - 2500. In the city, if you don't keep the RPMs in this narrow band, you have a fully loaded people mover that is incapable of moving briskly! If you don't want to have to drive with an eye on the tachometer (for the RPMs), don't buy the Marazzo! Or buy it if you will mostly use it on the highway. Hard or soft suspension? A hard suspension is great for outright cornering and high speed stability. But you'll bounce around a lot. The Tata Nexon is an example. A soft suspension makes for a pliant ride but isn't confidence-inspiring at high speed cornering and will kiss every speedbreaker under a full load. The Honda City is an example of this. Do you want to lie down or climb into your car? Sedans and a few hatchbacks are so low-slung that you need to get down and lie in them. You'll need to get up and climb out of it to get out. While this aids in their fun aspect to drive these cars around corners at high speeds, it just doesn't suit everyone. Body on frame vehicles typically come really tall where you climb into them. And this is no joke - Ford USA has dropped all sedans from their product listing for this reason alone. An increasingly aged US population does not want to suffer while climbing down or up out of low-slung sedans. Ford is all set to sell only SUVs in the US now! I'm going to take a break and stop here. If at all there's any questions, I'll be glad to take them. If my line of thought doesn't elicit further thinking, there's no point in elaborating any further! I really wish the questioner had added more pointed details in the question. And I certainly hope that no one just buys a car without asking themselves what they need/want! Trust me - the worst feeling in the world is realizing that you didn't want the car you just bought, after using it for a while.

What is the meaning of LXi, VXi, Z Xi, V Xi AT, ZXi Plus, and Z Xi AT in terms of vehicles?

Hello, This particular variant convention is followed by Maruti Suzuki. Here:— LXi Means the Base Variant in Petrol, where only minimum features are available like A/C+Heater, Power Steering. Some cars get power windows depends on the price. LDi Means the Base Variant in Diesel. Feature list is the same. Vxi Means the Mid Variant in Petrol, where some more features are available along with A/C+Heater, Power Steering, like Standard Power Windows, Music System, Wheel Covers, Turn Indicators on ORVMs(except Alto, S Presso, Celerio, WagonR), Day/Night IRVM, Parcel Tray, Tachometer, Steering Mounted Audio Controls( except Celerio, Alto), Remote Lock(except Celerio). VDi Means the Mid Variant in Diesel. Same feature list. ZXi Means the Top Variant in Petrol, whre you will get additional features along with the one present in the Mid Variant, like Touch Screen Infotainment with Tweeters, All Adjustable Headrests (except Celerio, WagonR), Rear Window Washer plus Defogger, Fog Lights, Light in Boot Area, Passive Entry/Keyless Entry (except Celerio, WagonR), etc. ZDi Means the Top Variant in Diesel. Same Feature List. ZXi/ZDi Plus(+) is the higher version of ZXi/ZDi with additional features along with the one present in ZXi/ZDi. AT means automatic, either Torque Converter or CVT(with Baleno). AT doesn't mean AMT(Automated Manual Transmission) like the one present in Celerio, WagonR, Swift, Dzire.

How can I modify my Maruti 800?

No matter what car your Maruti 800 is finally converted into, ,the usual practices ,you can do can be summarized as follows: The front of the car ,(gets the exact metal sheet treatment, comes with projector types LED DRL rings around, the front fenders are extended, etc.); The hood of the car ,( gets an elevation, etc.); The 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine ,( is reworked to feature multi-point fuel injection as opposed to the carburetor from the original and so on); The wheel ,(the tires are offroad, the tire size is increased, etc.); The track width of the vehicle, (is increased, is given negative camber, etc.). The roof, (is chopped off, is cut off, etc.); The rear of the car, (be replaced by new taillamps, a custom bicycle rack, and a custom rear bumper, gets side-facing seats, is cut off, is given wheel extenders, the taillights are blacked out, and so on); The boot of the car, (replicate the design, a massive woofer is installed, etc.); Beneath the car, (gets twin exhaust pipes popping out and so on); The sides of the car, (gets air scoops and added cladding, the doors are replaced by the metal-frame doors with tower bolt locks, gets new mirrors, etc.); Both sides of the bumper,(with air vents, a faux carbon-fiber skid plate below, and so on); The interiors of the car, (the original interiors may be ripped off, are covered in cream and blue shade, etc.); The dashboard ,(gets a dual-tone paint job, is knocked off, etc.). Of course, the specific modification steps still depend on what kind of car you want to modify your Maruti 800 into. Here are some different styles of modified cars of Maruti 800. At the same time, you can also learn some tips on how to modify your Maruti 800 from these examples. Modified car with Lamborghini style: Maruti 800 modified Honda 660 and Lamborghini hybrid Maruti 800 is modified to look like a sports car, as well as hybrid versions of Honda 660 and Lamborghini. The first thing they do is not modifying the air purifier and camshaft first, but they went all out and ,shredded the roof ,to make a convertible. Coming to the rear of the car, it has been replaced by a metal plate, which looks completely different from the original Maruti 800. The car also ejects dual exhaust pipes from below the car, and vents are provided on both sides of the bumper to provide power. Towards the trunk of the car,, the tuner tried to copy the trunk design of the Lamborghini Gallardo. Just like any other sports car, this Maruti 800 has an air shovel on the side and a cladding to make it look more muscular. These are artificial air scoops, which are positioned just to make the vehicle look more sporty than before. The front part of the car is processed with precision sheet metal, just like the bumper of a car. It also comes with a projector-type LED DRL instead of ordinary headlights. For the car's interior,, the original interior is completely torn off. The dashboard will get a two-tone paint job. The rear seats take up a lot of space to provide luggage space, so this makes it a two-seater car with two small children in the rear seats. There are other standard modifications and changes, such as door cushions, seat covers, and huge metal spoilers. The original engine has been retained. Although the modification cost the owner about 125,000 Indian rupees, considering the limited resources and the fact that it was made in the backyard, we said it did a good job. Modified Maruti 800 with Lamborghini-style doors The scissor doors on the hatchback look very unusual. The 800 with beautifully cut doors looks very good. It also has after-sale alloy wheels, but the biggest attraction is the Lamborghini-style doors, making it a big shot. Modified car with SUV style: Maruti 800 is modified to look like Suzuki Jim A Maruti 800, after modification, looks like Jimny! With Jimny's silhouette and large off-road tires, it now looks like an SUV. The modification work starts with knocking on the car door, body panels, car doors, tires, and everything else., Even the roof of the car was cut off, and the floor fitting and dashboard were removed. After knocking everything down, the car will get a metal front bumper and frame. To accommodate larger tires, the wheel wells, and front fenders have also been expanded. The hood of the car ,has been raised to give it a manly appeal-similar to what we see in Jimny. All bumpers, fenders, and cladding of the modified 800 are pure metal-the car certainly does not meet any pedestrian regulations. In order to increase the height and overall height of the seat, people often use gaskets or suspension upgrades, but this is very common. That's why this one gets tractor tires. Yes, the tractor tires on the Maruto 800 will not stick anywhere. Okay, the latter statement is exaggerated. After the roof was cut off, the roof was gone, only some metal railings could prevent the car from overturning. Door? Those were also thrown out,. What you get is a metal frame door with tower bolt locks on both sides. The taillights are the same as you see in the regular Maruti 800, but they have also been blacked out. The front is equipped with full LED headlights with DRL at the top, fog lights with DRL, and 4 auxiliary lights. The interior ,is covered in cream and blue shades, with side seats at the rear. You might mistake the outer cover for BMW's Yas Marina color. Overall, this must be the first Maruti 800 modified into a Suzuki Jimny, and it looks very good. SUV treatment in Maruti 800 SUV has gained great popularity in the Indian market due to its practicality and strong posture on Indian roads. This Maruti 800 has undergone SUV treatment, with a liftable suspension and larger 13-inch tires. In order to increase the appearance of other stereotyped SUVs, it is ,equipped with a front bumper, oversized rearview mirrors, and spare tires installed on the hood., It received the Zen Classic taillight and Toyota badge. Modified car with the JS design style: The JS design from Delhi makes Maruti 800 convertible In most people, overhead driving is a dream, and still a dream. The JS design from Delhi makes this amazing-looking Maruti 800 convertible possible. The small size of the car makes it look like a reduced version of a sports car. The bright yellow paint scheme is combined with black alloy to keep the car cans on the road. In addition, the car did not leave traces of the Maruti 800 design language. This Maruti 800 Modification really looks like an Italian sports car. In addition, ,the roof mechanism of the car, was designed and manufactured by JS, who also installed it in Alto. Therefore, the roof is the most important and first part to be modified. The Red Hot from JS Design The convertible 800 is the same as the yellow car and is customized by the same JS Design. However, this car will undergo some changes, such as, ,seat covers that match the body color, different bumpers, and body. This car looks really attractive and it would be difficult to identify the original car under the skin. Modified car with specific role style: Disinfectant Maruti 800 The back of Maruti 800 contains disinfectant spray. The first thing to do in the modification is to cut off the rear of the car, which has been made into a pickup truck. We can also see other examples of this type of modification to change the Maruti 800 to a pickup truck. In order to bear the extra weight, the car is ,equipped with a wheel extender at the rear to better distribute the load., Likewise, the tires look bigger and taller and can withstand additional traction. When it comes to the pickup truck, here are two good examples: Modified car with pickup style: Maruti 800s are converted into an American pickup truck Pickup trucks are not very famous in India. However, they are very practical for carrying large loads. Many Maruti 800s have been converted into beautiful pickup trucks. This bright red pickup truck adopts the, American blue leather truck shape, with the brand name engraved on the back cover., The taillights are from the first generation Mahindra Scorpio, while the headlights are borrowed from Maruti Gypsies. Pick up--- another modification version of Maruti Suzuki 800 This is another pickup truck version of the Maruti Suzuki 800., In-line work provides it with a rally-style cabin and rear bumper, as well as a spare tire installed at the rear to make it look more muscular,. The white subtle modification example also uses larger 14-inch alloy wheels and raised suspension. The car received a rearview mirror from Daewoo Matiz. Modified car with vintage style: General Maruti 800---an electric 800 This is a modified version of the Maruti 800. If Maruti wants to change the 800 to an electric one, they can use it. From the side, we can see that the tire size has increased. The car now has a new rearview mirror. ,On the front, the headlights are around the projector LED daytime running lights. ,In addition, the offset grill makes it look really sports and rally ready. There seems to be an artificial carbon fiber skid plate under the bumper. This Maruti 800 modification is definitely well done. This is not a huge change, but its end is very impressive. The Maruti 800 in 1984 was modified to look like a modern car The car covered with bright red paint ticked all the boxes on the exterior. Except for some important elements, every inch of the car has been modernized to make it fully alive. The car is equipped with ,LED headlights and taillight units., The 12-inch wheels in stock have also been switched to 13-inch alloy wheels. Mechanically, the car retains the backup engine but is equipped with MP-Fi instead of a carburetor. The car also gets power steering and power braking. Inside, the car is equipped with a brand new cockpit, which is controlled by a new carbon fiber dashboard. It got an updated dashboard with a red backlight. Unlike its inventory iteration, the new Maruti 800 also comes with a tachometer. The video shows that the increased fuel injection makes the car more refined, but requires more adjustments. Maruti 800 was modified to look like the previous generation of Volkswagen Golf Like the Maruti 800, the Volkswagen Golf is a legendary car. This Maruti 800 has been modified to look like the previous generation of Volkswagen Golf. The 800 has a flared fender and a raised suspension. The car’s round headlights and golf-style grille have clear lenses. The hood has been ,expanded to provide the desired effect. Modified car with body kit style: Maruti 800 Modified With A Wide-Body Kit And Fancy Interior Here, we have a modified Maruti 800, wearing a custom body kit. There are many changes in, the exterior and interior of the vehicle,, which we will discuss in detail. The car uses all-black exterior paint, and the front end of the improved version 800 is equipped with a new grille and round LED headlights. The front bumper is customized, with a dividing net on the air dam and a dividing plate at the bottom. The hood uses an external pin lock, and an electric sunroof is added to the car. On the side, we see the open-wheel arches, which give these 800 bodies a broad posture. The car uses customized 13-inch steel wheels with 175/50 tires on the tires. The track width of the vehicle ,has been increased and it has also been given a negative camber. At the rear, we see new taillights, custom bike racks, and custom rear bumpers. The car is also equipped with a custom exhaust system with double-ended pipes. As for the interior, it is as impressive as the exterior. The seats, door panels, and roof lining are all red, which looks very attractive. The front row is equipped with bucket seats and the rear row is equipped with conventional benches. This modified car also has a Sparco gear stage, and a large woofer is installed in the trunk. A fire extinguisher is also installed on the passenger side A-pillar. Except for the new exhaust, there does not appear to be any changes to, the engine or gearbox, ,which makes the car emit a heavy bass sound. The Maruti 800 used to have a 0.8-liter naturally aspirated inline-3 engine that produced 37 horsepower and 59 Nm. It can only be used in a 4-speed manual transmission (a short 5-speed limited edition is also available). Equip it!---Maruti 800 Modified With A Body Kit Equip it! Body kits for various vehicles made in India are very popular. This modified example also wears a body kit based on ,Coimbatore's car custom garage., The modified hatchback gets a new custom front bumper with integrated fog lights and a rear spoiler. Which car is better(In India): petrol or diesel?

Ya petrol and diesel both are good Apart from the entry-level car segment comprising the likes of Alto, Eon, Kwid, etc., almost every car model launched in our country nowadays comes with both diesel and petrol engines. While petrol cars used to be the most preferred choice for a long time, diesels – once considered to be a taxiwala's bastion – have eventually caught up. Diesel cars are now available in almost every type and diesel engines have taken a huge leap in terms of refinement and cubic capacity (cc) as well. In effect, diesel cars have become better, more affordable and give cut-throat competition to petrol siblings. So are diesels really that good nowadays that petrol cars can be given a skip? Let's consider the pointers below: Refinement This attribute of a car has a lot do with the car manufacturer. No two cars are the same and so is the case with refinement. But when we consider the overall refinement of diesel engines vis-a-vis petrol, the former certainly lacks a bit in terms of NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) levels. Then again, diesel cars higher up the segment are so refined that you only hear marginal engine clatter on the outside, while noise inside the cabin is comparable to a petrol car. You Decide – If you are really particular of NVH levels and can't stand the clattering noise, a diesel car will never please you. If you can live with a fair amount of noise or vibration, then a diesel car may not be a bad idea after all. Look up the CarDekho score to find out how much NVH a car makes to decide its suitability. Power Although the real test of a car's power for most of the Indian households is directly proportional to the people-carrying capacity of a car. In any case, both petrol and diesel cars have their own share of power attached to them. Mass market petrol cars are considered to manifest linear power delivery with great initial pick-up which means better response. The moment you press the accelerator pedal in lower gears, the car surges ahead but then it doesn't really inherit the pulling power after certain rpms. This results in better horse power or PS but low torque (Nm). On the contrary, a mass market diesel car (which generally comes fitted with a turbocharger) can showcase a great amount of pulling power which is credited to its increased torque figures (compared to a similar petrol car) resulting in a thrust of power. But, all of this happens when you pass certain rpms (revolutions per minute) on the tachometer. This means, there is a considerable amount of initial lag (often called as turbo lag) that you will face, which means despite pressing the accelerator flat, the car will take time to respond to your input. This will result in more torque (Nm) and less power (PS). You Decide- If you are more of an enthusiast and demand swift response from your car, then a petrol car makes more sense. Otherwise, if you really love that thrust of sudden power, despite the initial lag, then a diesel car is yours for the taking. Mileage Diesel cars deliver better mileage numbers than their petrol counterparts; there is no debate on that. To add to it, price of diesel per litre is less than petrol (except in some states like Goa) despite the current rollercoaster price difference between both. Service Maintenance This is a key differentiating factor when it comes to buying a diesel or a petrol car. Purchasing a car is no rocket science but the real deal comes when it comes to maintenance and service costs. Both petrol and diesel cars have their own pros and cons. Let's take an example of a popular modern-day hatchback, Maruti Suzuki Swift, in both its petrol and diesel avatar: Maruti Suzuki Swift VXi Maruti Suzuki Swift VDi On road price: Rs. 6,03,936/- On road price: Rs. 7,40, 329/- Price Difference: Rs. 1,36,393/- Now, with this price difference, you can fill 2,165 litres of petrol in your car (considering current Delhi petrol price of Rs. 63/litre). Assuming the average mileage to be 14 kmpl, you can drive a petrol Swift for 30,310km in this amount. Now, if your daily drive is around 50-60km a day, it will take you roughly 550 days to cover 30,310km. Hence, a petrol-powered Swift will run at least one-and-a-half years more for the amount you pay extra when going for a diesel. So, if your daily driving is not too long, a petrol car makes more sense. But, if you commute is over 80-100km a day, then buying a diesel will be more beneficial and economical. One also needs to consider the other important aspects of both petrol and diesel, i.e. service and maintenance. Service interval Maruti Suzuki Swift VXi* Maruti Suzuki Swift VDi* 10000km Rs 2100 Rs 3500 20000km Rs 4200 Rs 7500 30000km Rs 3300 Rs 7800 40000km Rs 6000 Rs 7500 *Tentative cost which includes labour charges Considering the service charges, running cost of a petrol Swift is approx. 40 paise per km over a period of 40000 km or 4 years (if average running is 10000 km per year), whereas, you will be spending around 65 paise per km over the same period on a diesel. Note - This does not include any wear and tear charges or other repairs done to the car. Now, let's compare the maintenance bit: Parts Swift VXi Swift VDi Oil Filter Rs. 100 Rs. 380 Fuel Filter Rs. 300 Rs. 1300 Gear Oil Rs. 700 Rs. 850 Clutch and Pressure plate Rs. 2200 Rs. 3500 Apart from some generic spares, diesel parts are a bit expensive when compared to its counterpart. The verdict After comparing all of the above segments, you can choose for yourself what suits you best. Diesel has its major advantage of low fuel cost and better mileage but when it comes to service and maintenance it will cost you more than petrol. This leads to a very logical answer – Don't just buy a car considering its great mileage and cheaper fuel price; buy a car after calculating the overall running cost and the tenure that you would want to keep it for. If you want to keep a car for long and drive more than 80-100km a day, diesel can be a valid option. Otherwise, if your running is quite less and you don't prefer keeping a car for more than 3-4 years, go for petrol. So, no matter what fuel type you go for, always remember to do these calculations first and double check your requirements before investing. After all, a car is a valuable purchase, so think and read before you buy!
