Proton to start assembly in Pakistan by Q3 2021 – X70, Saga first models

Proton has been ramping up its presence in Pakistan with the launching of the Saga a little more than a week ago. Even though it has only two models in its line-up with the Proton X70 completing the pair, Proton’s partner in the South Asian nation, Al-Haj Automotive aims to commence local assembly at its new plant by the third quarter of 2021. The plant, which is built on a greenfield site in Karachi, will have a planned capacity of 25,000 units a year. About USD 30 million have been invested in

Bookings for the new Proton Saga, which was launched on 6-August, has surpassed the 10,000 bookings milestone. Evolution of the Proton Saga in 35 years - The pride of Malaysia or wasted potential?

Proton was one of the few carmakers to emerge from the 80s (coincidentally, Geely was also part of that small batch). The first car to bear the Proton name was the Proton Saga. Based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore, the Saga was a big deal for Malaysia when it first came to fruition in 1985. Thirty five years later, the Saga remains highly relevant. The compact saloon is affordable and perfect for young families. It is a worthy successor to the “Saga” name. Having evolved over 35 years, the Saga

New Proton Saga – Could This Be A Better Car Than The Perodua Bezza?

The Proton Saga is Proton’s bread and butter model, a model that has been (and still is) the default first car option for many car buyers. That quickly changed when Perodua introduced its first-ever sedan, the Bezza, back in 2016. Car buyers now have a new alternative to the evergreen Saga. The third generation Saga was introduced just two months after Perodua unveiled the Bezza, giving its core model a much-needed upgrade. Earlier this week, Proton launched the new Saga, which is basically a mi

The Saga continues: Proton Saga, 1.8 million units later

As July 9 looms upon us, we take this opportunity to celebrate an iconic nameplate in Malaysian automotive history. For it was on July 9 1985 that the Proton Saga started rolling off the production lines. An impressive feat, seeing that Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (Proton) had just been established 2 years prior. And now, here we are, the Saga nameplate still with us, still going strong, still staying true to its humble origins and purpose and ever popular with Malaysian consumers. In fact, the

No replacement planned yet for ageing Proton Saga, BMA platform too costly

The current generation Proton Saga, sometimes referred to as the P2-13A Saga, has been on the market since 2016. To keep it ahead of its biggest competitor the Perodua Bezza, Proton gave the A-segment Proton Saga sedan a mid-lifecycle facelift in 2019, adding a new touch screen infotainment, and a new Hyundai-sourced 4-speed automatic replacing the previous car’s lousy CVT, and more importantly, drop its price to be lower than the Bezza. Since the current Saga is basically a heavily modified ver

Proton Saga vs Perodua Myvi: Which one retains its value better?

Ah, the age-old debate amongst Proton Saga and Perodua Myvi owners: which one of these two popular models in Malaysia have stronger resale value? Thanks to Carsome, they've released data for some of Malaysia’s popular cars, which includes the aforementioned Perodua Myvi and Proton Saga. Keep in mind that Carsome's data is most accurate as they calculate based on the actual transaction prices of the cars. Prices you see on Mudah and Carlist are not the prices you get when you sell your car to a d

How the Proton Saga went from RM 17,575 in year 1985 to RM 32,800 today

When the Proton Saga was first launched in 1985, a fresh graduate who earns a monthly salary of RM 1,000 can expect a reasonably comfortable life, even in the city. A bowl of noodle was just a little over a Ringgit, and a McDonalds burger would have cost just RM 3. A Nissan Sunny 130Y, the default car for middle-class families, retails for RM 19,500. Depending on how far along was one in his/her career, that’s about 1.5 years’ worth a young person’s salary. When the first Proton Saga was introdu

2021 Proton Saga seen in Egypt, launching soon?

A couple of days ago, we reported that Proton is in the midst of growing their export business, expanding the business to various new markets. Though not an entirely new market, it appears that Proton is quietly gearing up to introduce the Proton Saga in Egypt, as seen on several social media postings. Seen here is the current-generation Proton Saga facelift that was introduced in Malaysia in August 2019. At a glance, it appears that the Egypt-bound units are visually identical to the Malaysian-

Five decent alternatives to the Proton Saga/Perodua Bezza that we wish we could have

Globally, the A-segment sedan is not a very popular category of cars. Squeezing a three-box format design into the tiny dimensions of an entry-level sedan don’t make for very visually appealing proportions. At such size, it’s debatable if a sedan is any more practical than a hatchback with folding rear seats, but still, consumers in many developing markets (Malaysia included) have a preference for budget sedans so manufacturers happy to comply. As such, it’s inevitable that all A-segment sedans

Proton Saga spotted in Pakistan, new 1,299 cc engine, CKD in 2021

Two units of the new Proton Saga with camouflage were spotted in Lahore, Pakistan. These units, which appear to be undergoing tests, are likely equipped with a slightly downsized engine (1,299 cc vs 1,332 cc). Proton Saga As reported by CarSpiritPK, the Saga bound for Pakistan will get a downsized engine to gain tax incentives as the tax structure for 1,300 cc and above cars is different. Power outputs of the smaller engine are still unclear at the moment. The 1,332 cc engine we have in Malaysia
