All-new 2021 Toyota Harrier, TNGA-K, 2.0L and 2.5L Hybrid, goodbye turbo

Slightly less than a week after the all-new 2021 Toyota Harrier was leaked online, Toyota has released preliminary specifications of its SUV.

Goodbye turbo power

From the provided specifications, Toyota has dropped the outgoing model's 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, replacing it with two Dynamic Force powertrains.

The first is a 2.0-litre M20A-FKS naturally-aspirated petrol engine that does 171 PS at 6,600 rpm and 207 Nm at 4,800 rpm, hooked up to a Direct Shift CVT.

Apart from the naturally-aspirated unit, Toyota is also offering the all-new Harrier with a 2.5-litre A25A-FXS hybrid petrol engine that does 178 PS at 5,700 rpm and 221 Nm between 3,600 rpm to 5,200 rpm.

The hybrid version of the all-new 2021 Harrier can be had as a front-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive model. Common between both hybrid variants is a front motor that does 120 PS and 202 Nm, while the all-wheel drive variant adds a rear motor that adds 54 PS and 121 Nm.

As such, the combined system output for front-wheel drive variants of the all-new 2021 Harrier is 218 PS, while all-wheel drive variants do 222 PS.

While power figures may trail the outgoing model (231 PS/350 Nm), fuel efficiency figures should be better than before.

Evolutionary, sleek design

Design wise, Toyota has taken an evolutionary approach with the all-new Harrier, as the all-new model is visually similar to the outgoing model, but with new design elements, including a sleek new tail light.

That said, the all-new 2021 Harrier loses its signature Harrier emblem up front, replaced by the Toyota emblem, as it will be sold globally (North America to get it as the Toyota Venza).

Underneath the sleek new body is Toyota’s tried-and-tested TNGA platform, specifically the GA-K variant.

Even gets a built-in DVR

Inside, the all-new 2021 Toyota Harrier gain a large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a Digital Inner Mirror, which is a built-in digital video recorder (DVR) that records both the front and rear of the vehicle.

Longer and wider than before

In terms of dimensions, the all-new 2021 Harrier is 4,740 mm long (+15 mm), 1,855 mm wide (+20 mm), and 1,660 mm tall (-30 mm). Wheelbase is 30 mm longer than the model it replaces, coming in at 2,690 mm. All variants of the Japanese market Harrier will get 19-inch wheels as standard.

Like the outgoing Harrier, the all-new model also gets the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) ADAS suite.

Launching in Japan soon

Toyota will be launching the all-new 2021 Harrier in Japan “around June 2020”, though the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic could push things back a bit.

What about Malaysia?

Considering that Toyota will be introducing the model in Japan later this year, it would take some time before the model is introduced here.

With that said, we can expect the all-new Harrier to launch here in 2021. 

In the mean time, Toyota will be introducing a slew of SUVs here, including the highly-anticipated RAV4, over the next couple of months.
