Mercedes-AMG has announced its first-ever plug-in hybrid, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GT 63S E Performance now becomes the most powerful series-production model ever from AMG.

The new GT 63S E will top the variant list offered for the Mercedes-AMG GT four-door lineup which already includes the GT 43 and 43 4Matic+, 53 4Matic+, and 63 4Matic and 63S 4Matic+.

Under the hood, the 63S E retains the 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo engine but now combines a 204 PS / 320 Nm electric motor and 6.1 kWh battery (that’s been developed in-house by AMG) on the rear axle, for a total power output of 843 PS and 1,400 Nm of torque.

Deriving tech from their Formula 1 program, the battery is specifically designed for fast power delivery and draw to aid the internal combustion engine. Mercedes claims an electric driving range of 12 km (WLTP cycle); a unique “Electric” drive mode enables complete electric propulsion up to speeds of 130 km/h.

Charging is via the 3.7 kW onboard AC charger, at a charging station, wallbox or household socket.

The motor itself acts directly on the rear axle automated two-speed transmission. An electric actuator engages the second gear at around 140 km/h, which corresponds to the electric motor's maximum speed of around 13,500 rpm.

Torque is transferred to the two rear wheels through an electronic limited-slip rear differential housed within a compact electric drive unit (EDU) – AMG refers to this as the P3 Hybrid setup.

Performance stats read 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds (0.3 seconds faster than the 63S 4Matic+), 0-200 km/h in less than ten seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h.

As the new flagship of the model series is particularly well equipped. It receives the AMG Ride Control+ suspension with a new damping system, AMG ceramic composite brake system and latest generation MBUX multimedia system with special hybrid displays.

The GT 63S E Performance is scheduled to make its public debut at the upcoming Munich International Motor Show before going on sale in Europe and the US later this year.
