Backdrop: Maruti Suzuki is the one of the oldest automobile player in India which dates back to the times when the then Congress government opened the doors for foreign development investment. Banking on this oppurtunity, Suzuki collaborated with Maruti Udyog Limted around 1982. Primarily, Maruti Udyog Limited (initially it was called 'Maruti technical services private limited') stated purpose of this company as to provide technical know how for the design, manufacture and assembly of "a wholly indigenous motor car". It however needed an active collaborator & this was the time Suzuki stepped in. The Maruti Suzuki 800 (based on the the initial Suzuki Alto manufactured in Japan) was thus launched in India. Cheap, affordable & practical for Indian conditions as well the Indian customer. Being one of the foremost brands to manufacture an affordable 'common man car', Maruti Suzuki India had already understood the psyche of the Indian customer. This gave it a head start in most situations where other companies barely succeeded (apart from GM India's Ambassador). Look back at the cars that it has produced: Years 1982-1999: 800 (first people's car) 1000 (later termed Esteem & India's first 3 box sedan) Gypsy (4x4 off roader) Van (later termed Omni) Zen (hatchback) Years 2000-present: Baleno (upmarket sedan) WagonR (tall boy inspired design hatchback or the Multi Activity Vehicle) Versa (plusher version of the Omni) Grand Vitara (full grown SUV) Swift, Ritz, A-Star (hatchbacks) SX4 (segment B-C vehicle) Kizashi (segment D vehicle) Swift Dzire (compact sedan) Ertiga (Multi passenger vehicle) Celerio (hatchback with AMT) Note: I might have missed some names. As you will observe, the time frame during which these vehicles were launched, they became game changers for the industry. Getting it right: As i mentioned earlier Maruti Suzuki got a head start & they managed to bring in newer vehicles & technology that defined categories like the people's car with the 800, compact sedan (vehicles under 4m in length with the Dzire) & even multi utility vehicles with the Omni. Overall it was successful in: Making more localized parts & assemblies of the vehicles that drastically reduced cost. Catering to customers at a faster rate (Maruti Suzuki India was the first car company in India to set up a call centre in 2000). I recently happened to get a real time experience with their customer care & honestly it left me impressed. At once I received a message stating the contact number of the mechanic & when would he be arriving along with other details. And even more interestingly this was on a sunday! Below is an actual screen shot of the reply that I received from the Maruti customer care service. Even though the call got routed to the New Delhi centre, I received service in Maharashtra within the same half an hour time bracket. Setting up service centres not only in metros but also in tier 1,2,3 cities. This led to a mass appeal of the brand since a majority of Indian population still resides in tier 2,3 cities. Service in these regions was a complete runaway success for Maruti Suzuki. Maximum market share: This can be attributed to: low cost (which happens to be the major reason for its popularity) hassle free & low on maintenance nature of cars (owners of a Maruti Suzuki will correctly tell you so) robust customer service (according to my personal experience with Maruti Suzuki, it's way beyond that offered by Hyundai, which happens to be it's nearest rival) availability of spares (no other manufacturer has such a strong foothold when it comes to the availability of spares. Even the homegrown TATA motors fall short of Maruti's prowess when it comes to spares & their cost) good resale value (these vehicles have one of the best after market value, followed again by Hyundai. Plus if you upgrade to yet another Maruti Suzuki car, the exchange bonus & royalty offered are higher, if not premium, than the other brands) bringing in automotive tech at affordable rates (take the Celerio AMT for example or the projector headlamps in Stingray. No small car had these feature until now) Latest facts & figures: Since the time the 800 was launched, it was the best selling car in the country. The Alto (now the Alto 800) raised the stakes even higher when it came to monthly sales & bid a justified adieu to the now 'old fashioned' 800. Image: Alto 800 Below is the monthly tally of the top ten cars that are sold in for the month of April,2014: April: ,Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 - 16,763, ,Maruti Suzuki Dzire - 16,008, ,Maruti Suzuki Swift - 15,874, Hyundai Grand i10 - 9,612 ,Maruti Suzuki Wagon R - 9,280, Mahindra Bolero - 8,942 Honda City - 7,038 Hyundai Xcent - 6,663 Hyundai Eon - 6,500 ,Maruti Suzuki Celerio - 5,805 Note: Out of the top 10 best selling vehicles, Maruti Suzuki takes up nearly 50%. According to a new report for Q1 of FY (fiscal year) 2014: The growth was on the back of higher sales in the compact segment comprising Swift, Estilo, Ritz, which jumped by 53.9 per cent to 26,394 units as against 17,147 units in the same month last year. Sales of its popular compact sedan Dzire rose 9.8 per cent during the month under review to 18,953 units as against 17,265 units in May 2013. MSI, however, reported a decline of by 7.5 per cent in sales of mini segment cars, including M800, Alto, A-Star and WagonR, to 29,068 units as against 31,427 units in the year-ago month. Links for further details: Full details: ,http://profit.ndtv.com/news/industries/article-maruti-hyundai-sales-rise-in-may-m-m-tata-motors-disappoint-390190 Financial aspects : ,http://markets.ft.com/research/Markets/Tearsheets/Financials?s=MARUTI:NSI The Flaw: the only problem haunting Maruti Suzuki is ironically it's biggest asset. The brand image. It has always been perceived as an entry level vehicle manufacturer. This was the reason some of it's products like: Baleno, Grand Vitara, SX4 & the Kizashi tanked & never really took off. Image: Kizashi & Baleno It has always played safe with it's design philosophy as well. All it's cars wear a simple look rather than being radical as Hyundai's fluidic design. Even the facelifts like the swift had minor upgrades. The recently launched Celerio has subtle styling as well. It has perhaps followed the mantra, 'why change when it's already a success' The more efforts it makes to standout as an upmarket brand, the lesser people turn towards it. Example: for a price bracket of 7-12 lakhs would you prefer buying a Hyundai Verna, Honda City or a Maruti Suzuki SX4? The answer is quite obvious. No one would opt for the SX4 (even though it might be good in some areas that the competition) The road ahead: However, it is trying to shun that image & is working hard at delivering products that might change it's perception as a 'manufacturer that makes vehicles for first time buyers'. The to be launched SCross, Ciaz are some of it's plans to do just the same. Image: The Ciaz & S Cross Conclusion: Despite the few hiccups in it's product lineup, it has & still enjoys a majority of the vehicle market share in India. There are many reasons why the Maruti Suzuki vehicles enjoy a majority of market share, the major reasons being: cost, low maintenance, practicality, good resale value & obviously brand perception, although this has stalled it's progress in becoming a premium brand than just an affordable one. It is thus a combination of all these that has help it retain a lion's share in the Indian market.
If your budget is not suffices to buy a new car then you can go for it. Though it is a discontinued model, engine is very good(1100 cc) and powerful. Even it was in market from 1999 on wards and it is discontinued as i10 sales are less, when they stopped this car i10 market went like a boom. I own a Santro second hand petrol(2009), bought in 2016 for 2.5L, but it is less driven(9000km+). I doubted speedometer and went with a mechanic to check engine condition, suspension and overall performance. He told the car is very good in condition and can run another 6/7 years without any major problem. I am getting 13 as city mileage and 15 as highway mileage. Even you can see many santro car owners are still utilizing the vehicle. You might not get company spare parts but you can get third party spare parts all the time(at least next 7/8 years) And if you are planing to buy only second hand cars then go for it or swift or zen but don’t go for less CC engines like Alto. If you are planning to increase your budget or looking for some low cost new car then go for TATA TIAGO. Its budget friendly strong car. All Suzuki cars are best for mileage but are not strong enough to handle a crash.
If you can find a good one and bring it to Canada you can have a wonderful ride under you and attract a lot of attention but the novelty will probably get old in a year or less. I spent months mooning over Kei Cars when I couldn’t find a suitable old British car in which to enjoy summer outings with my friends. The Suzuki Alto will embarrass a lot of cars at the Stoplight Grands Prix, especially since it looks quite innocuous. Use it as a daily driver at your peril because service will be a hassle. That means difficult, not impossible, but you won’t find parts at CTC. If you have a beater for back-up and don’t mind the hassle of ordering parts from Japan, go for it. Have fun.
The Maruti - Hyundai rivalry in India: In the 1980s, Maruti had almost no competition in India. There were ,long waiting lists,, Their ,cars were in white thus saving costs,, and They required ,no marketing, . However, once Hyundai entered the market, things started to change. In the 1990s the Indian government and Japan’s Suzuki fought for the control of Maruti. Hence, they could not launch a new car between 1994 (Esteem) and 1999 (Baleno). It also delayed the launch of Wagon R till 2000. This was the perfect opportunity for Hyundai who came in and launched Santro in 1998. After that Hyundai has been constantly close on the heels of Maruti Suzuki with an aggressive product line-up. Pic below: Maruti Suzuki Alto vs Hyundai Eon THE RIVALRY Hyundai proved to be very good at promoting itself and made life tough for Maruti who hadn't been used to getting challenged before. Hyundai talked about ,power steering ,with Santro’s Zip Drive version which was the first small car with that feature. Hyundai talked about ,technology ,like MPFI which emitted lesser emission and met Euro norms as against Maruti’s carburettors. Even the Supreme Court, ,forced Maruti to accept the Euro norms and Maruti incurred costs as well as some loss of reputation. Hyundai in a brilliant move also advertised that Maruti’s Alto and Wagon R were ,four-seaters, as they only had ,two rear seat belts, whereas the Santro had three in the back making it a five-seater. Hyundai obtained an innovative design philosophy with Verna calling it ,fluidic sculpture, and ,promoted ,it. Maruti, on the other hand, had a new design philosophy from the Swift, and its cars became curvier, muscular and sporty, but it did not promote these changes. Maruti ,tied up, with the State Bank of India (SBI) to offer unique packages to its buyers and soon Hyundai also had its tie-ups. Maruti began focusing on the ,rural markets, in 2009 and Hyundai too followed in 2011. There was a solid rivalry between Eon and Alto 800 and Hyundai was quick to seize the initiative by starting a marketing campaign ‘,Trendsetter V/s Follower,’ claiming that their small car Eon was much superior to the newly launched Alto 800. For each offering of Maruti Suzuki in different segments, Hyundai had an answer. For Maruti’s ,Swift,, Hyundai had ,Grand i10, and for ,Alto K10,, it had ,Eon ,and ,i20,. If Maruti had ,SX4,, Hyundai had ,Verna. As a result, Maruti at one point slipped to a share as low as 40% and Hyundai reached around 22% share. However, Maruti has recovered and now it has around 50% share easily making it the market leader but the battle is heating up and will be interesting to watch in the coming years. From the customer’s point of view, the rivalry is great as both the companies will be on their toes, coming up with better products at competitive prices which will only benefit the end customer. The never ending rivalry of maruti and hyundai over market share Hyundai's scale a potential threat to Maruti Suzuki's dominance in India Hyundai vs Maruti Suzuki battle between top two brands in India 2012: Hyundai Vs Maruti Suzuki - Ad wars: India's most notable brand battles - The Economic Times

Since your major priorities are regarding cheap after sales and maintenance, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are the best bet. They happen to be the best in the business in these areas! Just to explain how do the automotive companies fare in terms of the overall after sales and maintenance department, continue reading. Maruti Suzuki:, This car company has been the winner in the Indian automotive market as far as sales, after sales, reliability, customer satisfaction and lower maintenance costs are considered. The major reason being the superb collaboration between Maruti which was initially a PSU (Public Sector Overtaking) which blended itself with the genius of the Japanese giant Suzuki. The result, Maruti 800 and the endless small cars that followed all the way leading to the latest generation Swift, all best selling cars in India. The primary reason the JV (Joint Venture) ticked the right boxes was the expertise of the Suzuki engineers to manufacture perfect engines for a small family car and the cost consciousness approach led by the Maruti division. It thus, comes as no surprise that despite the entry of other foreign car manufacturers in India, Maruti still leads the car sales, after sales services and lower cost of maintenance. Just have a go at this link below to get an insight about the sales of Maruti Suzuki cars in India. Link: ,Autocar India passionately and relentlessly brings you the hottest automotive news and the most comprehensive reviews, first! Image: The Maruti Suzuki Swift (Image courtesy: Google) Its year over year sales have increased by 9.3% despite the slowdown in the auto sector, which is a big feat in itself. And the best selling cars from its portfolio are the Alto 800, Swift and Swift Dzire that occupy the top three places for nearly every month of car sales in India. Check the following link. Link: ,Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Maruti Udyog Ltd Best Selling Car Maruti True Value Maruti Udyog Image: Maruti Suzuki Ritz (image courtesy: Google) Hyundai:, The Korean carmaker entered the foray of the Indian car market with the launch of the Santro and the Accent way back around 1999 and has never looked back since then toppling the homegrown companies like TATA motors and Mahindra and Mahindra to secure the next best spot after Maruti Suzuki India. Its flair for making cars that are usually termed as 'bang for the buck' hold true to its DNA even today. There is no possible car maker in India that has spoilt customers with endless equipment list and car variants as Hyundai. Image: Hyundai Elite i20 (Image courtesy: Google) Building confidently on the values of customer satisfaction, it has firmly made its presence in the Indian car market dominant. Again, no surprises here, after Maruti Suzuki cars, there are cars that come from the Hyundai camp that have gained the trust of the Indian customer. The result; the Eon, Grand i10, Elite i20 and even the compact sedan Xcent sell like hot cakes. Take a loser look and you'll notice these cars are rivals for the Maruti Suzuki car in these specific categories and guess what, Maruti hasn't faced a stiffer competition from any other car manufacturer than Hyundai in India. Image: Grand i10 (Image courtesy: Google) With aggressive pricing, better service centres, low maintenance, strong reliability and good resale value combined with radical styling than the competition, these cars have become the second best alternatives for the Maruti Suzuki cars. A market share of nearly 15% , just in the past decade! speaks for company! Link: ,Indian Car Sales Analysis : January, 2015 Volkswagen:, The German marquee has been well known in the world for its typical German attributes like excellent engineering and attention to detail along with premium brand status. However, in a market like India, that is cost conscious and where people look for cars with better mileage than those that have better driving appeal, it hasn't quite taken a good start. Not to say that the cars are not well engineered, but the premium price tag, costlier spares, relatively poor after sales service and low resale value have added to its woes. Image: VW Polo (Image courtesy: Google) The Polo and the Vento are the bread winners for the VW group but they haven't quite performed as per the expectations that the company wanted them to. The result is paltry sales as compared to the competition which has invariably resulted in VW altering their strategy for the Indian market. Additionally, the Skoda group that comes under the VW AG has faced similar music. The after sales services are among the worst in the country and the insanely pricey spares have further aggregated the problem. (VW pulled the plug for the Fabia due to its poor performance!) Link: ,Skoda and Volkswagen admit to poor after sales in India, working to improve it Link: ,Skoda Auto revamps India management to script turnaround in sales - The Economic Times Conclusion:, From the above description, its quite clear that VW loses out of the game straight away even though the Polo and Vento are really capable cars. The price, spares and service along with the overall maintenance are northwards as compared to the other cars that you've mentioned. If strong engineering and good drivability are your top priorities (over everything else!) then this is the option to go for. Rest assured, don't bother it as an option. Go for the Maruti Suzuki Swift/Ritz if,: Bland and subtle looks is of the least concern for you. (The 'K' type boot lid design of the Ritz hatch is non appealing for many!) High reliability. The best possible after sales service in any nook and cranny of India. (for additional info, check back to one of my other answers about why Maruti Suzuki has the greatest share in the Indian market) Cheapest spares and low overall maintenance. Link: http://auto.ndtv.com/news/maruti-suzuki-tops-customer-satisfaction-with-dealer-service-jd-power-asia-pacific-686514 Go for the Grand i10/ Elite i20 if,: You want the most bang for the buck. (it'll pamper you with endless equipment and feature list for a relatively low price) The after sales service and overall maintenance is second to just the Maruti Suzuki cars, but in the broader picture, this should't be much of a concern. (I have personally been a Hyundai Santro owner over the past decade and have seriously faced no issues whatsoever) The benefits for upgrading the cars of the Hyundai camp are enormous. (We sold our 10 year old Santro to Hyundai for 1 lakh INR, which we were expecting it to sell around 50K!) Radical styling doesn't turn you off. Additional tip:, For daily city commute, i would definitely recommend the petrol variants since they are better in the long run. The price difference has arrowed down to just a minuscule! and petrol powered cars are making a comeback! (Diesel motors are costly plus they wear out significantly and are best suitable for higher daily commutes). But as far as the mentioned issues of cheap after sales and maintenance are concerned, you won't in any possible way go wrong with the cars from Maruti Suzuki or Hyundai. Remember, the overall company portfolio gives a far better picture of the car than the car itself. This is the reason, there's not much of a difference in after sales and maintenance value between cars from the same camp. So expect similar figure and statistics in terms of after sales and maintenance for the Swift and Ritz or the Grand i10 and the Elite i20. In simple terms, select the cars according to your priority: budget, space, styling, mileage etc. since the other main issues are hopefully sorted out in this answer! Hope this helps!
It ,was cheap,, but not now. Was a Maruti owner for almost 14 years. So I can comment a bit. I think after 2003, the service/maintenance costs were regularly increased by Maruti so that their service dealerships can make money. On Maruti Suzuki’s part, it was inevitable because there were a lot of service centers through out India and these businesses needed to make profit to sustain in business. So, to keep them running in a profitable shape, increasing maintenance periodically was the only way to go. And, they did it. After I sold my 2007 Alto in 2013, and doing the ,Cost vs Maintenance, math, I realised that I had ended up paying more towards the maintenance. I had spent nearly 35–40K for the maintenance (excluding the new set of Michellin XM2 tyres) through out the 5 year ownership of my Alto. (That is 3.2 lacs vs 40k). My old Maruti 800 used to be very easy on my wallet. Throughout the 7 years (1999 to 2006) of owning my old Maruti 800, the total service cost was less than 20K. No Maruti Suzuki Car’s aren’t cheap to maintain anymore.
