First of all, this isn’t some red herring that UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) is throwing at us. The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid will be the first model launched in Malaysia in 2022 with UMWT uploading a teaser post on the Toyota Malaysia Facebook page.
For those who want to keep track of the date, it’s 14-January 2022 which is next Friday at 9 pm. The launch will be streamed across Toyota Malaysia’s social media channels.

Just a quick recap, UMWT opened the order books for the locally-assembled (CKD) hybrid crossover back in October with estimated prices starting from RM 137,000. The prices are on-the-road without insurance and include a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
With that, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is the top-of-the-range variant and is powered by a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder petrol engine (98 PS/142 Nm). That petrol mill is paired to an electric motor (72 PS/163 Nm), giving a total combined output of 122 PS.

While the petrol-powered 1.8 G and 1.8 V variants (139 PS/172 Nm) are paired to a CVT automatic gearbox, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is mated to an e-CVT automatic.
Despite being given an additional 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hydride battery to add some juice to the electric motor, boot space is uncompromised on the hybrid crossover. That’s thanks to it being placed under the rear seats and the battery comes with a standard 8-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
If that isn’t enough, UMWT is offering a 2-year extension on the warranty for an additional RM 2,950.

Besides the hybrid powertrains and an additional battery, there is one more feature that is exclusive to the Corolla Cross Hybrid and that is in its instrument cluster. Instead of the 4.2-inch unit seen on the petrol variants, the hybrid gets a larger 7-inch digital display.

Other than that, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is mostly similar to the petrol variant in terms of equipment which includes:
3D panoramic view monitor (PVM)
Blind-spot monitor (BSM) with rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA)
On top of the 4 colour choices shared with the petrol variants, namely Silver Metallic, Red Mica Metallic, Nebula Blue Metallic, and Platinum White Pearl, the Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with a fifth colour option – Celestite Grey Metallic.

With the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid finally making its Malaysian debut next week, this might mark a new electrified journey for UMWT with the electric bZ4X also expected to arrive later in 2022.
