M suspension is a sports setup for harder cornering whereas air ride type suspension is used for comfort. Well, it’s a *different* experience. A bit more like an E39 BMW. Mercedes’ Airmatic suspension is good at doing two things: (1) Adjusting stiffness ,so that the car can be either neutrally balanced and athletic, or comfortable but with more understeer. This is a relatively heavy car with a lot of power and not a lot of tire underneath it. To make it handle well, you need a *lot* of spring rate. Too much to be comfortable on city streets. Airmatic lets you choose stiffness based on what you’re doing with the car. A coilover setup can be tuned for a solid compromise, but it still won't have quite the dynamic range. (2) Muting road noise., Those airbags soak up noise, and Mercedes designed all the noise paths into the passenger compartment with the expectation that they would be in place. A steel spring transmits noise and vibration from the lower control arms up into the upper mounting point. You hear it and you feel it. When the Airmatic cars first came out, the parts were very expensive and nobody but the dealer knew how to troubleshoot the system. Neither of these things are true today. Arnott Industries makes OEM-spec Airmatic components. They cost less per corner than a good (emphasize good) coilover setup. I got 220,000 miles out of my factory Airmatic setup, and replaced it with Arnott when the left-rear tower failed. The Bimmer offers you the ease of living with your car when it comes to service and warranty packages (read BMW secure) Personal preference: The BMW 3 Series. The stiffness/softness of the suspension can be adjusted both manually and automatically -- for example, the suspension will stiffen up automatically if you start to drive a twisty road enthusiastically. For highway travel you can push a button and select 1960s Cadillac, although it isn't actually labelled that. ("COMF" on mine.) It is an extremely $ophisticated $etup just a$ long a$ it doe$n't need repairing. In days past, Mercedes used to spend much more time developing and tuning their suspensions than was economically possible with cheaper cars. So did manufacturers like BMW. Today that advantage has pretty much gone away as all suspension designers now make extensive use of computer-aided design. But even with that, final tuning based on actual road experience is still performed. The trendy place for this is the Nurburgring in Germany. BTW, the most significant invention in the world of automobile suspensions in the past 50 years is the magneto-rheological shock absorber, covered by patents held by Lord, a GM subsidiary. They vary their stiffness virtually instantaneously in response to changes in a magnetic field. No physical valves have to open or close. "Magnetic ride suspension" in GM marketing lingo. GM licences it to Ferrari and Audi, among others. Incorporated into Airmatic it would probably make Mercedes the undisputed suspension champ, but I doubt Mercedes would be willing to pay whatever it is GM demands for its use! Pity.

When you’re inside the car, there are features like the Pre-Safe system, attention assist, Active distance assist, Distronic PLUS and many others which give you that feeling of assuredness. When you’re riding with your folks it’s a good feeling to know that you’re inside a machine which is a virtual tank. C) Luxury: ,This has been a defining trait of Mercedes’ cars. Like in my S-Class, the fabulously done interiors give you a feeling that is nothing like in this world. Like the Energizing massage function on the seats. Personally, I'd cancel audi from the list. In the last couple of years, we had a few audis and we had trouble with all of them. They're not reliable and have a massive fuel consumption. I also don't like the design of the interior, but that's something you need to decide about. That leaves us with Mercedes or BMW. Here are two questions which should help you decide: What kind of driving style do you prefer?, sporting -> BMW comfortable -> Mercedes As already mentioned by Erwin Karim, you can choose between various driving modes, which allows you to switch between sport and comfort mode in well equipped cars of both manufactures. There are only small differences between Mercedes and BMW. For example, in a BMW you can hear the engine just a little louder than in a Mercedes and the view over the distinctive designed hood gives you the little extra sportive feeling in a BMW. How many people do you plan to transport regularly in the car at the same time?, Maximum of two adults and maybe one or two children -> Mercedes C-Class or BMW 3 series More than two adults -> Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 series Space is really rare in the smaller cars. My dad owns a C-Class and it is really no fun to drive with three or four adults in it, especially for a long distance. Some thoughts about the different cars, I picked them based on your needs mentioned in the question and your budget. Mercedes C-Class W204 (2011-2015), It's the facelift version, so all the bugs are removed and you get a relatively new car for a good price. They also started to offer various different driving assistance systems: PRE-SAFE DISTRONIC PLUS (keeps a certain distance to the car driving in front of you) PRE-SAFE Brake (if the system senses that a collision is imminent, the breaks apply automatically) ATTENTION ASSIST (warns you, when you start to fatigue) Active Blind Spot Assist Active Lane Keeping Assist Parktronic with Active Parking Assist A camera mounted behind the rear view mirror recognises road signs and displays them in the navigationsystem and the instrument cluster. For your money, you also get the COMMAND Online navigationsystem with internet connection and the possibility to pair your phone via Bluetooth or cable. Mercedes E-Class W212 (2009-2013), The design of this car is pretty edgy and beamy, not everybody likes that. Since it was produced a few years earlier than the W204, it doesn't offer all the driving assistance systems that the C-Class has. PRE-SAFE Brake is not available no Active Parking Assist, the car just gives you advice for the angle of steering The Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist is available, but they're not active. The car only gives a visual and acoustic warning. Nethertheless there are a few other systems available for this car such as the night vision assist and the absolutely fabulous Airmatic. This air suspension guarantees a smooth ride on the worst roads, a must-have if you decide to buy the E-Class. If the internet connection is very important to you, I recommend that you get a car manufactured after July 2011. In that month, Mercedes replaced the old navigationsystem and started to build in the new COMMAND online. BMW 3 series E90 LCI (2008-2011), Although this car is a facelift version as well, it's the oldest one of the four cars. You really notice that when it comes to the list of assistance systems. There's only one system, the Adaptive Cruise Control (same as DISTRONIC PLUS from MB). From September 2008 onward BMW put the new iDrive Professional Navigation (CIC) in the E90. It supports internet access, has a 80GB hard drive disk, a higher resolution and is generally more responsive than the predecessor. Of course you can connect your phone and they also offer something called Concierge Service. You can call them and ask for the nearest gas station, restaurant, etc. and they'll send you the adress right into the system. You sadly have to pay for that service now, since the car is a bit older. In Germany it costs $276 per year. BMW 5 series F10 (2010-2013), The F10 offers a lot of assistance systems similar to the ones of the W204, just with a different name: Active Blind Spot Detection Lane Departure Warning High-beam Assistant Active Parking Assistant Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function Collision Warning with Brake Application In addition the BMW offers: Surround view (side and top) Night Vision with pedestrian detection Keyless Go And most important: a Head-Up Display, where all essential information (e.g. Speed, distance to the destination, etc.) are presented. On top of all that you have the option to get the iDrive Professional Navigationsystem. It's the car that offers the best features, it's relatively new and has the best interior/exterior design. That's a surprising conclusion, I've been a big Mercedes fan for years, but it's simply the better car. Since I’ve hit 11 years with my BMW E90 320d, I’m thinking of upgrading. Firstly, my use cases might be different form you. I’m looking for a vehicle that last 15–20 years, I have 3 children from 3–10 years old and I like long drives to a holiday destination. And it has to be super comfortable and powerful. So I’ve narrow how to these cars:- Porsche Cayenne 958 Turbo. You can get a used one at 20 - 25% of MSRP in used market for cars that ages around 7–8 years. This is the top of the line Porsche Cayenne and costs almost $100k when new. This SUV can do everything, on road, off road. The engine is bullet proof and can easily last 1 million miles as attested by the previous version the Porsche Cayenne 957. This thing has 500 hp, and a functional interior. There are Porsche 957 still running around today, so the 958 will still run in 2030 or 2040. The turbo still be more comfortable, powerful and better handling and most cars new on the road. The problem is these cars are quite rare since most owners just keep them around for long term use. Mercedes S-class W222 The ultimate sedan. The S-class. The automobile. Many will run away when see an old S-class. But my experience will tell you this, you need to do proper maintenance on old German cars. Most buyers will complain about things being broken and being expensive on old German cars, but with proper maintenance, this S-class can easily last 20–25 years. It has the most comfortable and luxury interior. The AirMatic suspension is one of the best in the business. Replacement used to be expensive, but you can get 3rd party OEM parts for 1/3 to 1/2 of Mercedes prices. ABC is the best suspension that I’ve ever ride, but hydraulics leaks is the one you want to watch out for. And the interior is the best interior to sit on. This interior will still look good 15–20 years from now. The most amazing things about the S-class is the amout of variant that you can have. From the “economical” hybrid V6 to the gut-punch 6.0 liter V12 twin turbo which screams “presence”, this S-class offers everything. Plus, in the used market, you can look rich with very little money. Maintenance is the key to keeping this long live. Toyota Land Cruiser / Lexus LX No vehicle can be described as more reliable than the Toyota Land Cruiser. It is the very definition of reliability. If you looking for something more luxurious, the sister variant Lexus LX is the one to get for. The car of choice of people living in desolate environment, this car will outlast your grandchildren. If the question that I can have only one car in my entire life, this is the one that I’ll get. My only complain that the large V8 has not been updated. A turbo and tuneup would do wonders for the platform, but Toyota has decided to make the engineering to be as simple as possible. Simplicity means reliability. So hope this helps in your long term car search.
