All-new 2022 Toyota Avanza to be safer than BR-V and Xpander, 6 airbags and AEB confirmed

As the launch of all-new 2022 Toyota Avanza draws closer, more details surrounding the new MPV have begun surfacing and it is shaping up to be an impressive model. An estimated launch for the all-new Toyota Avanza is likely going to take place sometime in 2022

Earlier, we established that the all-new Toyota Avanza will be a twin model to the next-generation Perodua Alza, mirroring a similar arrangement like the Perodua Aruz and Toyota Rush. Both the all-new Avanza and next-gen Alza will be developed on the DNGA platform.

This move will see the current Avanza's rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout dropped in favour of a more fuel-efficient front-wheel drive (FWD) layout. A naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine mated to a CVT-type automatic will be the new powertrain of choice.

Now, more details have been made known, as sources familiar with the matter in Indonesia told us that the all-new Toyota Avanza will be fitted with six airbags and autonomous emergency braking (AEB). The fitment of these two safety features will put the all-new Avanza well ahead of rivals like the Mitsubishi Xpander and Honda BR-V.

Ativa's ASA cameras

Considering that the all-new Avanza and and next-gen Alza will be twins, that would also mean that the next-gen Alza's safety equipment will likely mirror the Perodua Ativa, owing to their similar price positioning. Thus, there is a strong possibility for the next-generation Malaysian-market Alza and its twin, the all-new Avanza to get Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

The rationale behind merging the Toyota Avanza and Perodua Alza into one model is because Daihatsu and Toyota is striving to streamline their product portfolio in this region. The Alza’s donor car, the Daihatsu Boon Luminas and Toyota Passo Sette, have been discontinued for more than 10 years, which explains why Perodua has yet to introduce an updated model.
