volkswagen beetle bumblebee Q&A Review

What changed Volkswagen's decision on using a Beetle for Bumblebee in a Transformers movie? The previous movies had to change the car model because VW didn't want to be associated with "war toys".

The reasons for Bumblebee being a Camaro in the Michael Bay films had nothing to do with “war toys”, as far as I can work out. I’ve been unable to find any record of that. I did, however, find a different (and much more plausible) explanation. Bumblebee was changed from a Beetle to a Camaro because Michael Bay didn’t like the Beetle, saying it reminded him too much of Herbie. There’s even a nod to this in the 2007 movie, when Bumblebee deliberately dents the door of the yellow Beetle next to him in the used car lot. He was changed back to a Beetle in the new film because A. it fits into the established canon of the Transformers universe and B. as an homage to the original toys and cartoons. Volkswagen didn’t seem to care either way. ***SPOILERS*** At the end of the new Bumblebee movie, he does transform into a shiny new version of the Camaro seen in the 2007 film. Since the new film is set in 1987, this connects them together and suggests that they take place in the same timeline.

Transformers (2007 movie): How did Bumblebee get his name?

I can't answer the question of why the fictional character chose that name in the 2007 movie, but in the real world, the name Bumblebee originated from the character original Transformers cartoon from the 1980's (commonly referred to as Generation 1, or G1 for short). The writers of G1 created the yellow Volkswagen Beetle as a small, young character - possibly as a way to bridge the gulf between giant transforming robots and the human characters. So it's highly likely that the name Bumblebee arose from these reasons: the need for a "softer" character, the yellow colour scheme, and the "Beetle" name. That role has persisted through the various incarnations of Transformers which followed, although they haven't always been called Bumblebee (e.g. Cheetor in "Transformers: Beast Wars" and "Hot Shot" in Transformers: Energon). But because Michael Bay was attempting to create something in line with the G1 universe, that is why they went with Bumblebee.

What kind of car is Bumblebee going to be in his upcoming movie?

1967 Volkswagen Beetle. And he is adorable.

Why do transformers and cybertron look so different in 2018 Bumblebee movie?

Different design crew for a different look in the new Bumblebee movie, obviously. I have also read that the director was extremely inspired by the original 1984 Transformers cartoon. Wikipedia tells me that the original Bumblebee was a 1978 Volkswagen Beetle, so this is what this movie's Bumblebee transforms into.

Did Michael Bay do justice to the Transformers series?

To be perfectly honest NO. Thanks to Michael Bay one of the most awesome and entertaining cartoons from the 80’s got horribly butchered several times with those crappy live action Transformers movies of his. I mean 90 percent of the time you only saw the humans and only 10 percent of the time you saw the robots. Heck the first two Transformers movies should’ve just been called A Boy And His Robot considering they mainly just focused on Sam Witwicky and Bumblebee. And then when they weren’t all focused on Sam Witwicky they were mostly focused on Megan Fox who’s by far one of the worst actresses in Hollywood today. But it’s obvious she was just there to be eye candy the whole time with WAY too many up close shots of her and her body parts. Like seriously what is this Baywatch? Aside from that pretty much the whole human cast flat out sucked. The acting performances were terrible. Way too many sick sexual jokes and racist jokes were thrown in. Way too much sexual scenes and offensive stuff thrown in. Too much trash talk. Too many violent endless explosions that didn’t make any sense. Most of the robots themselves looked like recycled crap with their twisted metal designs and having to look too human. A fowl mouth robot that transformed into a remote control truck that tried to hump Megan Fox. Two twin robots that acted too much like a pair of homeboys that most people found to be very offensive and racist. Devastator looking like a giant weird lizard like thing with TESTICLES. (SERIOUSLY MICHAEL BAY?) Way too many long drawn out scenes with the humans acting like total idiots. Sam Witwicky’s parents were annoying beyond Heck. Most of the Autobots acted like jerks and were pretty much cannon fodder. And the fact that all those movies got really bad reviews by the critics and got hated by most fans just proves that Michael Bay should’ve just stayed away from the franchise altogether. Hopefully though Travis Knight will do some major justice to the Transformers series with that upcoming Bumblebee movie. So far though after seeing the trailers I’m actually having some confidence that the movie will be really awesome but at the same time I’m having some major doubts. But at least in this movie the Transformers actually look FAR more like their G1 counterparts and look FAR better than the ones from the previous movies. And hopefully this movie will actually focus FAR more on the robots and FAR less on the humans. Have to admit though between seeing Bumblebee as a Volkswagen Beetle and Soundwave actually looking like Soundwave I’m pretty excited for it. Yes now THAT is exactly how the Transformers should’ve been done. Unfortunately Michael Bay just doesn’t really know the Transformers nor does he know how to direct good movies anymore. So here’s hoping Travis Knight will succeed where Michael Bay failed. It’d be nice to have some live action Transformers movies that are actually awesome and entertaining and are actually about the TRANSFORMERS. P.S. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen was by far one of the WORST movies I ever sat through in the theater. I’d much rather watch the whole G1 cartoon series or the whole Transformers Prime series than watch anything directed by Michael Bay again.

Why does Avatar: The Last Airbender use the 4 Greek elements instead of the 5 Japanese ones?

First, The last Airbender is clearly based on chinese martial arts and culture, not Japanese. As of why 4 Elements and not 5, it doesnt really matter, since its a fictional world, and while its based on real-life Things, it doesnt try to be realistic in any way. The places are fictional, the creatures too, most forms of transportation, and the list goes on and on. It would be like criticizing Transformers, because they have names that are not native to the country of origin of their cars. Why isnt bumblebee called Hanz? After all he was originally a Volkswagen Beetle.

What movies have been filmed at Griffith Observatory?

A lot of movies used the Griffith Observatory as a filming location. The first one that comes to mind is James Dean’s ,Rebel Without a Cause,, the movie made the location internationally famous, and ever since that movie, most films and TV that set place in Los Angeles features at least one shot of the Griffith Observatory., The ,Terminator, franchise had used the Griffith Observatory many times. In James Cameron’s 1984 original ,Terminator,, T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives butt-naked from time travel, scaring a garbage truck driver, he encounters 3 punks and took their cloth. In ,Terminator: Salvation,, Kyle Reese and Star were living in the ruin of the Griffith Observatory. The same location is used again in ,Terminator Genisys,, where an old T-800 (Pops) showed up and battled the original terminator outside the Griffith Observatory., In Robert Zemeckis’s ,Back to the Future ,(Part II, I think), where Marty McFly was resetting the timeline screwed up by Bill Tannen, the chase scene was filmed at the Observatory Tunnel located in Griffith Park. Marty on his hoverboard was wrestling with Bill Tannen on the ,Grays Sports Almanac,. This tunnel was also used in another of Zemeckis’s film, the same tunnel is the Entrance to Toontown in ,Who Framed Roger Rabbit,. This same tunnel later was used as a homage in ,Bumblebee,, in a chase scene where a police car was chasing Bumblebee (Volkswagen Beetle version). In ,Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,, one of the most critical moment was filmed at the roof of Griffith Observatory, where Madison Lee (portrayed by Demi Moore) shoot and kills Ray Carter (portrayed by Robert Patrick, the guy who played T-1000) and revealed herself as the main antagonist. Michael Bay’s ,Transformer ,(2007) has two scenes of the Observatory. The initial landing of the Autobots was seen from the Griffith Observatory, Sam Witwicky, Mikaela Banes and Bumblebee parked in front of the Griffith Observatory at night, and they watched four meteorites coming down from space. Later when Bumblebee is captured and the Autobots are scanning the location of the Allspark from the Sam’s grandfather’s glasses, Optimus, Ironhide, Jazz and Ratchet were in their robotic form, hiding in plain sight. In Emma Stone and Damien Chazzelle’s Oscar-winning musical comedy drama ,La La Land,, the two protagonists Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) watched a screening of ,Rebels Without the Cause,, after watching the film on James Dean driving up to the observatory, Mia and Sebastian visit the actual observatory, exploring the interior and ends up dancing a waltz aptly called ,Planetarium, in the planetarium theatre.

Are you tired of seeing straight couples on TV series and films?

It does get on my nerves a bit when every story needs to have a romantic interest shoehorned into it. As an example, I’ll use the recent film Bumblebee (2018). WARNING: HUGE BUMBLEBEE SPOILERS AHEAD! I’m basically about to reveal the entire plot, including the ending. If you plan to see it and haven’t yet, I advise not reading this until you have. The wonderful Hailee Steinfeld plays our hero, 18-year-old Charlie Watson. She finds a rusty Volkswagen Beetle in a junkyard, which turns out to be a disguised alien robot named B-127 from the planet Cybertron hiding from the war raging on his planet. Charlie nicknames him Bumblebee and they become friends. The military has also found Bumblebee and is trying to capture him, while Charlie tries to keep him safe from them. Meanwhile, the evil Decepticons, B-127’s enemies in the Cybertron war, track him to Earth and ask the military for help in finding him. They do eventually catch him, and Charlie has to break into the military base, free Bumblebee and save his life. They then have to stop the Decepticons from calling an army to destroy all life on Earth (for some reason). Charlie sabotages their antenna to stop them sending the message while Bumblebee fights and eventually kills the two Decepticons. Bumblebee sacrifices his own life to buy Charlie time to stop the message being sent, but she then saves his life again, and all is well. Meanwhile, Bumblebee’s friends have arrived on Earth, and he needs to go and join them, so he and Charlie part ways. At the end, Bumblebee transforms into a Camaro, setting up the 2007 Transformers film. All sounds good, right? Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: Charlie has a romantic interest in this movie, a guy named Memo. He’s the only other person who knows about Bumblebee (except the military) until the end, and there are some funny scenes in the middle with him, Charlie and Bumblebee getting revenge on some bullies after they insult Charlie and then running from the police, but ultimately, Memo contributes absolutely nothing to the story. The only reason he’s even there is so there’s some kind of romantic subplot, because apparently every movie needs one. You could literally edit all of Memo’s scenes out and the plot would be exactly the same. This is what I get tired of. Some of Memo’s scenes are funny, but ultimately they’re just filler to pad the runtime, and the same scenes could easily have played out with another character who had more relevance to the story. All they had to do was write some kind of connection in there so that Memo contributed something critical to the plot, no matter how small, but they didn’t. The other characters are participating in the story, and he’s just kind of…there. This isn’t a new phenomenon. Movies have had tacked-on love stories for as long as there have been movies. Before that, books and stage plays had them. It’s a time-tested technique to attract a bigger audience, and that’s fine. But if there’s going to be a love story, I just wish they’d try to make it actually matter to the rest of the story. Otherwise I’m essentially just watching a movie and taking occasional breaks to watch bits of a different, somewhat boring movie. To address the other part of the question, I really don’t care if they’re straight couples or not. I certainly would like to see gay and lesbian couples get a bit more representation on screen, but I don’t think they should be treated any differently, plot-wise, from straight couples - if there’s no reason to have a romantic subplot, then there shouldn’t be one at all.
